This was the first Inland Border Patrol Checkpoint I ever went through in February 1982 and when I asked my mom about it afterward she said "Oh yeah, you've got to tell them you're a U.S. Citizen and not an American." The Agent's shelter looked stark in those days. At that time we could cross back from Juárez, Mexico doing little more than saying "I'm a U.S. Citizen".

You could be crossing since George Washington was president( who knows if they had inspections back then) it wouldn’t change anything. You’re still subject to the law no matter what you do. Now, Sometimes it’s justifies to remain silent and question them when you know you can prove them wrong.
