There are dozens of ways to make a list of the best video games of all time.
You could go by classics like Super Mario Bros. You could go by influence on the medium or by highest sales. You could write your personal favorites on slips of paper and then throw them up in the air. Where do the slips of paper end up? That's your list!
But here we have something more scientific. The review site Metacritic aggregates all game reviews and then calculates an overall average. Below, you'll find the top 50 highest-rated games of all time, based on Metacritic's averages.
We have made one small change: Since there are a handful of duplicates on the list (multiple versions of the same game released on multiple platforms), we're using the highest-ranked version of the game to make room for a handful of games that otherwise wouldn't have made the list.
