The melody of this song is from a 17th century Scottish ballad about tragic young lovers. It crossed the Atlantic with the Scots-Irish immigrants who settled much of Appalachia and the south, bringing their instruments and music. The lyrics changed to reflect the hard times they suffered and the homesickness they felt, since they usually never saw their families back across the pond ever again in this life. It's one of my favorites, too, timeless and so achingly beautiful.
You’re correct, and thank you for taking the time to inform those reading the comment section. I cannot believe how much hogwash there is spread across the Internet about the origins of this song. It is Not a Civil War era song, but was written down and published in the mid-to-late 1700s. The Civil War was about 100 years later! The melody is absolutely Nothing like the style of American Indians’ historically traditional music. To claim the melody was lifted from an "American Indian melody” is just ludicrous. It is also Nothing like “Negro spirituals.” It is not like Portuguese music either. Instead, the melody is very distinct with the mournful, wailing tone and rhythm of the Scots-Irish Appalachian mountain-people. The traditional singing of the Scots-Irish pioneers in this country was, not surprisingly, strikingly similar to the ancient/historical singing of Scotland’s people. For those who sing in the historically traditional style it still is. Why do people not use common sense and search for accuracy before spreading misinformation far and wide?
My Farther was a Bass/Baritone and once a great Opera Singer that stopped to use his God Given Gift to sing for God and was the best Minister of music you ever heard sing and his mom played piano for church almost her whole life and being raised in the South my dad loved the black spirituals most of all. And even as a child I loved this song the most out of all the songs he sang and I can't listen to it without crying because it has God's promises to us that we would be with our families again and I know my parents will meet me when I cross over the Jordan. I don't much but I know God keeps all of His promises.
When a songstress finishes her first three notes you know whether she has you hooked or not. No way I wasn't listening to this till the very last note. Awesome. Thank you.
More PURE talent in this room than you will find on the combined roster of any big record label.. Kudos to whoever decided to record this!!.... Simply AMAZING
THIS IS EXCITINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!! THE SONG IS TIMELESS ,NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF ITS MESSAGE BUT ALSO, IN NO SMALL PART, DUE TO THE MANY GREAT AND TALENTED ARTISTE....PRESENT COMPANY INCLUDED...WHO HAVE KEPT IT ALIVE!!!V.W.
What a GORGEOUS, soulful expression of this song! LOVE the fiddle part too! Want to hear more later from the fiddler and the whole group. This song is among my top 4-5 favorites. Went through a phase of ? # of weeks trying to sing this song myself with the right recorded instrumental backup, but alone. Sang and played violin ('fiddle' too!) in groups for most of my 72 years. You've reawakened a tremendous longing in these alone times of pandemic to do these things again! With social distancing limits in church and no music ensembles, the best I do outside of the house is sing in my pew with a mask! " The Sweet Bye and Bye" (with great recorded bluegrass accompaniment) might be my absolute favorite right now, probably because it's the one I sing the best, and I love it! I'll be back to hear more!
Lyrics ; I'm a poor wayfaring stranger While traveling thru this world of woe Yet there's no sickness, toil, or danger In that bright world to which I go I'm going there to see my Father I'm going there no more to roam I'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home I know dark clouds will hang 'round me, I know my way is rough and steep Yet beauteous fields lie just before me Where God's redeemed their vigils keep I'm going there to see my mother She said she'd meet me when I come I'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home
Thank You!! damn I knew I heard her voice but couldn't place where!..... The Trishas!!!! yes that's it! it was driving me nuts :) I loved the Trishas too
Hebrews 11:13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
if he exists he isnt your god mate, he has already done all your scripture math and he still hates you/us. is he smarter then you? then why are you trying to make sense of it? the only beautiful part of this is the music not faith. Faith is just the front page of the shitty excuse people use to hurt each other
@@DanielPena-nv2nj As a result of your comment and the reply to it, I also listened to the Isaacs version. Since I am entitled to my opinion, I agree with your "best rendition EVER" comment. Isaacs, overarranged /overproduced but still good, Jamie Wilson and loving friends who sang with her; pure heart, pure love, pure talent, absolutely genuine !!!!!!!!!! If you Feel what you have stated then you owe it to yourself to listen to this little girl sing it. ruclips.net/video/QGjQBXSMGZs/видео.html. EmmyLou is as good or better than any also ....... is it just me, or is it crazy obvious that the blonde is looking at Jamie with so much love in her eyes. she almost cant stop looking her up and down and just gazing at her the whole time. if thats not the look of someone being in love, then idk what is.
Excellent job...It's my favorite too and I have done it fast and slow when I perform...You hit just the right tempo. It really conveys the mood of the song. Thanks, headed to a memorial service now with this hopeful song on my mind and the hope of Christ in my heart.
Wonderful . It makes me glad to find such sentiments , Voices & Peace in the way you folks share your Talent in the Sight of the Lord. The Corvid-19 virus has given us the time to be your audience as we self isolate. Praise be to God for that search .
I would love to meet all of them in person and just sit around on a back porch by a fire pit, talk music and play a while (though they're alot more talented than me with a guitar, I would be honored to sing with them) :)

Lyrics ;
I'm a poor wayfaring stranger
While traveling thru this world of woe
Yet there's no sickness, toil, or danger
In that bright world to which I go
I'm going there to see my Father
I'm going there no more to roam
I'm only going over Jordan
I'm only going over home
I know dark clouds will hang 'round me,
I know my way is rough and steep
Yet beauteous fields lie just before me
Where God's redeemed their vigils keep
I'm going there to see my mother
She said she'd meet me when I come
I'm only going over Jordan
I'm only going over home
