Hey Jamie, thanks the for this upload about thunder blade! Awesome stuff. I played this in the arcade at the age of 9 and my mind was blown and so was my coinage. I bought it immediately for my C64 and played it to death. Can’t remember if I thought it was cack or not but I just loved the game. Still play it today but on emulation. Great ranking.
Remember playing the sit down arcade version, swayed back and forth opposite of where you moved the controller. Good old days at Alladins Castle at the mall.
I remember the C64 version of Thunder Blade was actually really good. I was really surprised at the time. One of the few actually really good arcade conversions on the 64.
Chris Butler converted Thunder Blade for the C64 and he was one of the machine's most talented coders. It's clearly had a bit more TLC compared to the other micro conversions. I should really get the 3DS version, thanks for reminding me!
JustJamie1983 Another Video where I did indeed own a version and it was the Amstrad! Like you, I was never very good at the arcade version, but I could at least reach the first 3rd person stage... NOT ON THE AMSTRAD! But, I have to be honest, it was so slow... I quickly dropped it anyway and went to playing GAUNTLET which became my go to game for years!
I had this on my Spectrum, I don’t think I ever got through the first level. After watching this video I might go and load it up to see if the adult me can get any further
@JustJamie1983 I have the Commodore 64, SMS and PC Engine versions and all are playable to me. I was surprised with the C64 version being as good as it was for 8 bit. My favorite out of the 3 is the PC engine version. It replicates the arcade the closest out of the 3. So many tried to make super scaler games on such inferior hardware Some are pretty bad or don't even resemble the arcade. There was such a gap between home consoles and arcade machines back then as far as capability.
The Amiga version is the only game I ever tried to get a refund on, it was that frustrating. Unfortunately most stores had cottoned on to the fact people were buying games, copying and returning them, so they had a no refund policy.
I remember this from back in the day. The Amiga version (the version I had) looked okay, although it could have used some polishing. BUT the controls and difficulty level - did they even bother to play test it! Saying that, I remember the arcade original wasn't exactly easy either.
As I recall, the Amiga versi9on offered two control methods, one where the joystick also controlled the speed, which made the game unplayable, and one where you controlled the speed with the keyboard. While I was initially impressed with the graphics on that version, after seeing the C64 pull off the detailed layers like the arcade, the Amiga version was just lazy.
Was a huge fan of the arcade game. Think I already mentioned this but me and a mate decided one of us would get this and the other would get Afterburner for the speccy and I wound up with this. It got some decent reviews at the time but while it was an impressive achievement technically I was not a fan of how it played personally
Saw a tweet from Julian "Jaz" Rignal talking about how it's been 35 years since the successful launch of Rainbow Islands across the micros of the days. That's a game worth doing a compare on. The speccy version will surprise everyone.
saw this in the arcades.. was blown away.. read in mags it was coming to Amiga.. was blown away by screenshots in mags.. bought a copy.. looked amazing.. but like you couldnt tell what the hell was going on and gave up soon after, was just horrible to play.
Great arcade game with stunning graphics The home micro ports all done by tiertex and actually for them pretty good efforts Played the amiga version and had no issues with controls, guessing u on emulater Master system version for the hardware was impressive
loved this in the arcade as a kid. the local fair always had a delux cabinet but i could never get past the railshooting part of the desert. Had the C64 version and beat that though. Was it actually based on Blue Thunder though? Thought that was just an urban myth
Nice list and glad to see the PC engine taking 2nd placement here I never had it as it was a Japan only release but man NEC what were you thinking not bringing some of the good stuff to the US. Ugh such a sore topic with me I swear they must have thought the US was a disposal bin that paid money for trash or something because there are some real doozies in the library released here. Games like Gunboat, Falcon, Impossamole, JJ & Jeff, Tail Spin, Darkwing Duck, Moto Roader, Deep Blue, Andre Panza Kickboxing (or any sports game for that matter). Those games scared off potential gamers and tarnished the system's reputation beyond saving. I get every console has snoozer (bad) games but the TG-16 US library had a greater proportion of mediocre to bad games than its competitors. *Speaking from a US only perspective*
Loved this on the Mega Drive. Coming from the Amstrad where I completed very few games due to the difficulty of games on 8-bit computers to completing Altered Beast and then this, I thought my gaming skills were improving. Really though, games were easier on consoles.
You missed the Megadrive/Genesis version! It is known as Super Thunderblade though and considered a sequel. I don’t know where you got that C64 version of Thunderblade but it isn’t what was released in the UK & Europe. The version we got on C64 doesn’t have a green background. First stage is grey background and the chopper is blue like the arcade. It is also done by Tiertex. Edit : Just looking about and see that you got the U.S version from Gamebase 64 which is done by Mindscape and isn’t as good as the UK version. If you are doing Bionic Commando there is also a UK version and a terrible U.S version
Yes. Two versions of Bionic Commando. I am old school C64 and have a fairly good knowledge. Not sure how Thunder Blade slipped me by though to be honest. Have you seen my C64 videos? I have covered pretty much everything from modern hardware - new games. I have even done some videos of my times of publishing.
@@JustJamie1983 No I haven’t yet with the C64 vids. Catching up on the comparison vids lately. Something you may have noticed is the lack of Atari 8-bit conversions in these lists. That was a problem that Atari computer users had to deal with throughout the life of the machines. If Atari themselves didn't have the rights to a conversion, it didn't get done for the platform.
I remember trying to play the Megadrive Super Thunder Blade... I was never a fan of super-scaler ports, no machine before maybe the Saturn/PS1 era had enough grunt to do a decent job of smooth scaling, so you end up with that kind of wobbly and choppy fake scaling that almost always looks dreadful. I'd pay good money for an official super-scaler arcade machine/console that did all of them close to 100% with decent controls and configuration options.
The C64 version was very playable, but Thunderblade was never really a game that appealed to me. I remember seeing it in the arcade not long after having it on the C64 and felt underwhelmed. I don't know if it was because it was too hard or what.

Take care because the Amiga games you are running, probably from WHDload on faster CPU configuration, so, the games runs faster and some become unplayable. I suggest you run the game on Amiga 500 standard configuration, from emulated floppy for more real experience.
Do kind of think it's unfair to include the x68000 as virtually no one in the UK had one at the time (I'd not heard of it until the late 00s!) Whereas stuff like the PC engine was relatively common!
