This movie is dramatic, well-directed, -produced, and -acted. I highly recommend it for anyone watching it for entertainment.
On the other hand, the theme supports the Great Purges. One needn't go into detail, I don't think.

This movie doesn't support the great purges, and it contextually doesn't make sense that it would. The movie is set during the Russian Civil War and features a member of the red army as the main hero. The purges started almost 15 years after this is meant to take place. Not only that but this would have been made during Kruschev 'Destalinisation' which involved condemning Stalin's purges. The most you can say contextually is that it supported the red terror, yet it still seems to look down on that as it looks down on the overly suspicious secret police as the actor is unfairly misjudged by them at the very beginning of the film as he simply forgot his identification at home. The idea of a traitor among the group doesn't necessarily mean it supports purges, just as the same in the West doesn't mean the movie supports Mcarthyism.

The Whites are not the real villains, but the Specialists. Who recruited, employed, trusted the specialists, the old servitors of the Monarchy?
Trotsky.
The worst traitor is the one who seemed to have served the cause by killing a known enemy. Exactly what was alleged of Bukharin, Rykov, and the rest of the Old Bolsheviks.
Almost the entire movie is spent riding over the steppes, facing a hidden enemy which might spring out in ambush at any time, but the real danger is the trusted comrade within our company.
Yes, I will be willing to equate McCarthyism with Stalinism, as purges undertaken in similar spirit, albeit with unequal degrees of savagery.

А как-же, "Белое солнце пустыни" ? этот фильм тоже нравится иностранцам, вроде-бы... И ещё -- "Зеленый фургон" с Дм. Хараиьяном, Б.Брондуковым и другими замечательными Актерами... и ещё - "Кандагар", "Кин-дза-дза", "Незнайка на Луне"... а многие другие я сам не смотрел, честно-говоря или не помню уже...
