  • The steel player looks a little thin to be Sol - but a nice sequence anyway - from 1929. For more information and other Hawaiian music related fun, visit www.beerrecords.com.

It's not Sol but it's equally amazing--that's "Sam Ku West," or Sam Ku Jr. (his birthname). He died at 23 in Paris, France--making this small video, though it does not highlight the depth of his talent in the slightest, incredibly important. Look at the picture of Sam Ku West on Wikipedia--it is undoubtedly him. A first-generation Hawaiian steel guitarist and contemporary of Sol and Bennie Nawahi. Amazing!

Looks and sounds a lot like Bob Kaia (Kai?)..

I wish there was more. Hapa Haole music seems to be poorly documented on film despite it's popularity.

This is a (very) short excerpt of the song "On The Beach At Waikîkî"; I got a recording somewhere by Kalama's Quartet.

Was this from a movie or Soundie and what was the title? Thank you.
