  • In this video I provide my first impressions of the Turner's Acryla Gouache Smart set. This medium is an acrylic paint than can be thinned with water and has a gouache-like matte finish. I had never used acrylic paints before but I have used gouache. I found these to be different in feel from gouache being much thicker and stiffer but overall I really like these and would use these for my backgrounds for colored pencil or coloring pages.

    Oh I’ve been so interested in this set because of the ruler. If I remember correctly it is for painting straight lines. The groove in the ruler is for using this sort of stick with a ball at the end that helps you.

    I've had these for a while and really like them. I use them with my regular acrylics. One of the reasons I tried these is because they were advertised as being good on non-porous surfaces without needing any base prep. (I'm more of a crafter.) I've tried them on metal (aluminum) and glass and have been pleased with the results. I've picked up several sets and tubes when they go on sale on various websites, so I now have a decent collection. I hope you like them.

    My opinion is that it’s acrylics. MATTE acrylics. The only thing it has in common with gouache is that it’s mostly opaque, it has a matte finish and you can dilute it down with water without it losing it’s binding properties. Besides those 3 things, it’s straight up acrylic paint. You cannot go back and rework it like a gouache. Instead of a watersoluable binder that allows you to re-work it, it has an acrylic polymer binder that is permanent, just like acrylic paint.
    But, thanks! I didn’t know what the ruler was for! Good catch!

      Yep! That’s what it says on the tubes is that it’s acrylic. But the three things are important. For me it’s also important that it can be wasted and cleaned with water as well as thinned with water. It also has a low odor which I also like.

    I would suggest trying regular gouache. They are like acrylics but can be reactivated with water. So less waste, no solvents. Can have the translucence of the watercolor or opaqueness like acrylic. Thanks for the review! Very helpful!

    Hold a thin stick and brush with the same hand, and the thin stick slides on the ruler groove , than brush can draw a straight line with the paint.

      No he is ok (I think) 😳😺 he just gets itchy sometimes and that’s when he starts licking. But if he gets his medicine and he’s not having a bad bout it’s not too bad. The vet doesn’t thing he’s in pain anyway. And I hope not. 😢 he gets insane amounts of affection though so I hope that helps him. 😺😻

    Nice to see another video from you, but I'm sitting out these. I've always disliked Acrylics. I don't like the short working time and I don't like their looks. I'm also wary of eastern brands in general.
    But of course, if you don't want them to be re-solvable,.. that, I suppose, is why people use Acrylics.

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  5 лет назад +5

      Well these WILL rewet if you go back in rather quickly, say within 15 minutes. No reason be wary of turners or Holbein both are solid reliable brands. Though I think liquitex just announced some of their acryla gouache paints.
      These are EXTREMELY matte and there is no way around that so if you don’t like the look of how matte they are that’s it. I do love the stay wet palette and have been able to work with them with paints that have stayed wet on the palette for going on 3 weeks now.

    I absolutely hate cleaning acrylics. 😱 Are these the same?

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  5 лет назад +1

      these are kind of. If you dont rinse your brush in soap and water after each use, you will have to clean up or lose the brush same with the palette but thats why i like the stay wet palette. You can turn over or toss a sheet if you dont want to wash it down with a bit of water. I dont think these are as hard or messy to clean as actual acrylics. all you need here is water and to remember to rinse of those brushes.
