Doesn't say much for the British education system, their wilful ignorance in relation to the absolute horrors of their colonial past is truly sickening. But hey let's wave a union flag instead.
She was and IS brilliant.. I was glued to the Derry Girls the second I saw the first episode. The entire cast is amazing & its sad to see that ignorance of ones history and lack of knowledge about your closest neighbour is eviddntly a big factor in the UKs brushing aside the NI issue.. As she perfectly said, lets replace flags and Churchillian quotes with basic education
I was born in The Republic, grew up in England, now live in Wales. Growing up with the English education system that glorifies everything about Britain's past, from Hadrian's Wall to Henry VIII to Churchill's grand speeches. The only lesson that involved Ireland's history was half an hour on Cromwell's invasion. Most of my classmates, aged around 14, had no idea Ireland was a separate country. Indeed I think many of them still have no idea. I've had family members who've gone to Ireland and been surprised that they use a different currency. The Great British Public have an astounding level of ignorance about the world around them.
Learn about tudors and guy fawkes. I think that teaching about NI history as a part of the uk isn't allowed due to ' sensitivities ' but even then the secondary school history I remember is that my teacher skated over the potato famine and just said 'and they voted to become a republic'.
