  • As some of you might be aware, there has been calling for a chart plotter to be installed on Oyster to help act locate the position of Oyster in relation to the channel, and other local navigation marks.
After much consideration, it was decided that we would purchase a portable tablet computer with Marine Navigator chart plotter software, (and charts) installed.
This option was substantially less expensive (£200) in comparison to purchasing an installed Garmin unit from Mylor Chandlery.
The tablet comes from a company called London Chart Plotters, and is designed for navigating from onboard a vessel. It’s a water resistant 5ATM unit, in a heavy-duty shockproof case, with a tough screen cover installed. It’s powered using a normal Samsung charger cable, plugged into one of the DC sockets below the steering console. When the tablet is not in use, please keep it kept in the yellow lockbox on the chart desk on Oyster, (along with the charger). There is also a spare DC charger kept in the lockbox in case one gets lost or damaged.
To turn on the tablet, hold down the long button on the top right-hand-side for a few seconds and you’ll see it come to life. Give it 10 seconds to boot up, and you’ll see the usual smartphone welcome screen. Press the centre bottom at the bottom of the screen to unlock, or swipe the screen. The is no password.
Once the tablet is unlocked you will see three apps in the top left of the screen:
    1. AnchorLite. Which is an app that tells you if you are drifting whilst at anchor. Handy!
    2. GPS Test. In case you suspect that you are not getting a GPS lock, this will confirm it. However, you get good GPS reception on Oyster.
    3. Marine Navigator. This is the main piece of software you will be using.
In this video you will see me demonstrating how to use Marine Navigator. It’s extremely easy to use!

I hope you find this a useful addition to Oyster.
