Thanks for the test 👍
Thank you for watching!
Hi Jack. thank you for your videos. I really enjoy and learn a lot from them. In some of the other videos you show the graphs for your extractions. As an owner of Decent machine, I appreciate that and hope you can include graphs in your future videos. Thank you again.
Thank you very much for watching. Yeah, I used to do that. Sometimes still do. Was thinking that for non-decent baristas that was boring. I have a plan to record a video about an alternative app for Decent, with plenty of screen shots.
I was gifted a Weber basket and while visiting Taiwan I got a WAFO blend/checker that is not currently available outside of Taiwan. Both are great baskets
Thx for sharing. Maybe I should test more Wafo baskets then.
Could you explain how you dial in them differently?
Did you grind it so they all give you the same ratio in the same amount of time? Or did you do it differently?
From my understanding, these different baskets may require different dialing in. I'm curious, if all dialed in to their optimum settings, how would they taste in comparison?
For eg, you mentioned Wafo would extract a lot faster, and therefore, easier to over extract. You'd have to grind finer to get the same parameters, right?
Interesting question. I could over complicate this test, running multiple samples and so on. I have decided to dial them in to the same time of extraction. I was aiming for 30sec in reheearsal, end up with around 27sec during the actual test. The interesting bit was that both Wafo and VST with wet paper had the same grind settings. For Unibasket I had to grind finer. As I mentioned in the video each of those shots could be improved. For example, I had a chat today with mr Wafo and he offered me few tips, like that I should increase the temperature and ratio for his basket to reach it’s full potential.
I strongly believe that even if each basket was dialled in to the perfection, we would still have the same results
Should i upgrade my vst basket used with papar filter to weber unibasket? Weber unibasket works for milk drinks? My espresso machine is a lelit bianca
Good question. I won’t tell you what to do but you would notice the difference especially in espresso. It would work nicely for flat white but for anything with lots of milk filler basket probably doesn’t matter that much.
We use the wafo classic and wafo blend at my coffee shop - they give the most consistent shots between different baristas as well as really consistent range in extraction % in our opinion
Thank you for the info. I would love to test them all but can’t afford that.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Yea the only reason we could was because I bought them through the business haha
Are you experiencing any clogging or difficulties cleaning between shots or cleaning after high volume days? I get worried that these newer baskets would be a pain to clean and would impact cafe workflow despite the increased flavor
@@m.andre824 Sorry for the late reply! Nope, if anything they come out cleaner than standard vst baskets!
Any thoughts on whether these types of baskets add anything to medium or darker roasts? I dont mean black and oily beans but ones sold under the 'house espresso' style from many specialty roasters
I was actually thinking about it yesterday. I would not buy Wafo Soe/Spirit for that but they have other models more suited for darker roasts. Fast flowing basket can easily overextract. Pullman for example would be better imo , for more balanced approach. Having said that, I had some great shots with medium roast and Wafo so I guess it all depends on coffee and profile.
Damnit Jack! I do not want one of these crazy expensive baskets yet.
Time to get a Pullman 876 and try that instead of VST.
You might want to consider it unfortunately.
In one of my previous videos VST was second, after Wafo but before Pullman and that is why I used it for this test.
My weber just arrived in the mail today, I can't seem to get a good shot though. I am using paper filter on the bottom and screen on top. I did have to adjust my grinder more fine, if I did not I would do 15 seconds shots if I left it the same as my VST basket. I am using 20g of coffee.
It takes some time to get used to those premium, fast flowing baskets but I promise you, once you hit the spot, the taste should be great.
What Profile do you use for your espresso shots?
Damian’s LM leva
Did you try sworksdesign basket? Gonna be interesting...
Unfortunately can’t afford everything.
1:55 I got my Unifilter used for a good price, and I was like OMG I didn't get that (potentially special sized) spring with it!? Then I realized, it's a whole portafilter and doesn't need a spring :D
Hahaha. Let me know how you like it, when you have a chance to play with it.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I just put up the first impressions video if you want to watch that. Haven't done any real taste comparisons vs the Decent or Pullman baskets with a paper bottom filter yet. Might also try to compare with the stock ECM basket which I like heh.
I would be curious to see the different baskets compared with a washed coffee as well, and paper vs no paper. My guess is that different baskets will be best with different coffees, paper or not, and profiles.
Hi, you are absolutely right- there are many options.
In the previous tests I used different profiles and no filter papers. I used Turbo and also Allonge, and 6bar shots but lots of viewers asked for “normal “ profiles and paper filters.
So with the current price decrease to £68 is unibasket a better value than wafo at 180-200+?
I haven’t tried that “cheap” Unibasket myself, but if it works as well as the old version, then definitely go for it.
@@mycoffeeshow111 its the same they just decreased the price
Another great video Jack. I'm using an E&B 18-20gr nanotech basket with Weber paper filters. Modest price with great returns.
Thank you! Why Weber filter? Do you think they are better than generic papers?
@@mycoffeeshow111 I like that they are made in Japan, no other reason to be honest.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I got some Weber paper filters (with Unifilter!) and also some paper filters from Good brothers coffee but haven't tried the Weber stuff yet, no 58mm machine set up at the moment :(

I like your work...but... did you get a new camera ? The autofocus is all over the place 🤦🏻♂️ maybe try some manual fixed focus or just a lover F stop number like F4 or F5,6...
Keep up the good work though 😉
Thank you. I had that camera for good few months. I struggle with the autofocus. The camera is set to detect my eyes but also on any item I keep in hand. As I often talk with my hands, the face loses the focus.
There’s 5 Wafo baskets now. There’s one called “Checkmate” on the Taiwan site, not the international site. Checkerboard pattern of holes.
Yeah, I heard about it. One of the viewers already got it. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to get any more baskets. I contacted Sworks but they ignored my message. Maybe I will ask Wafo next.
@@mycoffeeshow111 checkmate is the best one of WAFO imo. Otherwise I prefer the sworks (better quality and magnetic).
@@xlXKiNQXlx I have contacted Sworks but they ignored me. I also contacted Wafo and they were very helpful. Who knows, maybe we see their other baskets on this channel as well.
It costs more than my coffee machine 😅
They are ridiculously expensive, that is true.
I prefer the Pulman over the VST with my gaggia - The geek in me is willing to sell a kidney to get a Decent though
In my previous test VST was better than Pullman, hence I used it in this video. Who needs a kidney if you have Decent 😛
🙂🙂🙂
$200 for one basket it's ridiculous. That basket should blow me for that money.
Hahaha. You are right. There is a cheaper version available now, around $80 if I remember correctly. I already sold this one but there will be some new baskets from China arriving soon.
Since we're already at the highest levels of obsession and nitpicking, let me contribute the following comment regarding the blind tasting method: if you place cups in the order 1,2,3 on a circle and then randomly rotate it, after checking one you will already know the identity of all of them. You would need a machine that permutes cups more chaotically ;)
You might be right that this are not very scientific tests, especially when sometimes I only compare 2 samples. Having said that, I easily get confused and honestly don’t know which is which so it is as far as it can be.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Oh, sure, I'm 99% joking :) it is just an observation that my math-oriented brain immediately jumped to (that you have 3 possible configurations rather than 6). If someone wanted to actually cheat the process, I'm sure that e.g. trying to sense which cup is the hottest would be easier.
@@JakubTarnawski I am always open for and grateful for suggestions so please keep them coming .
For this test to be statistically significant we would need multiple samples and group of participants. Maybe one day, when I become famous, I’ll have a team of researchers working for me. For the time being, my humble setup has to be enough.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Well, apparently James Hoffmann has been intending (for years now) to do a video on comparing decaffeination methods, very "properly", with multiple coffees and samples and participants and what not (or maybe the same green coffee with caffeine removed using different methods; can't quite remember). It's a big undertaking, and the outcome is that there is no video, so far at least, whereas you have one on decaf methods. So, I would say you're giving him a run for his money :)
