@@pistacja5162everyone has very different takes on Utena, so take this with a grain of salt. Nanami in the beginning is like Anthy when she was young, she idolizes her brother and has naivety towards people’s hatred for her. And as the episodes progressed, it leaned more into symbolism. She screams out how people are not “reacting” to the weirdness around them, and is constantly surrounded by animals, as if mocking her attempts are never going to be understood as human words, and connecting back to Anthy, who we know that in a way, controls this world, so she probably lashed out on Nanami, intentionally putting her through psychological distress. At the end of the series, she is the only character who took off her duelist uniform, and claimed “I want to forget these things as soon as possible.” It’s almost like she is the only waking person in this dream-like cage, she represents a child who believes in her prince, but more importantly, a child who is not confined or blinded by the values of adulthood. In the movie, she is not even a human, she is just another animal. But she is no longer a part of the endless cycle. Anyway that's my take, but some people just like her because she's hilarious.
I really like the “see me as a poet and not just the muse” line showing Utena in the princess/damsel form. It reminds me of the way it’s repeated over and over that she’s a girl so she can never become a prince.
I adore how smoothly this amv shifts between these characters and their dynamics, absolutely open mouthed at the shift from saionji to utanthy to nanami in the 3rd verse it was PERFECT.
This is SUCH a good choice for utena, it goes so well with the theming and the odd fluttery laugh(?) in the background sounds like the sort of sound effect the show would use. You weave all of these relationships together so well, it really emphasizes that all of them are inherently unequal and that the patriarchal system Akio represents and perpetuates requires that someone always be subordinate and lesser to the prince figure in order to raise him up, and how that generates resentment and insecurity. I also really love that you included nanami and saionji in this! The trifecta of complicated emotions that is Utena, Anthy and Akio often overshadows them, but that tension between leader and supporter is just as present and as important as the more obvious examples. Nanami is such a good version of this because at the beginning she's the last person you'd assume was a Brutus figure, too infatuated with Touga to care about anything more serious, and by the end she's one of the characters who understands the most of what's actually going on and actually takes action. The way you parallel Anthy and Nanami in this, especially those first 15 second or so, its just excellent. And the "poet, not just the muse" line, it couldn't fit better. Really lovely work! Edit: watching this again, and I can't believe i missed how insidious and unsettling the correlation of "restore greatness to rome" and Akio's attempts to place Utena in the princess role while he reclaims the prince title and power is
Ough this animation is such a good reflection of all of the relationships that akio has his evil little hands in, the similarity between them all and the pain they directly and indirectly cause. BIG FAN!!!
This is a literal sign for me to reread a manga from my childhood again 😪😩 had the first few volumes in my school library and never even got to finish it
Give a chance to the animeeee pleeeease It's much crazier than the manga and quite a bit more mature, from what I've heard (I've only watched the series and the film); it might be a way to revisit the story but from a darker and more nuanced perspective, if you want (nothing wrong in wanting something more light-hearted ofc)
this is incredible!! all the character dynamics and how you create parallels between them is fantastic and the way the lyrics perfectly match the scenes you those is stunning!! this actually like altered my brain chemistry it was so great!!
Came here thinking I'd hear a song by The Hives (lol) but this is cool too. Never heard this one before, but now I've checked out The Buttress' music video and personally I think this goes harder :P
Thanks to this video I’ve started to watch the anime. I’m only on the 5th episode but something tells me by what I’ve seen that I’ll be in tears by the end of it.
Kind of awesome how this video now has enough views for people to brazenly ask for the answer that is immediately provided in both the title and description. I know this may seem like I'm being bitter or facetious, but to be clear I do genuinely love that. It's called Revolutionary Girl Utena, it's free to watch (in many regions, so if you can't access it in your area just use a VPN) on RUclips (Nozomi Entertainment channel playlist), and it's the greatest anime of all time. Enjoy!
It's impressive that this video manages to be about Anthy/Akio, Anthy/Utena, Nanami/Touga and Saionji/Touga at the same time.
All of the duelists are connected by one thread All of them are being manipulated by Aiko through means of Anthy.
AND utena/akio!!
You can tell when someone gets or doesn't get Utena based off whether they like nanami
I didn't get Utena, can you explain it to me, if you have time?
This is so true Nanami is SOOO important

@@Huhu0137 Thank you so much for explaining taking your time and explaining it to me 💕
Nanami is complicated, I really disliked her at first but my heart aches for her so much now.
"please know my actions are not motivated only by envy" OOF OUGH AUGH
I love you included Nanami. She's usually not taken seriously
She's my favorite character and she has been since the second she was first introduced. She's my everything
1:00 “should i embrace it, should i run” you absolute man man, that’s insane

UNBELIEVABLY HYPE.
I bought this song because of your video, incidentally I found out the instrumental through an educational short about chinchillas 🐹
Wow, I think this song is quite a good fit for the idea of the "revolution" from the perspective of the female characters. I love it!
Yes! Nanami!! Love this
