      Mr. Malov is playing a "violoncello da spalla" ("shoulder cello" with 5 strings tuned in fifths, no frets), designed for violinists like Mr. Malow who want to play cello music. An arpeggione (6 strings, mostly tuned in fourths, with frets) is held between the legs like a cello but without an endpin. Here is a performance of this sonata on an arpeggione: ruclips.net/video/do9UgdfwM5Q/видео.html See Wikipedia for more information about the violoncello da spalla and the arpeggione. Mr. Malov also plays the violoncello da spalla on a fabulous recording of Bach's sixth cello suite, written for a 5-string cello: ruclips.net/video/wbH3JYfRjOQ/видео.html

    In my opinion, the violoncello da spalla has the best sound for this piece. I have heard this piece with the original instrument of the arppegione and found it shrill with its metal frets.

    Great playing from you both, and the tone color of the cello da spalla suits this sonata well. Question about the bow. Have you used Tourte-style bows with this instrument? What feelings do you have about using a baroque bow for later repertoire like Schubert, Beethoven, etc.?

    I've got a 5 String Cello. Sounds like you're using Steel Strings so that it holds tune. Wittner Fine tune pegs would allow the Cello to hold tune more.

      @@sergeymalov Dear Sergey. Well excellent music should be listen with high quality sound. RUclips and in general video is nice to watch and discover artist and music but when I listen to music, it is in the dark with closed eyes :)
      Just wondering, don't you have a friend playing horn, I would be interesting to listen to Frédéric Nicolas Duvernoy - Sonata No. 1 for Horn & Cello with Violoncello Da Spala instead of cello :) Would be great.
      I'm learning to play horn since less than 2 years as enthusiast . Next instrument will be violoncello da spalla for sure. I tried the cello and the feeling on the chest is incredible. I watch a lot of video from you and Badiarov and I definitely like the Da Spalla due to the form and how you play it. Cheers

      @@sergeymalovThis RUclips video is available in 1080p if one has a fast enough internet connection. While not as good as a Super Audio CD (SACD), it’s the best available streaming speed.

    Thanks, Sergey and Georgy. I played it several times over te weekend. Absolutely beautiful. One remark. I think in the recording the (beautifully played) piano part is a fraction too dominant. Which is of course interesting; is the violoncello da spalla an equal partner? I heard Sergey, Sigiswald and others in many recordings. Solo and with ensembles. This is the first recording where I think: the instruments sounds more as a viola than as a cello, with the beauty but also the flaws of that instrument. So is it the balance of the spalla with a powerful 20th century piano or the recording balance? How would it be with a Vienise fortepiano? How was (is) the tone of the arpeggione? Well, minor yet relevant detail. Musically it is a magnificent video, beautifully and poetically played. Nice, what you write Sergey, how you wanted to play it from the moment you heard it. Thanks again.

    • @tomjohn4889
      @tomjohn4889 4 года назад +1

      I wanted (needed) more balance also. Maybe a Fortepiano would be more complementary to the da Spalla

    • @ottofurst4063
      @ottofurst4063 3 года назад

      Beautiful playing! As to the balance I hear it that way too, a matter of mic placement and balance, the cello sounds too indirect compared to the piano. But hey it´s a living room recording ,so what?

    • @k_b7341
      @k_b7341 2 года назад +1

      @@ottofurst4063 I think the balance is just perfect, the piano being an equal partner in this wonderful recording - true chamber music.

    Allegro MODERATO. Why is this always played so quickly? It slows down in the usual place due to the tempo choice which ruins the structure. Very few pianists understand their role in the sonata.
