Mont Saint-Michel: A Legendary Landmark of France

The “Wonder of the Western World” forms a tower in the heart of an immense bay invaded by the highest tides in Europe. For nearly one thousand years men, women and children went there by roads called "paths to paradise" hoping for the assurance of eternity, given by the Archangel of judgement. It all started with Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, who built and consecrated a small church in the year 709. It took several centuries to build it the way it is now. Monks have lived here since the 6th century.
It is not uncommon that pilgrims have drowned to and from the Mont saint Michel, being caught by the tide, that could rise to 14 meters. Pilgrims would have no other choice but to cross during low tide. They say that the tide rises at the speed of a galloping horse.
