VERY interesting video, some I did not know about.
Hej Ola
Hello Tall Swede
hi
Ola, the learnerer.
yes but, can these brands all chug
Can you make a similar video about which factories in the world make which guitars and basses?
ruclips.net/video/cqV-hJeRIBc/видео.html
Javier Aldan I think he already did a while ago
Really interesting stuff, thanks for a great video Phil!
Cool new intro! Great info here and thanks for the update on the state of the industry.
Surprised you didn't mention Roland/Boss/Rodgers, but tons of great info here
Glad you did a follow-up on this topic!
Thanks Phil! I love knowing this stuff. I just don't know enough past some of the big distributors to track down the information you provided here. I appreciate the fact that you use your extended knowledge in a music business sense and most of all, YOUR TIME, to put videos out like you do. Keep it up!! You have my gratitude.
I really like when you provide these updates. It is very interesting to see where products evolve.
Interesting video! Thank you for taking the time to put this content together, film it, and post it.
You've come a long way in production and delivery in these videos from the first time around, Phil. Thanks for everything man glad to have followed your channel for almost 3 years now....goddamn where has the time gone haha
You may notice Long and Mcquade on one of the story boards but I do not talk about them. The logo was put there on mistake and was supposed to be on another board. I didn't notice it on there until it was uploaded. I have blurred it to fix the issue. Should be updated soon
I'd still like to hear what you have to say about Long and McQuade, our Canadian version of Sam Ash, Guitar Center, and Sweetwater all rolled in to one.
@@jsewellgplus Long and McQuade. Great Return policy, including "no lemons". I laugh when people sell gear they just bought. At L&M, just return it.
I've extended the warranty on a used Ibanez Prestige for 6 years, for $17 and get a Free Setup once a year. Twice a string change made the bridge tremolo system go out of whack. Bring it in, get it back playing perfect in a day or two
In Canada we have Long and Mcquade and Tom Lee as the two big chains country wide. L and M has yorkville sound and Traynor.
@@HeviNova I know in Alberta, they have Axe Music which has pretty decent prices. Tom Lee however, I think is only in BC. L&M basically swallowed up a lot of the independant guitar shops around, so unless you want to go to a pawn shop, they're more or less the only game in town.
I think an outside look at Long and McQuade would be interesting. The Long family still owns L&M and, unlike US retailers, owns their largest distributor Yorkville - Yorkville is like Canadian Peavey. They own a bunch of offshore brands like ART Electronics, Apex Microphones AND they manufacture stuff in Canada like Traynor amps. They also make all the speaker equipment for IMAX theatres worldwide. They distribute about 1/3 of everything that L&M sells (Gibson, Hughes and Kettner, Universal Audio, Line 6, KRK)... Anti-trust laws would prevent a relationship like this in the USA but in Canada it’s all fair game.
Love that intro graphic! This is a cool video Phil, thank you for your time sir!!
Thank You Phil! I love knowing how this all goes together! The Biggest shocker? Yahmaha owning Line 6 and Ampeg! WOW! I can't wait to see where that all goes!
Great info Phill, thank you for this and your Time making it, Cheers
Thanks for doin un updated version, miss the dry erase board a little....haha great job!
Very interesting and informative video. Thanks for the update on brand ownership and relationships. It has been a while since that last video like this.
Very interesting video. I've seen all your material and I definitely like and appreciate the the time and effort you put in each video.
Nice video. Fills a gap in knowledge that those of us who do not follow the trade papers wouldn't have known about. Concise, clear, unbiased. Thanks.
This type of video is what hot me hooked on your videos. Thanks for more great content.
I worked for Musicians Friend/ Guitar Center here in Indianapolis. Both brands are operated in the same call centers. With MF we would take calls from woodwind brass wind and Music 123. Every once and awhile you would get the same person on the phone while answering calls for each brand.
Lovely video Phil, as always! I would love to see one about the guitar factorys and their differences between and inside brands, for example: Fender Corona, Fender Ensenada, Gibson Nashville, Gibson Memphis, ESP Japan, ESP USA, Fuji-gen Japan, WMIC, etc.
I’m pretty certain the first version of this video with the whiteboard, was the first video of yours I saw. Thank you for your time.
Thanks your videos are so informative great job I’m 62 years old and just started playing guitar and I learn a lot about gear to make informed decisions on what to buy thanks again
Such a great video.
Thank you Rick, by the way I love your channel
some others that i think are interesting. Schecter owns "Daisy Rock girl guitars". Dean, Luna guitars (and those popular "tattoo" ukuleles) and DDrum are all owned by the same company Armadillo Enterprises. and ESP does the distribution for Takamine in north America. It's cool to see how everything gets connected.
This was really informative and awesome! You should do a video talking about different factories, country origins, etc. For example, World Music Corp in Korea makes some really cool guitars for many brands
Ah! You missed Cordoba Music Group: Cordoba, Guild, Dearmond, Savarez, Aquila
Also Guitar center shares product stock between GC/MF, Look up listed serials between sittes. also I think they own Woodwind and brass and someother site too.
If you do one of those again, I'd like to know what is all connected to Thomann and who is building for them.
Nice new intro Phil! Great info as well!
Love these videos! Keep up the good work, Phil!
Awsome! Thanks Phil! The first "who owns who" made me subscribe about two years ago! Now we expect second "who makes who"! :)
Long and Maquade has been a big help for me acquiring gear, with affordable financing. I really appreciate their help. Cool video, Phil! Rock on, brother!
First time on the channel. Bloody well pleased this came up in my feed!
Solid presentation of a topic we all have chatted about. Unlike those chats, this cat isn't talking out of his arse.
Thank you for the info!!

Thanks for the update Phil!😎👍
Thanks Phil. It's changed a little since the one you did a couple of years ago. This time you included a fair bit more though. Great stuff.
Informative. Thanks for reasoned and nuanced analysis.
I love this kind of stuff. Great job, Phil. How about another video on Who Makes Who? Ya know?
EXCELLENT work Sir!
Great video Phil!! I thought I knew all this but you threw in a couple surprises!! I thought I knew my gear but now know my gear...better?? Cheers!!
AWESOME VID! You forgot about Cort, they build for Ibanez, G&L, Fender and maybe some other companies. Interesting vid!
I love this. I remember the previous video and have been wondering if any changes had happened since.
Always great videos
Good info. Much appreciated. Peace :)
P.S.~ A number of years ago, I worked in a rather large audio manufacturing concern, that was primarily known for their high end car audio gear and speakers, but we also made stuff sometimes for Carver, Bose, Fender, among others. It's a pretty common thing.
Great info and video. Thanks for making it :)
Great info Phil!!!
Thanks Phil, great update!
Good stuff! Thanks for the insights
In addition to the brand's you already mentioned ESP also have Navigator and Grassroots guitar brands. They also distribute Takamine and ENGL amps.
Great stuff. Thanks Phil. Nobody does better on this topic. Well done.
This built on the original and is awesome🙂Great job liked👍
Love these type of videos from you!!!
The consumer products business side of our industry is fascinating! Thanks for this video.
I seen the other videos Phil done about who owns who and these are very interesting! Thanks Phil!
I was already here the first time you made this video, years ago :)
And absolutely nothing has changed since then right? Got it, good to know we are living in stasis.
@@yargnad I guess what's living in a stasis are your few neurons, buddy. the guy just wanted to say he's a long time follower, not that this video is useless or something like that only a dumb dumb dumb could think...
@David RF
I know !
Right ?!?
It's pretty clear he is just saying he is a long time subscriber of Phil's. What's wrong with you, people?
@@BueGrassum I thought it was pretty clear but people can be very weird...
awesome video ty phill
The "Musician's Friend and Guitar Center are kept separate" doesn't seem to be as much of a thing 2 years later. I just bought a Squier Strat used through MF and the post made if very clear it was in the used section at a Guitar Center.
My fav Guitar Company Ovation Guitars is currently owned by Drum Workshop. And formerly owned by Fender.
Very good information. Thanks Phillip
Interesting video,I had no idea about any. Besides fender and squier of course. But wondered of vox and korg.
I'm surprised that Music and Arts is owned by Guitar Center. The Guitar Center in my town went out of business and was replaced by a Music and Arts which is really weird if they're the same company.
If sales for a usual guitar center were low at your location they could have closed and moved it and replaced it with a smaller yet still profitable store without anyone being the wiser. Just my thought
@@robertmac4912 I don't think that's it since The Music and Arts is in the same building and takes up the same space unless you don't mean a physically smaller store.
I personally have never laid my eyes on the store you mentioned so that was something I was in aware of.. but maybe financially M&A is a safer choice than a GC maybe it costs less to up keep in the long run? Maybe M&A order less instruments because of the area I have no clue. Speculation is hell of a drug. Last week Aliens stole my turkey bacon out of my fridge but then again it could've been my room mate :/ ill never know
I believe M&A does franchising, so someone could have opened up a store independently of the corporation themselves. Just taking a guess.
I don’t really know either company - but it reminds me of something that happened where I am (Durham, NC) recently: Kroger (the grocery chain) closed all their Triangle (Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill) stores about a year ago. Something like 15 stores, all closed. However, most of them are soon to reopen as Harris Teeter stores (which are also owned by Kroger). See, this area has been steadily gentrifying over the last two decades: Kroger is more profitable in less affluent places (it’s cheaper, but also not quite so ‘nice’), while HT is more profitable in more affluent areas where people can afford to pay more to shop in a physically nicer store. The Krogers weren’t doing bad business, but the company figured that in the long run it’ll be better to have more of the upmarket stores, and abandon the gradually-shrinking downmarket business in this area.
Could be something similar? It sounds like Music and Arts is upmarket of GC, so maybe they just thought they could get away with the more expensive store and make more money?
Videos like this are really interesting. Not so much an "I've got to have this", but how business works!
Still one of the best videos anyone has done on this subject!
We made a list! Woooop!
AWESOME!
I think you missed an important recent one for bass players - Korg now own Spector. It will be interesting to see how they develop it.
Phils wall street moment ...great in depth info ...cool
Hey Phil,
Another great video and good education for me 😁.
I ordered an Ibanez axion label from musicians friend they proxied out to guitar center. But what was weird is that the packing label said musicians friend but the actual shipping label said guitar center.
Very informative. Thanx Phil.
Great info and pretty sure Morgan is also included with Boutique Amps as well. Still pissed about Fender and Tacoma too. I had a few of them through the years and they made great solid wood guitars in the USA for really good prices. Hamer was another too and I know they're "back" now but just not the same as the USA built days.
I was wondering who owned Washburn, I've owned many guitars over the last 35 years or so, some of them expensive and really nice, some cheap and really nice. I recently grabbed a used Washburn J3 for £200 in mint condition. What an absolutely splendid guitar, the tone, craftsmanship and finish are absolutely top notch , what a beautiful guitar. I shall be looking out for Washburn in the future they are absolutely serious.
Great follow up video!
Sweet video. Thanks for the info.
Really nice info as always bro..
I really did not have the time to investigate why on earth anyone would give a thumbs down
Great information
Looking at some now that other wise wouldn't have!
TFS
I was just wondering how many guitars do you have? Thanks for the good information about the big boy companies I enjoy the content in your videos.
I was hoping you were gonna do a new updated version :0) thanks !
Amazing video Phil it helped me see connections in my collection as well what about dean? Who works or owns them?
You are outstanding Phil McKnight
Hey Phil! I really enjoy those videos. But I'm curious as to why you put Long&Mcquade on the board along Jam Industries? As far as I know (and I work for them), the company is independantly run, although it does own HHB Canada, Yorkville Sound and a few other brands/manufacturers/etc. Keep it up!
Very interesting video.
Out of curiosity, I wonder if you could make a new updated one about which asian factories build import line of high end brands (like Sterling by Music Man, PRS and so on)
Interesting. It’s cool to know who makes what. Thanks Phil!!!
New follower, and subscriber to the channel. Question: Have you done a video for replacing the tremolo block on a squier strat? If not- I would like to see that
Hey Phillip ! As you mentioned, it happens all the time. I've been in the recording/electronics industries in the late '70s and have seen lots of changes since then. Sometimes for the good, sometimes for the not so good... As long as the business aspect does not kill the soul and the core spirit of a brand, it's ok. I would hate to see great brands we know and love being chopped down and their quality sacrified to productivity as we sadly see it happen too frequently. Cheers !
Nice update Phil! You de man!
Excellent stuff!
(heard brands I 've forgotten about eg. Parker)
As always impressive journalism Phillip. Keep em coming! I love getting soaked in the dirty inner workings behind the music instrument industry. What do you know about BOSS/Roland?
Had a Raven 60 watt combo forever before I upgrded to my 5150 50 watt half stack. That Raven was a great solid state amp
Some I knew, many I didn't. Well done. Also spot-on with the comments that it has always been this way. Today there is more gear on offer, of higher quality, at lower prices in real terms, than ever before. Thank the creative destruction of firms changing and growing.
Thanks?!?!?! I'm clearer on some issues and not so much in others. A lot of info to absorb. Thanks Phil!! Have a great day!
Excellent! Thanks.
Hey Phil I remember you did a video on brands not with us that are great buys well I have one for you that I don't think you know, I picked up this Startocaster copy in my local pond shop for approx £24 it the body was solid Alder with hard maple neck and two rollers the pups where ssh , it looked like a quality guitar so I did as much research as I could but I contacted Mayones and they confirm it was made by them for the Polish Market only, it's Mayones Flamebell Stratocaster, have you ever heard of these guitars in your travels ?
00:00
Wow, Phil !
Interesting Topic Today !
Say, Didn't AC/DC write a song similar to the Title of this video ?!?
Anyway, you are in Maximum Overdrive today, with the Reprise !
I can't wait to watch it, (again ?!?) !
09:50
Well, I liked the Original One, with its use of the Chalkboard, but, I also like the Product Stickers used in this one, soooo, ...
Anyway, I appreciate the updates !
Great Video, Phil !
Thanks, For All That You Do !
Nice video. It reminded me of being told that there were only 3 manufacturers plants (years ago at least) that made guitar strings for ALL of the sting companies...is that true?
Wow interesting video. Enjoyed it
Would you be able to try out any of the new Abasi guitars? I really want to buy one, but want to see what you think.
Good stuff Phil 👍
have you any links to more extensive examples? I wish this video were longer! :)
Great Idea
Phil can you do a video about the changes that Park amps seem to have undergone. I had a park amp in the 90’s, wasn’t it Marshall’s practice amp brand then? Now I see one in Tim Pierces home studio, I google it and apparently now they are super-high end stuff! Am I getting this right? Would love to hear what you know.
Lots of stuff I didn't know there. Thanks.
