I'm sorry that you had to deal with this -- thieves suck! That being said, I really appreciate you taking the time to create this video. It was super helpful! Hopefully you don't have to deal with this again in the future!
Much appreciated! I'm fortunate to be able to have my truck parked within about 20 ft of my bedroom window so I can hear when anything's happening to it (or so I like to believe.) Vehicle break-ins and outright thefts are way up in my area, and yes, thieves suck big time.
I have the side oven windows that they call windoors and I broke one when flipping my camper to carpet it. This gives me some hope in fixing it. It has latches in the window so i don’t know how much more complicated it will make it.
Mine also had a latch on the vertical center post that locked the sliding window in place when it was closed. I just deleted that whole center post and put a solid piece of plastic in
The plastic store near me was able to cut the plastic sheet to exactly the size and shape to fit my window frame. I was pleasantly surprised by that, having expected to purchase a simple rectangle and cut it to shape myself. I just brought the aluminum frame to them and 2 days later they had the plastic cut to fit. I had to insert it into the frame myself, which wasn't a big deal.
I used 1/4" 6061 T6. I sourced a rectangle of it from a local metals place and cut it the size of shape. It was pricey, but still much cheaper than replacement glass from the manufacturer, and absolutely more durable.
@@matthewschwartzkopf3829 Mine was held in place by several screws around the interior perimeter. I just unscrewed them and coaxed the frame out carefully.
I have a a.r.e. camper topper on my work truck....id like to replace at least one of the sliding side windows with a hinged window i can open from outside ... apparently i could order one from the a.r.e. dealer but it would be close to $400.... maybe i could do something similar to what you did here, and add a hinge and latch?
Great question. I thought about doing that on my side windows but decided that - for my use case - the benwfit wasn't worth the effort. However, the hinge installed on the factory glass door at the back of the shell is barely strong enough to support the weight of the aluminum panel I installed there. To rectify this, I plan to replace it with a 2" stainless steel piano hinge that I purchased from mcmaster.com. That will make the aluminum window much more secure against theft since right now, a person could fairly easily pry the entire door off. You might be able to use the same sort of hinge for what you're thinking of doing.
id like to know how you made that one window aluminum!! i’m in the process of doing it right now with my truck and i would love to see how you went about it! great video!
The plastic store I purchased it from cut it to the precise shape I needed to fit into my frame. I had to pay extra for that service of course, but it was definitely worth the money for the time it saved me.

Great video! Thanks for posting.
You're welcome, I'm glad to give back to the community that I get so much from.

Nice work, thanks for sharing
Great idea! What thickness aluminum did you go with for that back window replacement? Thanks

@@chuckzissman okay great, thank you!
@@Dschuyler707 you're welcome. Feel free to reach out if you have questions.
What’s the best way to get the window frame out without damaging it?

Thanks Garrett. I'll try to put together a quick video on that in the next few days. It's pretty straightforward.
@@chuckzissman I would also like to learn how you did the aluminum replacement. Hoping to do the same to make my current glass windoor more secure.
Did you cut the plastic your self for the window or buy it pre-made?

hopefully the thieves see this video .
