Powdered graphite allows an artist to create smooth transitions of value and shading without visible pencil lines and without having to smudge with a finger. When powdered graphite is used in a drawing, the artist can use the eraser as a mark-making tool for lighter values, while still using the pencil for darker tones. This helps to encourage the development of a full range of value in the drawing.

I introduced powdered graphite to my drawing students a couple of years ago. We used graphite sold as lubricant from the hardware store. Very cheap. The students really liked working with it.
Hope they are safe if inhaled!
Can we buy it at Michael's art store or elsewhere?
You put your students at risk of death im not joking. Go check the list of potential problems when using graphite powdere lubricant thats not used for art, its a few things among them death if it gets in the airways. Dont cheap out when it comes to health & safety.

@@leif1075 never buy art supplies at Michaels, you will inevitably pay more and get an inferior product even with their "discounts"
Nice! this also works with soft pastels, compressed charcoal sticks, and graphite sticks. I also just use a knife to scrape off the graphite onto a paper and use a brush to blend it.
Powdered graphite is also something we use in prop making to give a gunmetal finish to items like weapons, and to weather items like armor and equipment to make it look worn and dirty.
Wow that’s cool to know!!
I've been toning my entire piece of paper for ages, I didn't realize it was actually an established technique! This powdered graphite thing is a fantastic idea, I will definitely try it out. Thanks!
As a kid I discovered that when I sharped my pencil, I could make shadows and clouds with the powder graphite that comes of... I recently starting drawing again and often I remember that I already did things as a child... Kids really have such creative minds to create
Same here!
I am back. Yes, I am in your course, but had a shoulder injury and haven't "been around" in a couple of months. I am anxious to get back into the course and your weekly demonstrations. It is good to your face, Matt.
Wow! I always learn something amazing from your videos! I just started drawing 2 years ago, and pencil is my favorite; I would never have thought of doing this. Your drawings using this technique are stunning! Thank you so much for sharing your talents and knowledge with us! (from Philadelphia area)
I have a jar of graphite powder somewhere in my collection of drawing paraphernalia, gotta dig it out and play!
I use cosmetic sponges to move the powder around the page. Works beautifully for portraits.
Ha ha! I just learned a valuable lesson… never use powdered graphite near a ceiling fan! That stuff flies everywhere with the gentlest of breezes.
Me, too! Those little sponges are fun to use throughout my mixed media practice -- fluid and dry.
Great great video. Thank you Matt.
I bought graphite at a hardware store to try after using graphite powder in a class.
I enjoy messy stiff I guess.
I just tried this, since I'm struggling with portraits atm, and holy crap! Nvr going back to the way I was doing it! Absolutely amazing!
wow it so simple to understand , i'm beginner but it way too useful for me to see in broader way to see pictures and try my drawing
Learned abt graphite powder yrs ago & keep forgetting abt it. I have some woodless graphite sticks I never use & can shave down. Thanks!
So awesome 👍. Thank you so much for your tutorials. I've been drawing for so long and with ADHD and no formal schooling this truly inspires and helps me. It's refreshing to know that some techniques I use, like using pencil shavings, are actually real and I could've learned to do a lot earlier had I not been so hard headed...😂 God bless 🙏
Powdered graphite what a break through for me. I also paint so this method really speaks to me, this I can get my head around, thank you. I struggle to get depth and smooth tones with pencils, this will really help.
WOW! I had no idea this was possible. I love pencil drawing. This is a whole other way to use graphite. I can't wait to give it a try.
Loving graphite powder. Will definitely do more work with graphite
I regret that my Art Instructor at college didn't cover graphite media. This is a big game changer for me. Thanks for an extraordinary experience.
I dearly love this technique. Love the push/pull of graphite. Brings me great pleasure.
I would even dare to suggest to keep a spritz bottle / fine mist sprayer handy with 90% alcohol like pastel artists. Use it to seal the powder thats already on the paper and then add next layer.
Thankyou!🎉😊
Wow! I've had some of this for a while but never used it. (Got it at a garage sale). I will try it tomorrow. Fabulous!
Fantastic. This is precisely the information I've been lacking. Thank you!
Wow!! Amazing results!! I love it
I'm a beginner . And ready went learn how to draw good poetry
I've been using powder graphic from my staedtler sharpener for quite some time. cool!

Love this , Thank-you so much.🌸🇦🇺
Good video. I just learned to do charcoal in the same way, using a brush or tissue. Thank you, 🙄Light blub on now-use with graphite. Why didn't I think of that😲
This fellow Matt is really cute. He gives good art advice too!
You look clean ( & civilized).

So, painting with graphite and detailing with pencil. Got it.
Great lesson! I will try to apply it in my drawings.
Could you use a similar technique with pastel chalks and chalk pencils?
Omg I've been saving my pencil stubs and was wondering what
I'm gonna use them 4? Well u just answered my question. Thanks for the free lessons greatly appreciated just got u a new sub cheers 😉
Fantastic. Do you have a video like this to make portraits ?

thanks sir
Thank you for sharing the graphite techniques
Thank you for sharing your expertise. You're great.
I've been using powdered graphite to free up locks and lubricate my model locomotives - now I havee another use.
Thank You!! I will try this approach
I got a small jar and emptied the powder from my lead holder. Pure graphite. I use 4h, hb, and 4b; so, I can't tell you what the shading is. Probably closest to hb. So keep your powder from the sharpener of your lead holder instead of throwing it away. I still haven't been able to use it efficiently but I have it.
I.e. I have no idea if this would work with a wooden pencil. It won't work with mechanical unless you grind the lead.
I will be taking your courses. Your work is beautiful. Can you add the photos you used?
Hélio dear master. I am from São Paulo , Brazil. Beautiful idea. Thank you.
Nice. How do you fix the graphite afterwards?
Although i have never used graphite powder, this technique may be worthy of investigating; however, with the same skillful hand, I Am able to get the same results with a stomp. I will often rub the drawing end with the stomp and draw with it. Again, interesting, but no more or less time consuming.
It looks hard to do! I’m willing to try though.
Both drawings looked so good. How do you seal them? Or isn’t this necessary? Thanks
Awesome, gives me so many ideas
Thank you for the video, you encourage me to get better.
Do you have a list of materials you use to create these effects?
Love this! I have one question - do you spray some type of fixture on the picture once you are done? This would be to avoid smudging over time and while framing it to hang on the wall.
Thank you for providing this video and the others you do in connection with your classes. Great work! :)
very good. Thank you. I did some time ago a course with you. I recomend.
Nice..gave me new ideas. Thanks again for another great video!
Thx so clear and helpful and artistically wonderful
Which grade, tooth or brand of paper do you think works best with graphite powder? Every time I try using it, I think it looks messy or unrealistic.
I wonder if Im using the wrong brushes to apply it? Does it matter?
Good question
simply spectacular!
Are you using Stonehenge Watercolor paper?
Very nifty, Matt. Your drawings were beautiful, especially the glass and bottle. 🤓. I am going to try powdered graphite.
how about different colors in this tricking, or deleting drawing.
And how to make it long time saved.
Protect cover, or use as a print or photo?
Thanks. Enjoy your time and art.
Thích những người bên đạo dậy đàn hay như vậy:)).
Helpful...very!! Thank you!
That’s awesome thank you for the tips
Incredible! Great tips!!
Liked your work very much
Thanks so much, Matt!
I’ve been an artist for years…never heard of this. Thank you! Is there something similar for colored pencils? Right now I use pan pastels but they’re not always user friendly with some of the surfaces I use.
"Is a re-mark-able tool", I see what you did there.
Great video and technique.
I can get the same effect with a number two pencil and a stubby. And I don't have to file it down on sandpaper.
What kind of tape was used for the edges?
My first time watching ! You’re Extremely talented and a Great Teacher. I’m subscribing. Shall I say with this technique lesson you’re teaching us how to be more SHADY??? LOL!😂 BLESSINGS!😃❤️
Absolutely fantastic artwork!!!
man you are an amazing artist
the drinking glass is brilliant .black & white is beautiful. of course, when I see that big brush covered in graphite clouding up the whole picture, I wanna scream, but I know the outcome will be great. jellyfish resemble parachutes. I'd rather encounter a parachute. thank you, for another invaluable lesson.
Great video! Thanks a lot! When you return with the 45 min livestreams?
Hi Henrique, We'll return with Gettin' Sketchy in October. :)
