I love this guy. One of the best engineers and that's demonstrated by his legendary credits and years in the game. Yet, he still uses plugins and relates to the average person e.g. mixing in untreated environments like the car...

Gain staging is a problem but u gotta realize that and distortion made a whole new genre in rap music so in a way it’s. A mistake/blessing/curse
That's a different type of distortion. Digital distortion that is a result of clipping is different from using distortion or saturation as an effect while mixing.
