      Hi Ron, can't thank you enough for that. It's a real boost to receive compliments like that as this one was a complete beast to put together. I'm still struggling with new audio hardware and had to adjust the audio in each segment, and am gradually getting to grips with a camcorder I've had for a few months (got into trouble with the wife for buying) and am now starting to see the benefits of. The funny thing about professional grade gadgetry is that you can't just bung it into automatic like you can with my good old consumer stuff. They expect everything to be tuned in manual mode, which isn't always straightforward when you're in front of the camera rather than behind it. Anyway, thanks again. I honestly don't think this would be worthwhile if I was just filming into a vacuum with none of the wonderful encouragement that you and others taking precious time out of their days to deliver. 👍👏

I don't care though because my ceilings look great and I haven't even started on the top coats yet. The only thing I'd add is that be really careful with how much you put in your paint bucket because if you can't roll off the excess you will get splattered. @@thomassmith3711 I used 2 coats for the kitchen as we liked the colour so we didn't feel the need to paint again. However in the bathroom we used 1 coat on the plaster and then painted over it with a Dulux trade paint. It works well as a primer and normal paint but it only comes in white. You may find that brush painting is a little off as we did have to go over the edges and corners again with a normal trade paint but for larger wall areas it works really well with a foam/brush roller.

    The No Nonsense Bare Plaster Paint is one of the few products I would highly reccomended. It can be used on still drying plaster as it let's the walls breathe and has a really good finish. I am a decorator and only came across this vlog searching for advice on farrow and ball paint and application on bare plaster.
    You describe everything to the letter and as a Johnstones product user, I agree with everything you mentioned
    The only thing I would add, get some decorators whites, to save getting covered in paint and if painting large ceilings, water down second and sometimes the third coat in a lesser percentage
    Flashing on a large ceiling is a nightmare
    Top job
    I would definitely recommend this video to anyone who is classed as a diyer

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  4 года назад +3

      Bryan, can't thank you enough for that contribution, and I could have done with watering down the second ceiling coat. I painted this room in Johnstone's Flat Matt, which helpfully they discontinued pretty much as soon as I walked out of the shop - I thought they could have told me that before I bought it!! They've brought out a new one which is much easier to spot paint, apparently. I've always got a massive amount of respect for professional decorators, or any professionals actually whose default position isn't to tear into people like me! It's normally a good indicator of the quality and professionalism of their own work - and I'm sure that goes for you, too! Thanks again 👍

      Then either feather the edges with a sander on larger areas or use a filler on small areas.

    Used the Screwfix bare plaster paint for the first last week and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was to be honest , went on nicely and very good opacity so a nice solid basecoat , i put some coving up the next day and where i wiped down the excess coving adhesive off the walls & ceiling with a damp sponge it didn't wipe any of the plaster paint off at all , sometimes a slightly powdery mistcoat will wash off if trying to do the same thing. Big thumbs up from me.

    I will give you top marks for this video. as a pro time served decorator since 1971 the amount of problems I have had to sort out simply because they haven't thinned the paint on the first coat. there is no sweet spot on the amount of thinning. it depends on the paint you are using. we normally use dulux trade paint which is usually thicker than diy paints. just add enough to get it to the way you had it

    • @CharlieDIYte

      Thanks so much Raymond. Receiving a positive endorsement from a pro is very humbling and also speaks fathoms about you as it's so easy for pro decorators to criticise us DIYers (and I've had my fair share of that in the past). My motto is basically as much water as you can get away with but as you say it's something you just have to guage. I have to reluctantly say I was quite impressed with the performance of that Screwfix bare plaster paint. Don't know how it works though. It's now hidden behind the wardrobe so I'll never know it's long term performance. 👍

      Yes. That stuff I recommended in the video Easi-Fill. I did a recent video on it here ruclips.net/video/6Omsv5-NN9k/видео.html. You can get it in a 5kg box, with 1kg bags inside. Mix up a small amount and apply with a continental filler knife, scraping the excess off so you're leaving no excess on the surface except in the crack itself. Then a very light sand (may not even need to sand) with 180grit and paper and then touch up with your wall paint. If you're lucky you will just be able to spot paint the crack without having to do the whole wall. Links to the filler knife etc in the Description below the video linked above.

    The bare plaster paint is brilliant, never have had a call back or even an issue. So much better than watering down emulsion. Also despite appearing thick in the tub, once it’s been mixed up it’s very wet, and covers me in splatters just as much as any mist coat I’ve mixed up. Only thing I’d recommend is doing opposing walls, i mini roll my internal angles and sometimes when you go against an opposing wet angle it’ll sometimes try and drag the paint off

    I'm really glad I found this video of painting on bare plaster.
    We're having our own house built and it's concrete based, not wood.
    Since paint jobs are so costly these days and it takes up a lot of days to finish up, we're thinking to do it by ourselves.
    What's your recommendation for a bare, newly concrete plastered walls and ceilings in terms of priming it and then finishing it off with a quality paint?
    We do have Dulux in our country, although it's a bit expensive but if it can be thinned down, I'll think about giving it a shot.
    We painted our previously owned house with a general primer and the retailer suggested to put in some acrylic with a bit of water too I think and then prime the walls with it, or like you said a bit misty like.
    We painted the whole house, inside by ourselves and I was so pleased with myself for doing such a good job (I even chiseled down a 1x1 to make 5 ft and 7 ft long wooden rods in replacement of the extendable ones, which aren't available here).
    Anyhow, I'd love to know what your suggestions are. The house isn't plastered yet, but I'm already thinking about doing the inside paint job ourselves.
    Very informative videos for people like myself, really appreciate the effort you put in these videos and letting us know what to buy or do and what not to.
    Thanks a bunch.

      @CharlieDIYte  3 года назад +1

      Thanks. I appreciate that 👍🏻 The important thing as I said in the video is to prime it either with a mist coat or with a bare plaster paint, and that bare plaster paint I used was actually pretty good. If you're going to water down a mist coat you have to make sure the paint can be watered down. I would go with a contract matt. I wouldn't mix acrylic in with it as the acrylic, like vinyl is an additive to make the top coat more durable. The base coat doesn't want these additives as they won't sink into the plaster.

    I never realised we have a Johnstone's decorating centre only 6 miles away from me. All this time I never knew it was there. Never realised they actually had any. Surprised to see on their online store finder they're everywhere! It gets better; just found one for Dulux within a couple miles from the Johnstone's one as well. I think I'll be taking a drive later.

      You're very welcome. Good luck with the mist coat.

      @@CharlieDIYte so I’ve hit a little stumble. I’ve put my first mist coat up and there is one small dark patch that has come through from the plaster.
      Now it’s been 2 weeks since the plaster was put on so can’t be wet still. Will wait until dry and see if another coat covers it.
