John Doran meets Adam Ant in the sixth chapter of our British Masters series, where John interviews the most influential and colorful figures from British popular music history. Like previous British Masters, including Gary Numan, Aidan Moffat, Johnny Marr, and Bryan Ferry, Adam Ant was a notable outlier in his genre, and was also responsible for a lot of allergic reactions in the 80s through his starting of the British face-painting craze.
In John's own words, Adam Ant's "brand of pop was one of the most berserk and adventurous ever heard, and remains a symbol of what the pure flight of the imagination can achieve."
Check out previous episodes of the British Masters here!
Gary Numan - • Gary Numan, Synth Pop ...
Aidan Moffat - • Arab Strap's Aidan Mof...
Johnny Marr - • Johnny Marr - The Brit...
Bryan Ferry - • Roxy Music's Bryan Fer...

A true British icon. The guy is a legend , love listening to his interviews , I feel he hasn't had the recognition he deserves ,from the industry
I agree in regards to recognition, been listening to his eighties hey day albums and they just blasts of exuberance , hooks and pop innovation
Dirty Beast off that last album showed as well Ant can do subtle and wistful too
I!Agree With All Of You About ADAM ANT 🐜 🤣 😉 😂 😏 🙄!
Hard agree
My mum and uncle used to love him when they were growing up. I had always liked the songs I heard, but I recently have took the deep dive…. And I’m honestly blown away. The fact that his sings aren’t still on radio rotation upsets me. I’ve got all my mums old records though, so I can’t wait to dig out the original 7’s😀
sunderland till i die lol
Adam Ant / Adam and the Ants wasn't an 80s product. The man is timeless. He just happened to be in the 80s when he brought about his out-of-this-world brilliancy! But he could have done it any time, regardless of his year of birth. The man is a timeless genius.
I completely agree, alot of his songs to me still sound fresh and new and different.
I'm from Brazil, and I discovered Adam and The Ants around 2008 or 2009, when I heard Ant Music. I never thought it was a song made in the early 80s. I got hooked on that song and when I discovered the other songs by Adam Ant I was amazed wondering how I had never heard of this artist before. MTV in Brasil never showed anything about him and never showed any video of him. This man is a genius in my opinion and his work is indescribable. Very underestimated by the mainstream media, but I am happy to see that he is still recognized by people today.
I!Agree With All Of You About ADAM ANT 🐜 LookSo SEXY And His Band Members Are SO Cool 😎💯%!THOSE Singing Vocals Are SO SEXY Too 😍 😉 ❤ 😘 👌 💕 😍 😉 ❤ 😘 👌 💕!
1977-78 was their finest
Adam is such a beautiful creature and intelligent, romantic visionary. I love him. This is one of the absolute best interviews I've seen with him. Adam you are the best!!!
The first album I bought with my own money was Prince Charming when I was 10. I got that and a Kings of the Wild Fronteir t-shirt from the record shop for a tenner. Then wandered around with a white stripe on my face for a few months while my parents worried about me getting beaten up for wearing makeup. Thanks for this. It was a wonderful interview (again) and I'm quite taken back to a time I'd near;y forgotten.
Adam was my first teen idol. Rediscovering him by the way he speaks out about his bipolar condition is special to me. After all these years, my likewise attraction to the flamboyant appears to connect me to him in more than just the external level. Very grateful for it.
Adam is a hugely unique & underated musical artist, he seems like a chap who battles his demons. He has given me many happy memories, I wish him all the luck on lives often difficult journey. ❤️
ADAM IS SUCH A HUMBLE/COOL GUY-LOVED SEEING HIM & HIS BAND ON TV AS A KID THE MUSIC & ENERGY WERE AMAZING-GLAD HE'S STILL DOING IT & COMES ACROSS HAPPY-GOOD INTERVIEW THAT NICE 1 X X
Amen 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 TO That One!Grasshopper!
John Doran is one of the best interviewers ever: Great questions, properly researched and is actually interested in the subject matter.
Narduwar is the best lol
He's also 2 faced, slagging off the Clash to John Lydon then got Paul Simmonon to sign his Clash album hhmmm!
@@deerhunter2218 He is a JOURNALIST ! That, my friend, is what they do.
@@silverapples75 He is definately not a hippy!!
@@silverapples75 you are the one who has "psychedelic stuff" about LSD on your channel, so YOU are more of a hippy than John!
Adam And The Ants were a magnificent band with great pop songs and he was (is) handsome as hell. You can't lose with that combination.
John Doran is an incredible personality. Good questions, understands he’s not the focus of the interview and understands his role, and is always witty and charming
I was 15 when i first heard "Kings of the Wild Frontier", now i'm 54 and it's still one of my favorite albums ever! Thanks Adam!!
You are me
Ive always been a huge fan of Adam Ant. He's a romantic at heart,a beautiful man and artist. As an American I've never been familiar with John Doran. He is a brilliant interviewer.
He has the best energy, so calm and open and not up himself, rare
Saw Adam in 2014 in Tulsa Oklahoma, at Cains ballroom. It was a dream come true. I still love everything about him, and I am a fan for life!!
What a legend .
Underated British artist .
What a fantastic guy, Adam Ant.
When I was about 7, Adam Ant was the biggest pop star on earth. I used to light up when his music was played, still love it.
It's the double drum kits on live shows that had me fall in love with drums. Love you Adam!
John is skilled because he listens. Rare skill it would seem.
Just saw Adam perform for the first time, an articulate, devilishly-handsome, creative and talented person. I'm a convert!
So great to see a childhood hero so relaxed, humble and accessible. Great interview indeed!
Great interview!! Adam is such a cool, talented, intelligent, down to earth man and I'm happy he's back making music again
Mr Ant! Thank You for Prince Charming, Kings of the Wild Frontier and especially Dirk Wears white Sox. I loved and still love your music.
What an incredible talent, putting such energy into all of his performances, an absolute original, who always exudes smoldering sexuality. They just don't make them like that anymore.
Wishing you all the best Adam, always been a fan, was buying the records long after they were fashionable, my first musical hero
This is a while ago , hope Adam is still in fine form and health ! ... Icon for many people !
i had an adam ant poster on me bedroom wall,,,i loved that whole thing, i was a pit young but loved that kind of culture
Seen him live last year and again last week, fab, down to earth, great music
He is the only artist I regularly listen to from the 80s. And i love the 80s music
Adam Ant = Class Act! This was great!!!!! Hoist the Jolly Roger!!!!
First record I ever got in England when I was 11 was Prince Charming. I would listen to it over and over again and was fascinated by the music in it... still am :-)
Ponce chraming
Great interview. I'm a long time fan of Adam's. It's so good seeing him doing well.
i loved his comeback at live aid
What a refreshingly humble but awesome interview! A fan of Adam since I was a 9 year old wanna be punk to now a balder, fatter & older 49 year old 😂 AM4SP ✊
Adam can rock cutting edge fashion. First the frontiersman, then the pirate, and now the traditional Jew.
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
Cool One .... if I were a rich man, hubble, double, wubble, bubble, flubba dubba wubba dooo ....
Lol
A brilliant interview, I love the Ant beyond belief. You asked a great set of questions, well good. Xx
What a nice interview, Thank you
What an absolutely brilliant interview.
I had that poster in my room back in 81/82 Adam and the Ants were hot property back then in Australia 🇦🇺. God I was only 11 0r 12 . Good to see he’s still going ok.
He's such a cool talented and interesting man Adam ant
Excellent interview! Adam is so cool and laid back...
they told us to do a practice timed write today in English and the promt was "if you could go back to any time in history, where would you go and what would you see?" guess what i wrote about. lol
Great interview and Adam is still a HOTTIE 😍😍😍😍😍
Brilliant interview. Incredible. Thank you 10 years on.
That hair that looks like it's growing out of his ear is freakin me out! :O
It's his wild front ear
Thank you for the laugh, I hope more people see this!
You can’t unsee it😬

Well..Hello Adam..where you been?
Really enjoyed this.
Bloody brilliant ... As always ...
Fabulous interview with one of my heroes, you are obviously good at making Adam feel relaxed and happy to chat. He is a style icon, a true artist. I have fond memories of the first Ants gig I saw in Leeds 1981 :)
Enjoyed this video.
Johnny Depp definitely stole his persona!
Love them both 🥰
Ooooo - very good interview. Looking forward to seeing Adam perform again Stateside in September :) Lovely man.
Excellent,
an actual interesting interview with a bone-fide pop star. Nice insights and well measured questions. Bravo!
Legend!

Legend. Underapprecited.
John, do more of these.
Top man. Love him!
Dirk wears white socks is a masterpiece
I heard that there's a show of Nine Inch Nails and Adam doing "physical" in the mid-90s. if anyone has a video for this I appreciate it
It's definitely here on RUclips. I watched it a few weeks ago.
@@darkness904 you're right! I found it a little bit after I started looking... thank you!👍✌

Nice one
Well done. I'm not a fan of Adam Ant but this was still a good view. Really like this series. Please keep at it.
nice
Age frightens me
"I’m the dandy highwayman..."
Ponce Charming
The band's initial reluctance to change their appearance is reminiscent of the Spiders' from Mars similar gripes.
Seem like a gent
He does drink, does smoke, but what does he do ? How much did Vivienne Westwood get for the costumes ? he seems quite down to Earth actually.
Adam kind of looks like Johnny Depp here in this interview lol
You have that the wrong way round...
Interviewer kind of looks like a young Krist Novoselic
More like an old Krist (but with more hair)
That FUCKING background music!!!
Only crossed paths once with him, small cheap restaurant near the British Museum, about '78, did a good pizza with chips, he said no to the chips. Had a dumb waiter. Only two people in there.
Soon to be a Johnny Depp movie.
Vive le rock amazing zerox is a gem
I meant jokes is on them adam ant still a big star
Adam Ant beats anybody today
Look-Look-Lookin’ magazine? That was thee mag as a lad growing up in UK.
That and Razzle - It’s kinky it’s naughty and it’s only one pound forty. Great days.
👍👍👍
OMG THATS WHY HE SAT DOWN IN THE MO TOWN 25!!!!!!!
it's just a suit, did we forget the point of the interview was to indulge our self's with asked questions to educate us to information from the past, experiences and new information? not a fucking critique on fashion.
Since you would like some education and information the correct spelling and grammar is 'ourselves' (not our self's)
You can't beat Dirk Wears White Søx.
Malcolm McLaren came up with the idea for the look.
Is there an echo?
