Note that these guys were all in their EARLY 20s at the time of that concert! Terry Kath was SELF TAUGHT on guitar, the others attended music classes in college. Terry impressed Jimi Hendrix and Danny Seraphine impressed Buddy Rich. Both Jimi and Buddy were considered as the authorities on their crafts, so you KNOW Chicago had great talent!

Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will make you want an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor! ruclips.net/video/j8aJiLUaWGI/видео.html
When they were "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He approached their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs AND A GUITAR PLAYER THAT'S BETTER THAN ME! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour.
    "POEM 58" - PLEASE!

Such a beautiful song ❤ This song reminds me of a former love, many years ago, it was our song.
For another band from that era with a hit that also utilized lots of horns, check out One Fine Morning by Lighthouse. That song has a lot more jazz in it than Chicago. Also, Howard Shore (the prolific composer) was a member, as was Skip Prokop, whose impromptu drum lesson changed a very young Gil Moore's (drummer for Triumph) life.

The last time I saw Chicago (around 2003-2004), they were the headliner for Huey Lewis and the News and Earth, Wind, and Fire. That was an amazing concert, although the mid-July temperatures at an outdoor venue was the opposite. James Pankow (trombone) has always been one of my favorites-the man exuded sex appeal! We did 25 or 6 to 4 for marching band. It was cool to play something current!

There's so much talent in this band! They've always been one of my all-time favorite bands. I've done several covers from them, including this song. Their versatility and originality are almost unmatched! One of the most amazing things about this group is that their first 5 albums were double albums! Their first album was recorded in just a week! To record a double album as a debut is amazing in and of itself, but to record it and mix it in less than 2 weeks is phenomenal! They recorded it in 5 days, and then had it mixed in 5 days! You should check out the musicianship in their song called Free! It will blow your mind!

The studio version is absolutely worth checking out--cleaner production/sound, and (if it's the longer, album version rather than the radio version) a great percussion 'jam session' at the end. That said, this was a fun, jazzy take on the song.

Chicago was the first concert I ever went to. It was 1973 at MTSU. It costs me $3 to get it. But, to get the full appreciation of Chicago, you really need to listen to the studio version. It's how they meant it to sound. Of course, they edit it and mix it and stuff, but it sounds much much better. No, they really messed up when they started "vamping." I think it sounds awful.
And if you want to hear Chicago get wild with the horns, listen to Chicago III and a song called Free.
Chicago was really Kath's band. When he died, they lost their rawness and went strictly commercial.

I know you don't like cowbells, shakers, tambos, more cowbells and some funky, gnarly drum playing. You also don't like when a band has three lead singers and they use them all in one song. I don't think you like salsa dancing either, Steven. So you def should stay away from the song, I'm A Man, from this same show. It's the closer too, so I know you wouldn't like an extended jam session centered around Danny on the drums. You wouldn't like it.
    ....I wonder if it'll work....🤔🤔
