Took me just over 6.5 hours with 5-10 min rests every hour and plenty of stops to take pictures. I was tired at the end of it, 77 km from Onomichi to Imabari. I’d do it again in the future if I ever come back to Japan for sure. I’ll probably rent an electric assist bike to make to easier

@@rmc23 I started in Onomichi. It's such a beautiful small port city to explore. I think it's one of the prettiest cities in Japan, so much charm and character. Don't miss out on doing the temple walk up the hill, the shopping arcade, the cat alley, and try the local Omonichi style ramen. I stayed there for 3 days. 1 full day to explore Onomichi. The next day, I woke up early, rented a bike, and started cycling by 830 am, but I suggest doing it earlier by 745-8 am. Once I got to the town of Imabari by 3 pm, I dropped off my bike by JR Imabari station, and took the bus back to Onomichi. I didn't stay on the other side, but if you're planning to stay the night at Imabari, probably look for a place close to JR Imabari station. I highly recommend it, but also check to make sure the weather is good and not raining on the day you plan to do it. 1 full day to explore the town, and 1 full day to do the cycling route, and the next day leave.
Chris, I don't know if you'll see this but I want to thank you! After watching this video, I added this ride to my Japan itinerary last week and I couldn't be happier. I took a Shinkansen from Kyoto to Fukuyama, followed by a JR line to Onomichi where I rented a road bike from the Giant store. I had to rent it for 2 days in order to leave it in Imabari the next morning, but it was so worth it. Thanks again! I never would have known about this without your video. BTW, I hit up Himeji on the way back. That was something special as well. To anyone wanting to do this: you can buy a bus ticket back to the other side just in front of Imabari Station. Take care.

Man, I'm always amazed by the quality of your videos. The photography, the editing and the content itself are absolutely incredible. Thank you for the amazing work!
I really didn't see a full shot of Chris on his bicycle but Sharla is sitting way too low on her bicycle. When your pedal is at the bottom of the rotation your leg should be almost fully extended but with the knee still slightly bent, that makes it a lot easier to pedal because you don't have to move your legs as much during a full rotation of the pedal. If your seat doesn't raise high enough for you to do that then you need a larger bicycle. And if you're going to get a new bicycle I would recommend going to a professional bicycle shop to have them get you the right size and help set it up for you properly.
You may be surprised at how short the seatposts are on some Japanese bicycles. While most women are small, a few Japanese guys can be just as tall as Westerners, so it is odd. Always wise to check, if you plan on hiring a bicycle in Japan.
I have many friends who ride bikes semi-pro; it's easy to get a properly fitted bicycle in Japan, if not a bit expensive. Asking the Tokyo Creative crew to get them the right bikes for the mission is a pointless endeavor, they made no attempt to learn about the equipment they'd need to not injure the participants.
@@Crazt I think Chris already mentioned it but they have to stick to Western made bikes cos apparently the Japanese only use one Gear despite being able to make pretty much everything in the world bit apparently not bikes😂🤦♂️
You can find decent bikes if you look around a bit. Japan, of course, has everything from very heavy (inexpensive) city bikes for commuting to very high-end road bikes. Some of the best bike gear in the world comes from Japan.
@@ashuribear3435 Infrastructure is about public or common use works. It's definitely top notch compared to most nations on Earth, shame at the end of the day you can wank without your neighbors listening in.
I cycled the Shimanami Kaido last December based on your recommendation in another video. I was woefully unprepared because the owner of the hostel I had stayed in the day prior ensured me it was a "mostly flat easy time". It rained essentially the entire time I was cycling and was definitely the offseason, but overall I loved it. The scenery is fantastic, it is so easy to navigate, and I felt like I could conquer the world when I was finished (as long as that conquering didn't require sitting down because pain).
Thanks for the great clip Chris & Sharla. We finally got to do the Shimanami Kaido last month after seeing this and hoping to go for a few years. I agree that it is among the best scenery I have seen in Japan. We did it at a slow pace over 1.5 days to take it all in but could be easily done in a day if you start reasonably early. The uphills to the bridges aren't really too bad as they are graded at a reasonable 3%. Can imagine Chris was feeling it after cycling across Japan. Onomichi is a lovely port side village with plenty of accom/ eating options. Imabari at the other end was not exciting at all. See you again
It's almost as beautiful as Norway. Just kidding, here it is very nice, and Norway is very nice. Choosing is foolish, except for Japanese and Norwegians. But they have chosen already. Do you see a similarity too?

Thanks for sharing this !
The flirting is off the charts when he says he is "being rewarded with an incredible view" and focuses on Sharla's face...
She's happily married.
That was smoooooth af indeed
It's british humour... He was being sarcastic.
@@goosenuggets9693 I'm British.
Peter Peterson Apparently not...
I think Sharla is a delight to have.
I really enjoy the shots of Chris talking to the camera that also shows the beautiful Japanese blue sky.
7:33 Best part.
nice find!!
That was a really smooth move on Chris' part.... 😁
I just thought that I would bring your attention to the fact that almost 140 years ago, someone invented a thing called a "car". It makes travelling quite a bit easier, just if you weren't aware
Lies.
The car is a legend made by the government
Ew imagine travelling in a car rather than a bicycle
This post brought to you by bike gang
If you drive through you wouldn't experience and immerse as much as what you have by cycling.
Who needs cars. In Japan there is something called a power-assisted bicycle (or e-bike for short). Makes cycling up hills a breeze. You'll see it in action at 10:40
This series is really turning into a great youtube episodes both giving us fun and letting us learn about japan, which makes me want to take the journey too!!. :) take care to you Chris and to everyone!
11:00 Oh, don't mind me, I'm just watching, how the light on the bridge (right side of the screen) is flickering in sync with the music.
The intro song is: Look where that got you - Mattie Maguire
Outro : Elevator ecstasy - Jive ass sleepers
This intro theme and outro theme are so iconic
This is my favourite episode. I really really want to come and cycle this route.
Thanks for toughing out the cycle, video is stunning! Thanks for showing the map too 😊
I was born and grew up in a place close to Seto Inland Sea. We sometimes talk about mother nature and stuff, and Setouchi (how we call this sea) is just the perfect "mother sea" to me.
Shimanami Kaido looks great and you made me want to give it a try as well. Thanks for sharing. ☺
8:52 "The bridge just melts in your mouth!"
This IS the greatest youtube show I've seen. Goddamn production quality is amazing. This is a thousand times better than any travel show that has ever aired on TV.
I've been getting recommended all videos Chris has with Sharla out of nowhere
You totally did it justice, don't worry. That drone shot of the final bridge made my heart hurt with how beautiful it was.
Seeing Sharla and Chris together is always awesome! The view of the mountains and the sun going down is beautiful, hopefully one day I am able to visit!
I think that was one of the most beautiful vlogs I've ever seen, great job to all the team!
Man, I'm always amazed by the quality of your videos. The photography, the editing and the content itself are absolutely incredible. Thank you for the amazing work!
'This place is hands down the most beautiful place in Japan' shows off Sharla in all her glory. Nicely done Chris, nicely done!
“Hey BSauce, Chris here. Ever since the dawn of time, mankind has loved bridges. But what are bridges?”
*cue retro synth music*
* doooooooooo
doot duuuuuuuuhhhh *
Criminally underrated comment
I swear this man is in love with Sharla
ohh yeah! Always super exited to see a notification of my favourite channel :)
The most profound statement is.....”there’s a mosquito on your face” truly profound. And a great life lesson to be learned from the wise Shar
Chris, you're looking so much healthier. The transformation since the start of your trip is incredible. Sharla is cute as ever.
0:05 Chris and Sharla are confirmed dating. Congrats to both of you!!
I've never seen a long dedicated bridge just for cycling. Must be fun to ride such at your own leisure without worrying about traffic.
It looked like it was on a deck below the auto roadway.
I love how you guys "argue" with each other. It's so much fun!!!
I really like when you talk to locals. It gives the viewer insight into what daily life in different parts of Japan is like. Keep it up Chris! がんばって!
Is it just me or does Japan seem to have rediculously good infastructure, like omg.
Japan really has ridiculously amazing infrastructure. I mean, who are gonna use those large bridges between those tiny islands?
Yet paper thin walls in apartments where you can hear your neighbors fart, but yes they do have amazing bridges :)
Ashuri Bear アシュリ can you hear anything from their bathroom .-.
Glamouroki yep i can hear the water swish back and forth even 🙃🙃
@@ashuribear3435
Infrastructure is about public or common use works. It's definitely top notch compared to most nations on Earth, shame at the end of the day you can wank without your neighbors listening in.
This series even has rewatch value
The sharla and chris collabs are so good
They smashed at the end
"The most beautiful place in Japan" Cues shot to Sharla. Coincidence?? ;)
I think not
you have done it justice look soo beautiful !! wish i could go over there to visit and just take that view in in person
I don’t know what’s wrong with me I’ve missed so many but I have no regrets as I can now binge this like a Netflix series 👌
Wow, it is incredibly beautiful scenery, thanks so much for sharing it.
It's almost as beautiful as Norway. Just kidding, here it is very nice, and Norway is very nice. Choosing is foolish, except for Japanese and Norwegians. But they have chosen already.
Do you see a similarity too?
@@robotzking4501 You sound like a Dutch guy married to a Scotch woman.
@@robotzking4501 I'm Dutch. And I saw Dodge online, so I guess you're not the Robert Paul I haven't seen a while. Friend of a friend. He could shorten his name to Rob Pal...
Watching this to relive my own memories of cycling here. Amazing experience all around!
This brings me back to a sunset I witness in Itsukushima in august 2018. One of the most peaceful moment I ever experience. Thank You so much for bringing back the memories, Chris!
Wow! Japan is truly the most beautiful place! 😍 🇯🇵
They're so cute together!
chris looks like hes aged 10 years
I bet he really appreciated this comment xD
@Gilgamesh891 how so?
He hasnt aged, hes collected wisdom
Tends to happen if you lose weight around the face suddenly lol. Cycling for as consistently as he has recently, I can't say I'm surprised
no he aint, he's doing well
Beautiful shots, Chris. And you look better than ever. This cycle has been a great series for us fans, and for you. You are finally fit.
Chris and Sharla, you are definitely in the top three best foreign vloggers in Japan hands down! Keep doing what you do and stay safe, cheers from Sweden!
