    The elephant in the room this interview ignored is the effect of social media. America may be going through another neurosis but this time it is very different to the 1950’s and 60’s due to the internet. No one can honestly say if and when this woke madness will fizzle out because we are in unchartered waters.

    • @annabizaro-doo-dah
      @annabizaro-doo-dah 3 года назад +26

      Agree. Not everyone who bandies phrases hot off the press from Academic papers have actually read them in context. Anyone can access and repeat the most incendiary ideas without fully understanding what's at stake on both sides of the argument. Social media is mainly driven by the most vocal members of a minority demographic (the young with a lot of time of their hands). A VOX POP repeating what receives the most favourable response. In other words an echo chamber that should be regarded with suspicion as a representation of popular opinion. It doesn't represent the majority of people.

    Daley: "The only people who came [to America] involuntarily were Africans." This is flat out untrue - it's just woke mythology. A large portion of the original population of the colonies were Irish and British natives who were condemned to transportation & servitude for "crimes" which were often political or simple poverty. In many cases their conditions and fate were no better than that of African slaves. This used to be common knowledge. Also, despite what Daley says class has actually been significant in US history. A lot of inherited wealth originated in royal land grants.

    • @davidmitchell1391
      @davidmitchell1391 2 года назад +18

      Partially agree, but their status was either as convicts serving a specific sentence ordered by a court of law, or indentured servants who, wishing to start a new life in the colonies, "voluntarily" agreed to serve a set number of years service. On completion of their sentence or indenture they were then as free as any other citizen. They were not chattel slaves (as were Black Africans) who faced absolutely no prospect of freedom and neither would their offspring.

      Not entirely true.
      Many Europeans, especially the Irish, were sold as chattel slaves to and in America. Most indentured servants were jerked around, robbed and otherwise kept in slavery for years beyond their original contract.

      They that up when they realized everyone had better ratings. Now, there's no trump in office and they want to claim they're going back.
      CNN was the less bonkers source for news when fox and MSNBC were going away from the center in different directions. Anyone on either side who thinks either of those two is objective is lacking nerve endings.

      I think it is similar as well. The USA media obfuscated the issues. Both Clinton and Tony Blair abandoned working class politics. Their attitude was that it was no longer relevant or getting votes. And Obama too. But in the USA there hasn’t been a working class awareness since the 1940’s, largely because of the McCarthy era and then most of the 1960’s was a “left” dissociated from the working class. It could hardly be categorized as “left” other than the MLK & Hampton movements. The Clintons are a perfect picture of the dissociated boutique left politics. And people on the economic left and right in general got sick of boutique politics.

    Janet Daley made an interesting early point about American homelessness. That reminded me of the movie "Wizard of Oz" about a girl seeking to return home. As a grandchild of immigrants to America, I certainly feel a lack of rootedness.
    Both America and Britain are grappling with economic globalization and 3rd world immigration, which have created winners and losers in both countries. This struggle has partly manifested in Trump and Brexit.
    The current division in American society is being exacerbated by wealthy extremists of both left and right who support the most extreme politicians and movements. Black Lives Matter, supported by Jeff Bezos and wealthy corporations, distracts from issues of economic inequality and insecurity. Oddly, BLM was founded by a few Black Communists who want to use race to break up the United States. They are allied with Islamists, like CAIR, who also want to destroy our liberal democracy.

    Yeah. Speaking as an American, having listened to this interview all the way through, I have to say some of what this woman says is true. But much of it is distorted nonsense. One salient problem is her analysis of what happened on January 6. There is a massive subterranean shift happening here, where a huge percentage of the people are becoming profoundly alienated from our government, our political process. It's increasingly being seen as an oligarchy with little meaningful democratic praxis above the state level, not a constitutional democratic republic.
    Trump is merely a transgressive symbol of that alienation, an expression of rebellion and contempt of the elite, disgust with a process that is no longer returning the expected results for a large percentage of people. If there was one message in the 2016 election, it's that people wanted radical control of immigration, a border wall, enforcement of current labor laws viz. immigration, and serious tariffs and protectionism for what's left of our industry - to include even leaving NAFTA. But what they got was a massive tax cut for the wealthy and no substantial movement on immigration at all.
    I don't think that Trump is the future here. There will either be a meaningful positive shift on the Federal level - which I do not expect - or very wicked things will come.. Things far worse than Trump or what happened on January sixth. If that happens, it will be largely the fault of this oligarchic elite, who are deliberately inciting it with their intransigent contempt of the democratic process.

Case in point - she disclaims similarities on causes of dissatisfaction between ‘rust belt’ and ‘red wall’ populations resulting in both groups voting right of centre, mostly for their first time ever. Why is she so far off the mark on this one? One factor could be that she strongly dislikes Trump and so cannot credit him with Anything. Drop the scales from your eyes, Janet. Trump being a threat to the Constitution is a case in point - Democrat chicanery on 'voter suppression' is 'legitimate'. The GOP, Trumpist reaction or counter-strategy is not legitimate. How odd!
      What if those currently supporting Trump imported an emotional and moral element to their argument, which they currently lack - would that then make the counter as legitimate as the original? Granted that 'moral' arguments seem to consist of claims made by paid activists?
      What needs to change for the counter for it to become legitimate or just a piece of the political furniture that pundits take for granted? Can pundits ever take the Trumpist counter for granted? It is a 'lie' whereas the Democrat lie is 'not a lie'? How odd!
      If not, why not? Is it the blessing of tax-funded activists, rather than public opinion that counts or are they somewhat equally weighted? If GOP begins to claim they are representing minority interests and they gain a substantial backing among voters - but not professional 'helpers' of the poor etc, is that enough? Is it the blessing of the pundits and activists combined that's needed to change the narrative or is one more important than the other? Who writes the rules?
      This is all rather odd and Daley seems to take a lot for granted and hasn't really thought very deeply about the issue.

    Janet Daley speaks from her experience without consulting actual history. Example, America began to enforce strict immigration laws favouring western Europeans to curtail Chinese and Jewish immigration beginning in the 1880s and culminating in the 1924 act. Also, she has a narrow scope of how immigration effected the slums of large cities such as Birmingham, London, and Liverpool where working class white communities were replaced largely by immigrants from her vast dominions, especially from the Indian continent and colonial outposts from the Caribbean.
    Regards Trump: large urban areas of religious Jews and Zionists(Christian and Jewish) voted for Trump because of his pro-Israel position. Their car caravans blocked and disrupted traffic with large Jewish populations- especially in New York.
    So much more to criticise about Janet Daley and her pro-Brexit position as well as her very much delusional respect to the US Constitution. No mention about police brutality against people of colour in either America or the UK, especially England.
    Positive: she does not recognise religion as a positive force as other guests of this program have argued.
