I absolutely get your point of not being able to translate exactly what you want to say in japanese. I have been living in France for more that five years now (married to a French man, so I speak it all the time), with German being my native language. Two languages that are not that "far away" from each other, but still...often it is impossible to be understood the way I want to be. There are linguists who have studied that phenomenon, Barbara Cassin published a "Dictionary of untranslatables", words from different languages you can't really explain in any other language. Often, these words are closely linked with the culture, the history or the "way of living" in a country, but some are really surprising because they seem so "normal". So no matter how perfectly you speak a second language, you won't be able to always say exactly what you want!
@@alanlee1355 I don't perceive it as depressing, but it certainly is frustrating! Then again, it shows how unique and rich all of our languages are. And yes, sometimes you can't even find the right word in your own language - but maybe it exist in an other language! ;)
The way Chris feels about speaking Japanese is the way I feel about speaking Spanish now... which is kinda sad because it's my native language. But I've been abroad so long (19 years), I hardly use it outside of speaking with my family, so English is my primary language now. I did half my teens and on learning and speaking English. My sense of humor as a young man and now an adult in my 30s developed in English. It sucks, because I literally feel like I can't express myself properly in Spanish anymore... my sardonic attitude is there, but because of the cultural and linguistic differences in the languages, and due to my ever diminishing vocabulary, in Spanish I just come across as bitter and mean-spirited, really. So I have to tone it down. I feel like I'm not being myself, entirely. It's a really odd feeling.
ChileanIggy I have a bit of a similar experience, but with my situation being different. My parents immigrated to the USA before having me, so I mostly speak english as a result and only speak spanish with family. Its so difficult to express myself in spanish since I only have a limited knowledge in the language (I barely remember things like conjugations etc) and as a result, I just sound serious, and I come across as awkward and monotone. Meanwhile, I’m way different when speaking english with my friends since I know the language perfectly and am more expressive.
Language changes and so does time and expectation. Have you lost what you had, or has the viewpoint of what you are and how you view yourself shifted as well? I think both are probably true. Countries and communities experience change and even though language is necessary to practice as an art rather than a hobby, it's the world shifting around art and hobby that change the perspective of the recipient I think.
Oh man you are scarying me xD im 17 years old and i am learning both english and japanese, spanish being my native language. My dream is to live in japan working as a programmer but you are scarying me with the thing that you say lol i dont want to forget my native language once i start to live in japan :(
You should fix that by reading literature in Spanish and re-enrich your Spanish vocabulary. Me and most of my friends have exactly the same problem with our Serbian, now we even converse in English 30% of the time.

Ive heard from multiple sources that japanese is a pretty worthless language to learn. All japanese are required to take 6 years of english in schools so pretty much everyone speaks it, at least a little. Several have said that if you start to speak japanese to someone, and then they will respond back in english because its so rare they get a chance to practice with a native. As far as I can tell its not really necessary to learn unless you are actually going to live in japan.
idk why, but I love Japanese. just the flow of having a vowel after every consonant is very soothing. would love to learn it one day. it's honestly one of the most interesting languages out there imo
Actually find you very interesting when speaking Japanese and would be great to see the odd video here and there in Japanese. Also think you and Sharla make an awesome team and wouldn't want her replaced with anyone!
I'm bilingual (Welsh and English) and despite being Welsh by birth, I find it incredibly difficult to speak Welsh for long periods of time. The only time I really use Welsh is at school when I speak to teachers. I'm trying to learn Japanese by myself at the moment and it's very difficult so I commend Chris for being able to speak it so well. Props to you.
Same to me, I'm native Spanish speaker, and I have English as second language, when I speak a loon time using English I feel pretty tired, and still being difficult to me to neutralize the Spanish accent
This is actually one of my favourite episodes, maybe because I really like how you’re challenged to speak only Japanese, and it’s so inspiring to see 2 foreigners speak Japanese so fluently!

when you speak to Ryotaro in english it's pretty savage too lol
i'm glad im not the only one who noticed this. i know the brits like to lay in on thick with their mates and i know ryotaro must know (as well as all we dont see outside the video) - but some of the cracks leaving him nervously laughing make me wince. it must be super confusing then filtered again back through japanese.
To be fair, Ryotaro is not exactly gentle on Chris either. It just shows through in his behavior rather than in his speech per se.
@@tylerfritz5970 Yeah in England it means you really feel comfortable with someone and like them if you can "take the piss". Ryotaro lived in the UK for a while no? I'm sure he'd get it by now.
Very savage indeed. Some of the so-called "jokes" I've seen Chris making towards Ryotaro sound more like put-downs designed to make them feel bad about themselves. What's a friend if he makes you feel bad about yourself all the time?
@@radbirdy It's just British friendly banter between mates. It's normal to pick on your friends in a joking/sarcastic tone.

Great series Chris! I'm really looking forward to the next video. This series make me almost consider to cycle through Japan myself during spring break.. almost...

Anna Robin that's depressing to anyone that feels that way. I feel this way also in my own language.
@@alanlee1355 I don't perceive it as depressing, but it certainly is frustrating! Then again, it shows how unique and rich all of our languages are. And yes, sometimes you can't even find the right word in your own language - but maybe it exist in an other language! ;)
@@alanlee1355 I think you mean 'frustrating'... not 'depressing', LMAO.
Amico no te sientas mal, arriba los corazones

Its nice watching this now knowing you two are together now.. 😊
