I'm surprised you didn't mention how good the story is here. This is the only 8-bit game I know of where dialogue can not only play out in the middle of a space battle, but also be affected by how you're doing. And there's one big event near the end of the game that has multiple outcomes. Without spoiling too much, I've heard one commenter say that this is the only 8-bit game that made them cry, and I can see why.
I was trying to dodge spoilers on that part since it's kind of the climax of the game. At this point, games that integrate story telling into the gameplay are happening, though. You're right that Tetrastar is a good example of this change.
Ah, the sorta-sequel to Cosmic Epsilon! Just like that game, this is one impressive little title. Now some people might think "well this game uses a mapper chip to enhance the graphics, of course it looks this good!" This uses the MMC3, just like Cosmic did. The MMC3 is the same mapper that powered Super Mario Bros 3. It's games like this that truly show off what this old 1983 machine can still do as the 16-bit era marches on. While, yes, MMC5 games have some of the most colorful and detailed graphics, it's these MMC3 games that are real showcases in visual effects.
Looks and sounds incredible, massive shame about that full-screen flash. I’ll probably wind up just tinting my monitor massively orange and trying it out anyways.
Hey - I just wanted to say thanks for the photosensitivity warning on videos like this. I watched this one anyway, because I've already seen this game and I knew what to expect. But the warnings are appreciated!
Gah, it's like arcade Zero Wing where every enemy destroyed results in a full-screen flash. Unless someone comes out with a hack that removes it, that's a hard "nope" from me.
wow this one does seem very technically impressive! shoulda gave THEM the keys to space harrier or animal gakuen, hah. an easier shmup even before getting to the cheat options?! sounds like another one I should be looking for when I can start collecting famicom again.
From what I could see this one might be very first videogame with a destructible WTC (not caused by the player thankfully), which might be something still controversial even to this day. 1:48 - nice random cameo appearance by one of the not!-KKKlansman goons from Rolling Thunder, feels kinda out of place tho 2:49 - is that Polonaise Heroique what I'm hearing there?

Can't believe this even runs on an nes. Hooray for mapper chips!
It's just the MMC3, which developers have really stretched to its limits!

This game looks fun, but woof that is some bad and frequent flashing.
This is basically the most visually impressive game on the console.
How is that it that developers like Home Data die while developers like Micronics get to carry on until the mid-to-late '90s? 😅

1:45 I was not expecting robot dog to be abducted at gunpoint by the KKK
Is the robot dog a bad doggy for giving away his alien masters' plan or a good doggy for warning the humans?
He's the best doggo.

I'd go with Cosmic Epsilon.
