I just trade off my old 1986 polar snowmobile for this 1982 yz Yamaha, o my goodness, adding this bike right next to my blue IT 465 .. It’s so cool to feel young again. He ha😊
@@CMSgarage96 yes indeed and I think I saw it on 500 yz I'm not sure but I have 79 yz125 , 79 yz250 very easy to start and yz465 it's okay but another is my 79 rm400
I had one of these back in the 80s. I didn't find it that difficult to start. No decompressor or anything. I wasn't a big guy back then probably 6' tall and only 165pounds. It was just more down to technique I think.
Oh wow, vws, dirt bikes and rc planes - some of my favorite past times! Nice YZ490 you have there. I like the classic yellow and black plastics, imo better than the white/red seen on a lot of these old 490s.
Ever thought of using Klotz 2 stroke oil...i guarantee it wont smoke like that and it has a sweet smell.the only downside to it its red colored mix..ive used bel ray mc1,maxim,yamalube,hondas 2 stroke version and a slew of others..Klotz is the best
@@danparker1976 Good to know. I’d try it, but I sold the bike a while ago. I’ll keep it in mind for other 2 stoke applications. Typically the bike only smoked like that when cold. Soon as I got it warmed up and on the track it would mostly clear up. A slight trail of smoke is always good though. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful bike. These old Yamaha's don't seem to get as much love at the Honda CR500 and Kawasaki KX500 does. I have a 1981 YZ465 that I still need to get around to working on and I just recently acquired a 1976 Yamaha IT400. The IT is rough but it is in one piece for the most part even though it's missing some stuff like they usually are. The 76 model is hard to find anything in the way of replacement tanks or seat foam. So I'm going to skip trying to make it original as it's already had the front forks and rims swapped out for ones from a YZ250. So I'm going to try doing a scrambler style bike with it. It's going to be good to accomplish the vision I have in my head of it. :)
@@CMSgarage96 The CR500 and KX500 are very rarely sold. There is currently a mint 1987 CR500 for sale on FB Market Place in Pennsylvania going for $7,900. So the prices are pretty scary when they do show up.
If you just get on eBay or Amazon and search chainsaw compression valve, a bunch will come up. They are a standard size. There is a video on RUclips, the guy explains exactly what thread tap you’ll need to use for your head. I’ll see if I can find it, I’ll post a link.
Did open class in highschool my father built my bike. The 490 seized so we took an 81 it465 engine and made a racer. My father ported cylinder stuffed balanced the crank.
NICE! I had a YZ250 Loved and miss it very much!
Thanks, and thanks for watching! Sorry about your YZ250.

Also it doesn't have an accelerator pump on the carb so twisting it without kicking it does nothing
Grest scoot! I had the 84 500r with the front disc brake and odd explosive power band.😂 Hang on to your classic!😎
Thanks! 84 500r, Cool bike!
I see you have a DG pipe! My 83 490 vibrated so much it cracked my DG pipe!
I had an 82 my pipe Crack also 490 was an animal when I had a new tire on the back it gave a 30-foot rooster tail I wiped out helmet visors
I picked up 1982 yz490 for under 700 dollars about 8 years ago but I prefer yz465 amazing bike the best yz I have ridden

Fuel on then lean bike over until she takes a leak, then get her to tdc and KICK 🤠💯🤟
My 1982 yz490 had low compression so I threw a new set of rings in, now I got a pretty good knocking type noise, ill send you a video
Send it, sounds like your crank bearing might be worn.
I have 3 of them love it

I'd redo the stock bottom with a balanced crank and 465 jug head. The 465 smoked the 490.
Is that what you did to your 490? How much did that cost you?
