My partner used to do walk away or shut down in an argument and it was a sure fire way to escalate it. I’d get so mad and it would always turn into a yelling match. We now have a safe word when we feel like the disagreement is about to turn up a notch and emotions are high. One of us will say it when they feel themselves getting upset and no matter where we are in the conversation, we stop and go collect our thoughts. There hasn’t been a single time where we have come back and we were both still heated. It gives you time to gather your thoughts and feelings and present it to the other person without the fire and emotion behind it which is usually what causes heated fights. It also prevents it from becoming a yelling match. It’s worked wonders for us.
My boyfriend is also 9 years older than me and I got to say I love it. He is so calm and relaxed and sorted out. No mucking around with your heart. Just honest love.
I have learned to appreciate when my husband walks away from an argument. If I keep pushing him to talk he says things he doesn’t mean. Well we both do. Yes, my husband always is the first to return with hugs and kisses.
