Powdered graphite allows an artist to create smooth transitions of value and shading without visible pencil lines and without having to smudge with a finger. When powdered graphite is used in a drawing, the artist can use the eraser as a mark-making tool for lighter values, while still using the pencil for darker tones. This helps to encourage the development of a full range of value in the drawing.

I introduced powdered graphite to my drawing students a couple of years ago. We used graphite sold as lubricant from the hardware store. Very cheap. The students really liked working with it.

You put your students at risk of death im not joking. Go check the list of potential problems when using graphite powdere lubricant thats not used for art, its a few things among them death if it gets in the airways. Dont cheap out when it comes to health & safety.

Nice! this also works with soft pastels, compressed charcoal sticks, and graphite sticks. I also just use a knife to scrape off the graphite onto a paper and use a brush to blend it.

Powdered graphite is also something we use in prop making to give a gunmetal finish to items like weapons, and to weather items like armor and equipment to make it look worn and dirty.

I got a small jar and emptied the powder from my lead holder. Pure graphite. I use 4h, hb, and 4b; so, I can't tell you what the shading is. Probably closest to hb. So keep your powder from the sharpener of your lead holder instead of throwing it away. I still haven't been able to use it efficiently but I have it.
I.e. I have no idea if this would work with a wooden pencil. It won't work with mechanical unless you grind the lead.

I will often rub the drawing end with the stomp and draw with it. Again, interesting, but no more or less time consuming.
