As a doctor promoting LCHPMF and Intermittent Fasting I often encourage patients to have 1 square of dark chocolate to satisfy that sweet craving after dinner. If you take the 1 square and break it into 4 pieces, you now have 4 chocolate bites, but only at ~4 carbs and you satify the cravings. To make the comparison fair you had to have 3 squares. What a great idea to check meals and snacks this way. I'm curious to try some of my favorites. One year our family was on a very low budget and we would have meals of popcorn (cheap), apples (from our own trees), and cheese (WIC help). It's actually still one of our family favorites 20 years later, and I'm in a financial place now that I could check this out to see how those things all balance out together. I appreciate Levels way of letting people do what is affordable.
I would love for you to do one of these with the chocolates made with erythritol or allulose or something like that. This was very enlightening. I knew the popcorn was going to spike your blood sugar. Thanks for doing this.
Please, consider using the traditional finger prick glucose monitor. I get 100 strips for $20 in my local pharmacy and I test my blood glucose several times a day. It really helps to not stray too far from a healthy diet (before I would just start slowly increasing portions and carbs but the glucose monitor keeps me on track)
Thank you so much for these tests and all the videos. I really enjoy your calm, no nonsense, honest way of delivering information. I have been eating ketogenically for 2 months and have seen a steady & struggle-free weight loss. I wore a CGM monitor in the beginning two weeks and noticed that I had nocturnal (non-diabetic) hypoglycemia, which surely contributed to me not sleeping very well. After just 4 days of following the diet, it completely went away. Since then, my blood sugar was in a healthy range 100% of the time. Seeing this motivates me to stay on track and I would encourage people to try wearing one at least for a while.
Great video. I am a diabetic, so I check my sugar at least 2 or more times a day. My go to snack is a hard boiled egg. I have learned to read the labels on any packaged snacks I buy. There is so much out there that we are buying and thinking they are a pretty healthy snack. I want to thank you for making us aware of what is best for us to reach our healthy goals.
I make popcorn but I never eat more than a cup at a time and never a second cup on the same day. I manage this by "processing" the popcorn when it's popped into two cup bowls with tops. I almost measure the 1 cup out when I pull the first cup out of the storage bowl. I do not get a higher spike than pecans or almonds because I keep it to one cup. I usually use everything spice and a pat of melted butter. One cup does not add any weight (I weigh myself every morning). I find the fiber is important, and 1 cup is a slow rise for my sugar. (I text with a normal tester 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 90 minutes later). So popcorn gets a bad rap because people don't pay attention to how to incorporate it into your diet.
I have to add...to contrast...that just because your body processes carbs one way does NOT mean that everyone processes carbs the same way. Your spike is not everyone's spike. I don't actually have a "horse in this race". My A1C was 4.1 in September, and the lowest it can be is 4.0...but I do know that I process carbs differently, even depending on the specific day or week.
Thank you for saying this. I never eat more than one cup of popcorn and only eat it once in awhile. I cannot imagine eating that much popcorn as a snack & I've never seen that amount as a recommended serving size. It seems unfair to poor popcorn 🍿🥰 Life is too short to eliminate fun snacks. Just need to be mindful of portions. Moderation really is the key to everything.
@@joannathesinger770 Congratulations on that A1C! That's stellar. That's my goal. Right now I'm 5.4, but I have about 40 pounds I want to lose over the next year and I'm finding the way my body is processing carbs is changing. It's always interesting when you're Type 2.
Thank you for doing a video on this. This really helps me understand how food causes a change to blood sugar. This video has helped me understand it better.
Wow, what an interesting and informative video. Thanks for eating all that popcorn, and the chocolate, first thing in the morning. If you are up for it, more comparisons of different so called health snacks would be appreciated.
So, cool you did this, and thank you. I have had a love of gorging on popcorn forever. I cut it out, but then added it back in, non GMO, organic, etc....but had to cut it out again, and now know why! I have a huge food addiction reaction after indulging that can last 2-4 DAYS. From your comparisons I understand why. My body really likes low carb, decent fat and protein levels with tons of greens and low carb veggies! Great experiment.
Thank you for your time filming this. Will reevaluate the bowl of popcorn. In terms of healthy fats - wouldn’t testing that popcorn with some olive oil dribble on it been preferable? I keep a jar of olive oil mixed with nutritional yeast, roasted sesame seeds and a small amount of salt as a popcorn topping which tasted good. Also Japanese Furikake is a good seasoning Would love to see future videos testing snacks - carrot sticks/rice cakes/potato chips etc thanks!
This has been a fantastic exercise thank you Dr. Becky! I would like to see it go further, for example~ comparing different nuts and different raw vegetables. Sometimes you just need a little snack and I’d love to feel very confident the snack choice I was making wasn’t going to spike my blood sugar significantly. 🙏🏻
Having worn a CGM for a while now, I had already correctly guessed the answer to the question posed and in the order your results provided. It was a good test for those who do not wear a CGM or are new to the diabetic condition. Short sweet and made clear as to the carb to fiber ratio. Excellent.
This is very interesting and good reminder for me. I'm throwing away the popcorn and going to stop justifying it as a good snack because it has fiber. Thanks again Dr. Becky!
I agree popcorn is such a favorite for most people but not good for us, it gives me too much gas, that's the reason that I stopped eating it altogether, but now there's other health reasons to stop consuming popcorn.... oh well
You are spot on about how food affects different people differently. It even affects the same person differently. Before I went keto/IF my blood sugar spiked higher and longer on the same exact food.
Thats easy, kimchi & olives are very low in carbs + high fiber. Kimchi you can easily make yourself. Plain yogurt has carbs and absorbs quickly but ok in small amounts bc of fat. Fruited is Terrible
What a great video! Thank you! I have tried to not snack at all, but I notice when I intermittent fast (16:8), I do get very hungry in the late afternoon. Almonds are my go-to.
Thanks for the video! My favorite snack IS popcorn (with butter). Frankly I was not shocked by the results of your testing. I rarely snack; but when I do, it’s buttered popcorn! This is how I justify its healthful effect on me: 1. So pleasurable & satisfying. 2. Does not give me cravings for other “bad” choices. 3. It’s a very infrequent small indulgence. Small in regards to portion, as well as it does not end my world, so to speak. This video has given me that internal nudge to purchase a CGM & membership with Levels. My first test will be a Diet Pepsi or Coke Zero. These two are my kryptonite. 😢
I eat a solid piece of virgin coconut oil out of the fridge when I have a craving for a small snack. It is satiating, tastes good and gives a near instantaneous boost in ketones.
I understand the reasons for testing this type of dark chocolate but I would really like to have seen 90 or 95 percent cacao because these are what I have on the rare occasions I eat chocolate. Great video, Becky.
A good future experiment for popcorn would be to try a much smaller amount. How does 2 cups of popcorn--a much more reasonable amount spike glucose? I don't think you said how the popcorn was prepared. Microwave? Air popper? Stove top? What happens if you pop it yourself on the stove using a tbsp. of olive oil. More popcorn data, please!
Didn't expect the Popcorn being so hard on glucose. I never use an air popper but use a little oil in a pot. I also only have about 1/3 the portion, or about 75-80 calories, from what you had in this video. Having some walnuts and small portion of popcorn isn't too bad.
We don‘t sit down and snack on an amount of butter - Well, that‘s exactly what i‘m doing. Not a whole tablespoon, but about 5 to 10 grams a couple of times in a day. It keeps me satiated and energized, and it tastes hmmmmm… No more sugar cravings, and it don‘t blew me out of the ketosis state.
Thank you for the info on that glucose gadget. I have heard of them and you are first to show how to get them if not diabetic. But yeah ouch the cost! Seems so unfair. That is a chunk to work into a budget .
If budget is an issue, please consider just getting a finger prick glucose monitor. But the one that has cheap test strips. I buy 100 strips for $20 and test my glucose several times a day before a meal and at 1hr and 2 hrs after a meal. It helped me to eliminate supposedly healthy stuff that spiked my glucose a lot
Great tests. I gradually lost 92 pounds in 18 months by doing calorie restriction. I learned to stop adding sweeteners to food and to eat a low sugar diet. I also learned to prioritize eating vegetables and nuts. It's great. I do eat sweets, but now I know how to eat a healthy diet to return to a healthy weight.
I wish she would have tried one of the chocolates sweetened with erythritol instead of sugar... i wonder if the results would have been more favorable...
Doesn’t taste as good as the real chocolate. No matter how hard I tried to like it, just not the same! Healthy things are not tasty, tasty things are unhealthy, have to pick and choose 😢
Test this please- gently melt 1-1/2 cups virgin coconut oil, add rounded tablespoon turmeric, heaping teaspoon ginger, teaspoon black pepper, teaspoon cayenne pepper ,teaspoon cumin, teaspoon nutmeg, teaspoon allspice, 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 oz square of 100% cacao baking chocolate bar , dump in pecan halves dip out with spider or slotted spoon, spread out on parchment and dust heavily with ceylon cinnamon
For comparison, In the UK, as a pre-diabetic interested in managing my blood glucose levels, I can buy a years supply of CGM's from Abbott Labs for about $1500 US, or about $125 a month.
Ive been curious about dark choc. I like the 85% breaking off a moderately small piece and dipping it into my black coffee until it begins to melt and then laying it on my tongue to finish its melt. I do this rarely but do enjoy it.
Great video. I would have loved to see your results with half of the popcorn with butter added. I am IR and diabetic for 20 years but started keto and IF 3 months ago. I have reduced my insulin injections by half so far. I started CGMs 4 months ago. What a blessing! Such an insights for diabetics as to what is going on with foods and your eating schedule! I highly recommend continuous glucose monitors for anyone with IR or diabetes.
I agree, I’d love to see exactly how butter helps because it’s a healthy fat & I’ll bet it helps a lot as long as you don’t eat too much popcorn, as she said.
I found out that Dark Chocolate doesn’t have to be bitter. Large companies over process as they get Cocoa from multiple farms and it is made bitter to suppress possible bad flavours, but it also suppresses good flavours.
Hi Dr Becky - your videos have been very informative and useful to me in my weight loss efforts. I had a heart attack and bypass surgery 5 years ago so my interests are in: Keto-like diet maintenance coupled with *healthy* trans and saturated fat consumption in view of my coronary artery disease. In the future I would like to see you (maybe) take some of your time in that direction. Thanks!
I have eaten a lot of popcorn over the years because it was said to be a weightloss aid and kept every calorie of it, while dieting or not. Thank you for providing such valuable information.
I love my almonds and pistachios and finally broke my milk chocolate addiction. I really don't like dark chocolate very much (not over 70%) and don't want to push myself since it's not essential. I'll have milk chocolate couple of times a year. I wish I loved hard boiled eggs but I do love omelets and scrambled etc. but don't consider it a snack sadly. Now popcorn....that's my cheat day snack, get the best I can in quality and make sure it's a lower carb day in other areas. Some give you 4 cups for under 200 although my body does use it quickly as Dr Becky saw in test. Thanks for your hard work and helping me lose the stubborn post menopause weight
If you put butter on the popcorn and *kept calories constant at 200kcal*, there'd be a huge reduction in the glucose spike, mainly because rather than 6 cups of popcorn it would be a small fraction of that.
I eat 100% dark chocolate, and I wish the doctor would cover it, too. It is in baking section of a supermarket and not with other sweets. My preference is Ghirardelli, although when I do not see on a shelf I take Baker’s chocolate.
I wish she would have done higher cocoa Chocolate like >90%. That level she used has a lot of sugar and little fiber. The one I eat is 92% and has more fiber than carbs, making it negative net carbs. That would have way different effects on glucose.
The lindt 85% is the one I usually have a square or two of, however most often along with a handful of nuts. Almond, macadamia, pecans, walnut, etc. Wonder if that makes a difference?
Very informative video! It’s great that you provided actual results, in contrast to other youtube “content” makers. What are your thoughts on the long-term effects of protein (such as boiled eggs) on the kidneys? How much protein is excessive, and will too much protein damage the kidneys over time? No one seems to agree, especially carnivore diet proponents.
Super! I suggest mixing popcorn with chocolate in appropriate ratios and compare that with mixing almonds with chocolate. You're the second Dr. Becky I've discovered. The other is an English astrophysicist.
Throwing out the remainder of my popcorn kernels which I cook on the stove in a mix of EVOO & unsalted butter. Opting for the almonds or toasted walnuts (I usually eat 1/2 of the serving size on pkg); 85-90% dark chocolates & HB eggs.
Becky, this is said with respect and humor as it is my first time watching you. But, “Sugar Cookie! My blood sugar spiked just watching you!” 😂 Thank you, I enjoyed the content, you have my interest in the Level Up CGM system.
This video was right on time!! I was just thinking of trying popcorn as a snack. (Maybe not now lol) And have been having 1oz of that same dark chocolate after dinner every night.. I have seen weightloss but now I can make some better choices and maybe see quicker results.

You taught us so well that just looking at the results I knew what is what.
Thank you for this video. Great information. I appreciate all you share here. You are my go to source for eating Keto.
I’m curious what would gain a rating of 10 if hard boiled eggs are a 9?
I found out that Dark Chocolate doesn’t have to be bitter. Large companies over process as they get Cocoa from multiple farms and it is made bitter to suppress possible bad flavours, but it also suppresses good flavours.
THANKS Dr Becky, Great Topic... !
this comparison is interesting…would love to see more!
That was fun. Loved the tests and solid info.
Very clear and informative. Please test more foods!
Pls do another snacks video I'd like to see more snacks reviewed this way
Great video 👍🏽👍🏽👏👏This provides us idea on what great snack should be.
Great video, explains a lot in an easily digestible way. Thanks for the real information.
If you put butter on the popcorn and *kept calories constant at 200kcal*, there'd be a huge reduction in the glucose spike, mainly because rather than 6 cups of popcorn it would be a small fraction of that.
there is a huge different between dark choc ,you can buy 100% which could have 12g sugar or you can buy dark choc 55% with has 50g of sugar
I eat 100% dark chocolate, and I wish the doctor would cover it, too. It is in baking section of a supermarket and not with other sweets. My preference is Ghirardelli, although when I do not see on a shelf I take Baker’s chocolate.
Wow! Thank you for this eye opening video.
I wish she would have done higher cocoa Chocolate like >90%. That level she used has a lot of sugar and little fiber. The one I eat is 92% and has more fiber than carbs, making it negative net carbs. That would have way different effects on glucose.
Say hi to Keith! I’m curious if his diet has changed with his current state? Love an update.
Still low-carb/keto with intermittent fasting.
This video was so helpful! I eat a lot of eggs. I do also snack on a piece of Sam's Choice or Lindt 90% or Lindt 95% chocolate at times.
The lindt 85% is the one I usually have a square or two of, however most often along with a handful of nuts. Almond, macadamia, pecans, walnut, etc. Wonder if that makes a difference?
I appreciate the information about the CGM cost, etc, and did not consider it an ad. Sorry some did, but it was just info........ sheez.
Chattanooga,TN Thank you for another excellent demo!
I have an egg allergy so they are out but appreciate knowing that almonds are ok.
Thank you Dr. Becky! This was an informative, very educational, and Excellent video!
Wow! This was such a perfect study for me thank you for explaining things so clearly 😊
Thank you so much dr Becky so informed ❤
Very informative video! It’s great that you provided actual results, in contrast to other youtube “content” makers. What are your thoughts on the long-term effects of protein (such as boiled eggs) on the kidneys? How much protein is excessive, and will too much protein damage the kidneys over time? No one seems to agree, especially carnivore diet proponents.
Thank you so very much Dr.
The snacks that you selected, were coincidentally my favorites.
Thank you for this very informative video. ❤❤❤
I can't find how to join the research study. Has anyone else found it? (btw, THANK YOU DR BECKY!!!)
So informative and interesting video. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for doing this and sharing your results!
Becky, this is said with respect and humor as it is my first time watching you. But, “Sugar Cookie! My blood sugar spiked just watching you!” 😂 Thank you, I enjoyed the content, you have my interest in the Level Up CGM system.
Thank u doc, this helps a lot.. very informative..👍
Great video. Thank you. Would be great if you can few more snack types - amongst nuts, seeds and fruits etc.
What a great video! You anticipated my questions on each food item! Thank you
This video was right on time!! I was just thinking of trying popcorn as a snack. (Maybe not now lol) And have been having 1oz of that same dark chocolate after dinner every night.. I have seen weightloss but now I can make some better choices and maybe see quicker results.
Does dry red wine spike blood sugar, in general? Just curious, because I have a glass at dinner and am not sure if that is helpful or not.
One of your best videos! Great information clearly presented. 😊
As a type 2 Diabetic (currently diet controlled with an A1c of 5.4) I had hoped to join a trial to have an endocrinologist implant a cgm in order to find foods worked for me... alas, that wasn't to be. I appreciate your testing!
Great information, thanks! Subscribed...
