    There are countless myths that surround the AK rifle. Often times, people perpetuate these untruths by simply repeating ad nauseum the same tired, ancient debunked pieces of misinformation. the point about the ak's ergonomics is quite interesting imo.
    many complain that the stock is too short, the grip is not thick enough and operating it is akward because of the controls like safety lever and the low stock.
    the answer for this is all is actually pretty simple: imagine being a russian soldier in sibiria in the winter.
    thick gloves, thick clothes. the ak's ergonomics acommodate to these circumstances; with thick clothes you have a proper lenght of pull. the grip is thin enough to hold onto properly with heavy gloves. the safety is easy to operate even with you being barely able to move your fingers due to the cold temperatures. same goes for mag release.

    • @drzero8222
      @drzero8222 6 лет назад +20

      Exactly. Though they wouldn't be covered in snow all the time, I believe it is standard for soldiers to use thick gloves.

      watch this video. the problem with the site is most dumbs ass dont know how they work. they are just as accurate as an ar's ruclips.net/video/qBNrgltB7e8/видео.html. you are entitled to you opinion on this matter some people just wont agree because its not american. truth be told troops on the ground ar vs ak we get our ass kicked every time if not for air help.

    • @Max_Da_G

      Cheaply made rifle? More expensive US-made rifles compared to Russian manufactured are ALREADY of inferior quality.
      When dirt gets into magwell on AR it can make a total pain to remove. Even worse with freezing conditions. AK mags don't care. Rock-in mag is THE reliable way. Also allows for any curvature of mags.
      So Russians using their AKs in arctic warfare conditions without turning it into Valmet. It has a nice and large trigger guard just to accommodate big gloves. WHat will you say now?
      Better sights? Better for what? Peep sights that sit close to the eye are good for ranged combat but are worse for short-medium range where target acquisition speed is paramount. In that regard the open sights of the AK that are moved further away from the eye are a better idea in fast-pace of combat.

      @@ShamblesDoctor have you ever had to bet your life on an AR/M-16 variant? Doubtful. I have and when on patrol with the Kurdish soldiers I would carry an AK. I am VERY familiar with both and in dirt, wet, snow (yes it snows in northern Iraq) and all around shitty conditions the reliability factor is massively superior with minimal maintenance. I totally agree with Reid.

      I guess it's came from shooter games. There's always AK's with bad accuracy and flawless AR-15/M4/M16 with accuracy of Barret(including fully auto).
      Also, as ccceecc already mentioned, it's because of movies. And I can also remind you of how black people from Somali shoots. :) If you've seen these videos.
      I'm from East Europe. Around decade ago a lot of people was talking about bad sides of AR system and how it constantly jams. But they haven't ever told any word about bad sides of AK system.
      There will be always silly people that talks shit about things that they don't actually know.

      Funny thing is, the 1911 is one of the more accurate pistols on the market. Having fired both the 1911 and M9, I'd pick the 1911 every time, as I personally think the M9 is unwieldy garbage. I've also shot a compact CZ-75, which I LOVED. Compact CZ-75 or 1911... I'm gonna go with the CZ-75, as that thing is crazy accurate. Keep in mind I've had no pistol training, and some people get really butt-hurt when I say I don't like the M9. It's like, "so what?" So I don't like the M9; what's it to you?

      TheCoolwhipped think it also has to do with the "communism is evil and anything that comes from it is terrible" stigma. Pretty sure it's the same situation that happened during the Border War in Africa, where the South Africans were so patriotic and anti-communist that they chose literally one of the worst rifles ever made over an AK because of their intense patriotism, but forced themselves to believe that it was good because they were so blinded.

    My Century Arms Romanian WASR 10 is 3 moa with irons at 100 yards, and with a red dot I can bring that down to 2 moa. And if I put a magnified optic like a Primary Arms 1-6, I have made multiple 1 moa groups.
    AK's are some of the best carbines in the world. They are just not as modular and easier to work on as an AR. Case in point..... You need a bench vise and an armourers wrench to change an AR barrel. You cant to that with an AK.

I state the ak47 platform but I also love the ar15 however I like the AK platform more. they look in disbelief and then I state I bet I'll hit the 300 yard gong before you with your ar15 with iron sights on they just laugh again. in the end I still sell the ar15 but the ak47 is so misunderstood.

    My first AK was a stamped Norinco Chinese model I forget what I paid for it but it wasn't a lot. I was hitting my targets with iron sights at 400 and up to 600 yards depending on conditions but I would bet that I could have gone 700 to 800 yards but I never thought to try for those long shots. I put thousands of rounds through that right rifle with no problems and I still own that rifle and shoot it often, the barrel shows little wear (it has a chrome lined barrel). Bottom line is I think they are great rifles so much so that I purchased another one and am in the market for a third AK rifle that way I have three AK rifles to go with my three AR15's as I like to keep things even. Oh yeah remember when the Wall came down you could get cases of surplus East German military ammo for dirt cheap and I still have cases of that stacked to my ceiling's guns without ammunition are nothing more than clubs. I served 29 years 11 months and 3 days in the Army (medically retired for wounds received in combat in 2014) almost all of my time was in RDF of one sort or another. a quick rundown of the list from drug interdiction taskforce in the 80's, Panama, Gulf war, Hati, Somalia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and a ton of crazy crap in between. I qualified as an SDM on an A4 and have a ton of shooting experience I spent 6 years as a weapons trainer for 1st Army (SARG) I have trained with Army SOCOM, Navy MA's and EOD, Air Force TAC and Coast Guard security teams and was a shooter on the AMU. - I also have and have built many AR platforms, so, I agree that with the logistical support of the army the AR variants are a magnificent weapon system with no doubt. But it's like comparing a Mustang GT to a Jeep. I don't drive my mustang on the off road trails but my Jeep does really good on the pavement. - I can't think of too many parts of my AR's that I could fabricate from scratch in my garage but on the other hand I can't think of to many parts on my AK that I can't. If I had to pick one without any spare parts or support it would clearly be the AK. - when on patrol with the Kurdish soldiers I would carry an AK. I am VERY familiar with both and in dirt, wet, snow (yes it snows in northern Iraq) and all around shitty conditions the reliability factor is massively superior with minimal maintenance. I totally agree with Reid.

    First I want to start by saying I am a civilian and never been in a combat situation but from working both guns I think the accuracy myth and the spray and pray has to do with the iron sites. The rear notch is pretty small and trying to shoot fast make it not as quick as a peep. Pop a red dot on it then it is very comparable. I would say the AR is at the top of ergo dynamics though. Everything can be more easily worked that a Garande too. Now you can reload and charge it fast especially if you use one mag to eject the other and reach under to charge but take practice to do reliable. One upside to the lever action on seating a new mag is it can be done with a little grim still in it. An AR i harder if there is anything to foul it. Also it is easier to not actually fully seat an AR mag and have it embarrassingly fall out.

    It's not so much a matter of cost:quality. The costs get inflated by restrictions on importation and the lack of cheaper, foreign competition. Remove the import bans of AKs and you'll find them much cheaper, and honestly Chinese SKSs aren't bad, and nor are their AKs.

    Only trouble I've had is that some of the magazines I've had don't want to go in properly. I've had to take the rifle and magazines to the gun smith to let him do the fitting and adjustments to make them be sturdy in the rifle and feed properly. I like my AK better than my AR, but with my bad health I'd probably reach for my AR as it's a lighter rifle, lighter ammo. Thanks Reid. You really do us a good job on these videos. Nathan Dempsey AKOU actually "test" the rifles, 5000 rounds of semi abusive real life stuff like dropping the rifle, getting the barrel hot then rechecking to see if it holds zero etc. Most of the other reviews are a few hundred rounds standing or sitting in the same spot. AKOU defiantly finds the level of quality control a company has or doesn't have.

    • @johnandrewserranogarcia7223
      @johnandrewserranogarcia7223 7 лет назад +22

      Having 40,000 rounds over a long period of time is normal while firing 2,500 rounds in one sitting and 2,500 rounds in the second sitting is making that rifle do something it was not designed to do, they are called torture tests because the rifles are being put through unreasonable standards.

    • @ReidHenrichs
      @ReidHenrichs  7 лет назад +67

      Nathan, I have experience of training thousands of students, damn near tens of thousands. I have seen million of rounds of ammo go downrange. Our students shoot 1200 rounds in two days, and 2400 rounds in 4 days. This happens consistently, and the guns rarely, and I mean rarely, have issues. I have personally put over 1000 rounds through some of my guns in just a few hours. It still held zero, with both the aimpoint and iron sights. Dead on. That is over 33 magazines of ammo. Thirty-three. Think about that. That is far beyond any combat conditions I have heard of or seen. During one class demo, we even put brass/steel casings behind the AK bolt and the gun still fires while smashing the empty case. Well-built guns work even if you shoot them far beyond their normal use. Mag dump after mag dump, and then purposely throwing things in the chamber, and then dumping it in mud is not normal conditions. No gun will work when those things are done to it. You should read some WWI combat veterans experiences with their old Springfield '03s and how they guarded against them. They all took care of their guns because their lives depended on them.

    Thanks for the talk-up on the useful qualities of the AK series of rifles. I have found mine to be trustworthy even with minimal maintenance. As in a quick swab with diesel and lubing with motor oil off a dipstick. None of my trusty pre-ban Chinese have ever coughed or farted with that kind of care, even with a steady diet of the old corrosive Chinese ammo. Maybe living in a desert-ish climate has something to do with keeping the rusty-barrel blues away. I worked rural mine security, living in a wall-tent and made it home one day a week. We did a lot of shooting as it was one of our few pastimes, and learned that the AK can be TRUSTED. More so than the Armalite rifles, altho I really like them too.. just not so much in mountain and desert terrain.
    Accuracy-wise my old Kragujevac (Made NEW for Mitchell Arms in the early 1980's, NOT the Century rebuilds of recent years) is minute of man accurate with the stock sights to 300-500 meters- maybe more but I can't really see to shoot further than that without a scope. AS with all AK's Ive used, the "battle-sights" on my Kragujevak are set at 300 meters. ORIGINAL semi-auto AKs built by Kragujevak for sale by Mitchell in the USA are THE MOST accurate AKS of any I have fired, Id snatch one up in a heartbeat if I found a used one floatin around my neck of the hills. These are not to be compared with the hack-job N-PAP and Whatever-PAP builds or even the C39's available these days.
    In fairness, I must mention the fact that the Serbs didnt see fit to chrome their AK bores, for whatever reason. Seems unlikely that they didnt possess the technology to do so as everyone else chromed their AK bores. The only reason I've heard that makes any sense is that unchromed bores are intrinsically more accurate than chromed- dunno if that's true or not. Chromed bores, being harder and less prone to the destructive effects of the corrosive primer salts in most ComBloc ammo, probably outlast unchromed bores given similar treatment and conditions. FWIW, corrosive primers have a much longer shelf-life than non-corrosive, or that WAS the case. That may no longer be true with modern American-made ammo. Dunno... as an aside, I have opened crates of Yugo-made PRE-WW2!! 7.92X57!! Mauser ammo!! that was marked with the Royal Yugoslav Crest and still fresh, accurate and good to go. How it made it thru ww2 without being used is beyond me.
    One Yugo AK I got to handle came FROM THE FACTORY with a scope... I want to say Zeiss but memory fades with the years. I believe that it was fixed and set so the irons could be used in a pinch. Had I known that such were available I would have sold the wife to obtain one. As close as Im likely to get to a scoped Yugo will be a scoped Mauser 24/47 or 48A. Many of such were in use during the Sarajevo campaign of the Bosnian War, very effectively. Thanks again, will look for more of your reviews!

    I got a pair of Arsenal Sam7 AK's and they're great. Even after 400 rounds, being hot and dirty, the AK was still able to hit 28/30 rounds on a man sized target at the 300 yard range. That was also my first time shooting at that distance and only my second time shooting the rifle. So, with an AK, I think I did pretty good for a newbie.

    At 3:09 - I'll tell you where the "Myth" came from. I enlisted into the US Army in 1982. In Basic Combat Training we were told that the M-16A1 Rifle had a maximum effective range of 460 meters, and that the AK-47 had a maximum effective range of only 300 meters. This was in Army literature during that time period. Was/is it actually a myth? I don't know since I have not had the opportunity to do any practical scientific tests to either confirm or deny this "Myth". I CAN TELL you, however, that the 7.62mm x 39mm bullet travels at a considerably lower rate of velocity than the 5.56mm x45mm bullet and, in most cases, greater velocity means flatter trajectory and longer range thus translating to greater accuracy. I have never owned an AK-47 or AK-74 rifle. I HAVE owned a Russian SKS, however, but never tried shooting anything beyond 150 yards or so with it. So, the long and short of my opinion is that I just don't know for certain. But a trusted Paul Harrell might shed some light on this:

      Hello there. In my country (and I know this because my dad was in the army), it was standard training to hit a man-sized target at 400 meters with 5.45 AKs and 300 meters with 7.62 AKs. This is with iron sights, it isn't the maximum effective range of the weapon. I asume that is how the myth got over the iron curtain over to you guys in the US! Take care!
      PS.
      The 5.56 round and 5.45 round are not lethal past 200 meters, whereas the 7.62 round, being heavier and not losing as much energy, is lethal past 300 :)

      @@xdskroot7247 - Well, it's been my opinion for many years that the AK packs more punch but is less accurate. A hit at 500 yards with a 5.56 is better than a miss with the more powerful 7.62x39. But up close, the 7.62 will do more damage.

      no its lower accuracy is inherent in the CARTRIDGE, 5.56 is simply much more accurate and that is the "benchmark" people use not taking into account the actual practical accuracy required to do the job its meant for. AR-15 will always be more accurate, but AK and similar rifles are more than accurate enough to do the job with much more efficient results when actually scoring that hit.

  • @EngineeringWizard11
    @EngineeringWizard11 7 лет назад +13

    Ok, minor point here about "Cheap guns". In the real world, 'cheapness' has nothing to do with the price tag. Gone are the days when the two were equivalent, and it's too bad that people still think that way about it. With all of these start-up AR companies coming around, much of their price tag has little to do with quality and everything to do with how many CNC machines they need to pay off. Similarly, you've got the AR manufacturers who are high on the smell of their own body odor who just tack an extra $1,000 onto their guns because of the name. Then, you've got the old, boring standbys from S&W, Bushmaster, and Colt that you can pick up for $750-$950 that have decades of reliability and good workmanship behind their names.
    I'd pick up a $650 S&W M&P-15 Sport over a $1,800 Patriot Arms Super-Duper-XX-15 (The best in AR-15 'innovation' ever since 6/16/16) every day of the week.

    What shooters actually say is a basic AK is not as accurate as a basic AR and a top shelf AK is not as accurate as a top shelf AR. This statement is true. At 400 to 600 yards it's even a greater disparity. I still love the AK because I don't expect to do any self defense shooting as a civilian over 50 to a 100 yards at best and as you say it is combat accurate for sure.

    • @justinreid7459
      @justinreid7459 7 лет назад +7

      Jim Assalone shooters mostly don't count because majority of shooters only fire their guns on perfect range days and don't actually train. with a rifle like this, a combat rifle only has to be "minute of man" accurate. it only has to hit the torso in the kill zone out to 300m. most will go to 500m. that's accurate. we're not talking shooting for groups. that's not combat shooting which is the accuracy we're talking about. a combat ar isn't "accurate" either. typically the more accurate a gun, the less reliable it becomes as it needs to fit tighter. the tighter something fits together, the less reliable it is under adverse conditions.

    • @godgunsandgoldens

    Nice review! A classic arm that is in some ways timeless. I will bet that they gain popularity into the future...a good thing!

      Particularly annoyed by an AK that won't accept MFT Tekko hand guard! Before you invest in MidWest or Zenin or any upscale optics mount, spend $50 on the Tekko to see if hand guard mounted dots are a waste of time on your AK (you may never want to change it out!). Milled AKs don't fit them, but any stamped receiver SHOULD. A tightly fitted lower guard uses four bolts that allow the top to act as a canopy over that hot gas tube! You can use a gas tube mount (Ultimak, Troy etc), but then you're restricted to $700 dots that will take the heat! And that's assuming the gas tube mount will fit!

    The reason why the full auto setting is first has nothing to do with mentality at all.
    Thats just the way the cards fell in regards to how the selector tab inside the fire control group interacts with the interruptor.
    A little bit back prevents the interruptor from doing its job and all the way back allows it to work.
    Simple mechanics.

    The AK-47 , must be reliable even of today , because the Russian Military still depend on this Rifle, I'm sure the Russian Military could have went to something else by now these days , so the question would ask why should they , maybe they believe if the Rifle just works and is not broken, then why fix it .
    The Russian are not stupid people, and if this Rifle did not perform threw all the elements of boundaries of stress , and has past those test of such , proofs that this Rifle is Battle worthy.
    Which the Wars this Rifle had been in and is being used in War of today, should be able to tell us something, that this is one of the greatest weapons of War , the AK-47 .
    History is fact , and history dose not lie , so let history be the truth , and may history always revel it's self.

      bobbluntman the us military can't field the ak platform because of politics not capability. The US only uses american made or at most one of our allies

      James Michael Torres Greaux The Ak platform dosen't fit the american doctrine of infrantry. The AR 15 is that much more modular and desgined as a rifle first machine gun second that we still use it. Low operating costs ontop of easy maitance held the bar so high the XM8 couldnt topple it.

      The Russians recently designed new rifles for their military. They're changing to the new AK-12 and AK-15 and they look amazing. Check them out there are videos on RUclips.

    That 3rd myth is the one that always gets under my skin. In my experience, it's a lot easier to accidentally switch an m4 over to burst than it is to switch an ak to auto if you're in hurry.

    guns should be reasonably inexpensive. there isn't a AK on the planet worth over 500 bucks. government regulation and greed has caused the over inflation of gun prices.

      cannon m I feel like people sitting there thinking to themselves "Hey this gun is worth more than X amount of money" has more to do with why guns sell for what they do rather than the government saying "oh no you have to charge X amount per gun". Its this little thing called supply and demand

    As a person who lives in a ex soviet country that has Russian AK's i can say one thing, as accuracy goes it is garbage non of the AK's i used shoot straight. You might be using fancy US build AK's that are different from the original ones but the Russian aks don't shoot straight. The M4 are good but the best guns from what i used was Tar-21
