I was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany in the late '70's and early '80's and a friend who was a German Doctor had one. It was tiny. We would blaze around the autobahn at better than 90 MPH and he wasn't exactly a good driver. They came out with a "sports package" I believe was the Alpine A5 (Europe only). It came with a souped up engine, roll bar, racing harnesses and trick wheels and paint. Fortunately my friend was to tall (6 foot 6 inches) and couldn't fit in with the roll bar. Disaster averted (for the time being). One night we came out of a restaurant in Wiesbaden and parked out front was a BEAUTIFUL ALPINE WHITE BMW M1. I was drooling all over my self (being careful not to drool on the car) and my friend said "Forget it Sergeant. I am ONLY a doctor, NOT A DENTIST" (dentists made BIG money back then). The owner appeared as I was practically swooning and they talked for a few minutes and he turned to me and said "Get in. He's going to take you for a quick ride". So of course I jumped in and we headed to the autobahn for a quick run. Unfortunately the speed limit was 120 KPM in that stretch so he couldn't open it up, but what a blast. When we got back I was in love. But sorry to say, I couldn't convince him to buy one. Instead he bought a Golf GTI. THAT was a mistake because he would take on BMW's, Mercedes and Porsches and give them a run for their money. It beat the hell out of that Renault.
I had one. A block of poop! Shifter came of in my hand. Rust king. I put it in the front yard for free, someone stopped within an hour and took it away. Good home for a rattle snake!
I remember them, but I was a teenager back then. There was some rally version with fender bulges, probably had 58 HP. Also dig the pronunciation, I have always called it a Rey-Nalt. Others trying to sound more worldly say it wren-nough. Pft.

I'm glad there wasn't a body inside :) Crazy that it only has 3 studs to hold the wheel on..
