Kevin, I emailed and texted the dealership last week. My mom is looking for a brand new 2024 Toyota Corolla. I offered $24,500 OTD. The manager texted me back and forth. He said that it was an aggressive price. He asked if he could get me that deal, would I come in that day and buy. I told them I need the paperwork in advance. He danced around it. I told him I’d come in once I had the chance to review the paperwork. He never sent it. The last message he sent was: “I understand. Sorry to hear about your accidents, but you should be aware that the only reason you needed GAP I'm the first place was that you didn't put sufficient money down on the vehicles at the time of purchase. At least 20% down is the advised amount. No GAP is needed then! Your full coverage insurance does what it's supposed to do.
When shopping online and you narrow your search to a specific range, make sure you contact ever dealership from the lowest price to the highest price - what most people are finding out is the dealerships with the lowest price are not the dealerships with the lowest totals to purchase and the dealers with the higher prices are more inline with thier out the door totals - it just proves which dealerships are lying about price just so you dont have to waste your time or reward such dealerships

Here in Calgary Canada Toyota dealers sell new Camrys but call then "trade ins" @ separate locations for $10000 over MSRP. No kidding. Another Toyota Dealer is more reasonable & I can get one in 2 weeks if I buy $4000 worth of sketchy 3M film & extended service & warranty ad ons. Otherwise I was told to wait until next spring when they might have some inventory in stock & then might sell for MSRP & a $999 Doc Fee which is even on Toyota Canada website = $4000 gross profit on a $41000 SE AWD. Now they just want $8000 to $14000 Gross profit. Dealer greed factor runs high here in Canada. Almost forgot to ad if you trade a car they want $10000 spread between what you get as traade in & what they sell it for.

I am not one for government intervention and overreach, however, the Federal Trade Commission really needs to regulate what dealerships are able to do. I worked for a major funeral home group and the Federal Trade Commission mandated that our list of services and merchandise was updated and we had to present it to the customer before we could even talk price. That eliminated a guy pulling up in a Rolls-Royce getting charged triple the amount for a casket and services, which is what the practice was back in the day.
Generally speaking, on a new vehicle purchase, should the OTD price be very close to the MSRP window sticker price? I have calculated the approximate dealer markup and figured the tax and license and my numbers always come very close to the MSRP price.
That can be the case with some vehicles. In any event, the OTD should not exceed the MSRP. Cars are so plentiful right now that the actual selling prices should ALWAYS be below MSRP. For some vehicles, the actual selling price is FAR below MSRP.
So dealers can’t sell cars, but they want you to believe that the minute a vehicle rolls off the truck they are slapping some ceramic coating on it and they have to charge you for it..
Visit the FTC website and look up Tying the sale.
