  • ARRAY Releasing has partnered with celebrated Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima for a 4K restoration of his groundbreaking 1993 film, SANKOFA. The critically acclaimed and rarely-seen transformative film explores the untold history of Black resistance, developed from 20 years of research into the trans-Atlantic trade of enslaved African people. Coming to Netflix on September 24!
SANKOFA follows Mona (Oyafunmike Ogunlano), a Black American fashion model on a photo shoot in Cape Coast, Ghana. Through Mr. Gerima’s imaginative storytelling, she undergoes a journey back in time to a plantation in North America. There she becomes Shola, an enslaved African woman who labors in the master’s house and experiences the horrors of slavery firsthand. In becoming Shola, Mona recovers and confronts her ancestral identity and experience. While enduring monstrous trauma at the hands of white men who owned people for profit, Shola’s interactions with her fellow enslaved Africans are rich with humanity, respect and dignity for one another. Most notably, she connects with Shango (Mutabaruka), a rebellious African man who toils in the fields, and Nunu (Alexandra Duah), one of the few of the enslaved to remember her life in Africa before being stolen and terrorized by European traders.
SANKOFA is produced by Negod Gwad Productions, in co-production with The Ghana National Commission on Culture DiProCi of Burkina Faso and NDR/WDR Television in Association with Channel 4 Television. Shirikiana Gerima is a co-producer of the film.
Initially overlooked by distributors, SANKOFA was self-distributed in the U.S. by Haile and Shirikiana Gerima’s independent distribution company through grassroots marketing within African American communities. Their innovative outreach led to over two years of sold-out screenings in theaters across the country. The film, which was conceived, produced, and directed by Haile Gerima, was an official selection of Berlin International Film Festival and AFI Film Festival in 1993. Born and raised in Ethiopia before moving to the US in 1967, Mr. Gerima’s films have been official selections of Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, Locarno, FESPACO and Toronto Film Festivals to name a few.

Sankofa a movie about Black resistance against American slavery is the kind of movies Hollywood refused to make. Like with The Spook Who Sat By the Door and Uptight along with Sankofa are the kind of movies Black American people and Black people globally needs to see for empowerment and inspiration.

I recently watched a movie that had a great story line and was really engaging, but unfortunately fell short in its representation of Ghanaian culture. Although the movie was well-made and enjoyable to watch, I couldn't help but feel disappointed by the lack of attention paid to the accuracy of the costumes and cultural elements portrayed.
It was clear that the writer had drawn inspiration from American plantation slave workers, and while this might have been a fascinating angle to explore, it did not do justice to the Ghanaian culture that the movie was meant to represent.
Despite this shortcoming, I still found the movie to be a great watch. The acting was superb, and the story line kept me hooked from start to finish. However, as someone who is interested in Ghanaian culture, it was a letdown to see the missed opportunity to showcase its unique and rich heritage.
In conclusion, while the movie was definitely worth watching, it was a missed opportunity to represent Ghanaian culture as accurately as possible. The lack of attention paid to costume design and cultural details left me wishing for a more authentic portrayal.

Devastatingly accurate. In that theatre, I relived it. Terrified, repulsed, puzzled, enraged….the gamut! Stood up triumphant, amazed that I had survived the movie and the real story, the lives of my ancestors that it depicted . Truth hurts but then it heals. Lies console but then they kill. Better to be a descendant of the enslaved maroonish than the enslaver, and if you are the unfortunate descendant of both through rape and concubinage, better to make a moral choice. Bet on Black. Great filmmaker. So grateful for his presence in that medium. The medium is the message.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but:
Sankofa is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time AND I DON"T GET TO SEE IT BECAUSE I"M IN CAPE VERDE, AFRICA!
NETFLIX can't show the movie here, even though I have an active account with them.
Yes, I'm upset! However, I wonder how many other African nations and People Of Color nations cannot show the film to their respective communities; for whatever reasons.
Come on, ARRAY; help some Black folks out! Give us an explanation. Give us some love!

Africans are generally left out in the dark when it comes to access to Black literature. It's a sad situation.

No rememberence of being Kings and Queens only the slave narrative? SANKOFA is what was left behind. In no way have we left the trauma and the stigma of slavery. Let's go back and reunite with our greatness, not our demise. We know it all too well.
