neet idea i think i would use sliding dovetail joints for my spine lock as i suspect less than an inch of locking surface would be needed and the slides could be spring loaded for quick unlocking. thanks for the video

Maybe just go simpler next time. Instead of a segmented blade, make a solid blade and construct it like a large folding knife with a liner lock.

Don't know if I'm the first to say anything, as this is the first of your videos I've watched, but I love the play on Big Shot from Cowboy Bebop.

If u feel like ur projects keeps getting rushed u could take the Alec Steele route. Meaning you sketch out a design and plan out some parts. Then in the next vid make a prototype of certain parts to try out different approaches. Then start making the final parts focusing on things like getting bends out or adding extra design. Then finishing out with the final piece, as well as tests and the conclusion. Or u could make shorter vids throughout the process of a project. Something like looking at the source material or reacting to people’s versions or comments on ur own creations.
I can definitely agree on the rushed part. Especially towards the end of this video. I’m trying to build up a buffer of videos so that it gets easier to plan with sponsorships.
Regarding the multi part videos, I’m actually not a huge fan. Especially since 90% of my viewers are non-subscribers and seeing how bad some „less exciting“ videos performed in the past, I could imagine the whole project falling flat because it’s split up too much in too many videos. I think the format works great for alec steele because people know him and trust his content, so he has a regular viewership that’s large enough for that.

The parts being nested together during the quench caused it to act similar to a tube.
The heated oil inside expanded and boiled forcing itself up the makeshift tube to gush out the top (like coffee does in a percolator pot), and it was hot enought to catch on fire once it was exposed to the air at the top, creating the flame fountain effect.
Always quench tubes horizontally to minimize this, otherwise you can spew flaming oils everywhere and cause a shop fire.
Very smart of you to always wear the face shield.

I have a suggestion for the next time you try this. If you want to stick with this system, you could ditch the rods connecting to the handle and just attach them to the lower blade part, then if you spring load the spinelock with a powerful enough spring, with a flick it would unfold the top piece.
Great idea! I’ll only have to find a way to not have the spinelock obstruct the opening of that first segment, otherwise the tip segment couldn’t fold into it. Maybe on the sides of the blade or something like that

@@NjordArtisan If you go with putting it on the outside you could use pipes cut in half down the center to make a u shape as a brace, it would fit around the rod for the Spinelock while also bracing it during a slash. The only issue I see with that would be the folding back up...
Massive respect for continuing this project. With how different your design has become compared to the original, I've come to realize that a lot of Dishonored's tech is designed to "function on the outside" with only theory to power the cogs we cant see, that is, mechanically the tech is sound and could function if it was designed from the start to do so but as its an art medium first, it's designed to look cool while it functions without worrying if it can in the first place. The tallboys, arc pylons, walls of light, clockwork tech, its all founded on mechanical principles that were just turned up to eleven for the sake of artistic design to display the worldbuilding naturally. That's the beauty of Dishonored, its familiar yet strange world and lore are so meticulously designed we forget its not comparable to our world in many ways and it shows how the developers put so much care into it.

I've seen dozens of "hidden blade" type creator videos over the years, but this one finally made it click in my head that the actual way cooler and more functional version of this would basically just be one of those telescoping/expandable metal batons where the last section or two had a blade integrated. Eliminates all of the faults of rotating hinges, maintains low profile, and best of all it's a spear, which we all know is the objectively best melee weapon.

I have been in love with this sword since inception and have sketched a dozen different ways to make it, the most effective being having the lower blade be able to split open and the upper tip to slide out, then by using compression in the handle you squeeze the lower blade back together which holds the upper blade in its channel with its own mini tang. It makes the blade ~ 2/3 lower and 1/3 upper for its appearance but it should be able to be steady. Love to see your working version in the future.

could try mixing both methods together. make the folding section like before so it goes along with your countries regulations, but then have a sliding rod section in the back of the handle so when you swing the blade open, you slide that rod in the back of the sword up into the blade so it's firm.
That's a great idea! I’ll have to find a way to not have the rod block the opening on the spine, because otherwise the tip segment couldn’t fold into it
Maybe have the tip of the blade be the tube part the spine lock.
Your remarks about how after you commented on how well it was going, it started to go south for you reminded me of a time I went to work. One of my duties is cleaning our car wash. There was a day I went in, all nonchalantly and cheery because, just like two days before, it had been a relatively nice day the day before, so I was expecting it to be an easy day's job, just like it had been the day before. I remember the thought "How bad could it be?" entering my mind......only to find a total mess! The closest thing I can think of to describe what awaited me is that it looked like someone had backed in there with a cement truck filled with mud, poured it out and spread it across the floor until the whole thing was covered in an even two inch thick layer. After staring at this sight with awe for a minute or so, I just burst into laughter. I *just* had to ask how bad it could be.......THE UNIVERSE PROMPTLY ANSWERED! And, now, whenever that thought creeps into my mind in regards to the car wash, I immediately inwardly groan.......because the universe ALWAYS answers!
At the 10 minute mark when you quenched that was a tube boil over type event. The oil superheats vaporizing in the confined space and pushes the oil up the tube that was formed from the part being nested together. On contact with the air the oil in both vapor and fluid flash burns. To combat that insert pieces like that and tubes flat with the ground or anticipate the flare up and prepare accordingly.
Going back to your previous design, i'm sure you could use a frame lock (like in some folding knives) to secure the tip in the open position.
It would still deploy very fast and easily, and you would only need to put your hand on the back of the blade to fold it up.
Also would be a lot simpler to build and to adjust (it's just using basic knife making technics and adapting them to your design), and it would give you more freedom in terms of the appearance of the piece.
Anyway, keep up the good work. Just try to remember, simple designs tend to work best and are harder to break.

I was thinking about doing a framelock but I'm afraid it might not be sturdy enough for a sword because you've got so much leverage at the lock when hitting something with the tip of the sword. Guess I'll have to make one version to try that out 😄

For your quench getting a curve, you can use clay to for the opposite effect katana making uses.
Covering the thin parts of metal you can help them cool at a closer rate to the rest of the blade

a lever action sword is actually a really cool idea, I think youre onto something there, but the blade may have the hinge from the opposite side

Winchester is just one of the brands that produces those types of fire arms you mentioned around the 28:00 mark. Though, you're probably referring to the Winchester 1887, which has a Lever Action design, that lever action in particular is a shotgun, not a rifle, but whenever someone refers to a lever action Winchester, a lot of people actually mean the shotgun. But there are lever action rifles, such as the Henry 45-70, the Marlin 1894, the Rossi R92, and the Browning BLR.

I think its a very cool design that you cooked up there, but i think the mechanism is not folding the blades in but rather sliding out. If you look closely when Daud capture Corvo, he does not let go of the handle and still opens it. There are many more times you can see that kind of opening, for example the cinematic trailer for Dishonored 2 when Emily opens the blade in the Clockwork Mansion. So what confuses people about opening the vlade is that Corvo flips it in the air while opening, idk why, style points i guess...
Regardless, your concept looks way cooler than just sliding out, so keep up the good work! 😊

Instead of using something like a crank mechanism, you could fix the spine lock with the same part that holds the first part of the blade. That is, it should work something like this: the rod is in the handle -> the first part of the blade opens -> the rod enters it -> the second part opens -> the rod extends further and fixes the second part -> the first part and the rod are fixed simultaneously with a lock in the handle. In theory, the forward movement of the rod will be carried out due to the rotation of the sword or a stabbing movement, but there can be big problems with the friction of the rod, plus limiters are needed so that it does not fly out further than necessary.

Man your designs are really stepping up in complexity fast. Would not be shocked if the sword a few versions down has 58 moving parts and can somehow turn into a coffee machine. Even after it bends when you quench it lmao.
Also, got to mention I'm the type to get super demotivated and shelve projects once I realize I lack a specific tool to complete a specific job. So its really inspiring watching you use so much creativity when designing and working around the limitations of your (current) workshop and tool collection. Good luck on the next one!
the fact that youre capable of creating such swift and mechanically tidy gear to me is mind blowing, i am so so shamefully jelous of your skills that i feel like i need to rewire my brain. i admire your talent, please never stop to suprise me with your creativity
Just an idea for the folding and locking mechanism, but maybe keeping the locking mechanism as a single axis moving object residing along the back end of the handle may make it sturdier, where it pokes out about 1/2 an inch or so to stop the blade upon being extended. And once folded out can push the mechanism up into the blade before locking it down below in the blade somehow so it does not fall or give slack. And at the same time of locking it in place, having a sort of half loop turning on both sides of the blade to interact with pins on the lower blade to act as a blocker to keep the blade from moving forward and away from the locking mechanism. And if a rod is used again, perhaps grinding a slot into the top where it will nestle into the hook on the blade giving it extra rigidity near the tip.
For veneer, if it's made from actual wood, to bend it you want to soak it in boiling water for a while to make it pliable, then bend it on while still hot and clamp it, when it cools down it'll take shape of whatever you wrapped it around. Less stress, less mess :)

I would suggest a multiple scissors structure.
They use that in lifting cranes, and in my experience scissors can be pretty strong.
The "buttons" on the scissors can be decorated like stars.

This looks super cool though I prefer the last one. I do think you (and you specifically) can eventually make a folding sword that is robust enough to do test cutting with but I think that will need tons more prototyping and think time. I’m not sure how many other people can. Remember that any hinge in a knife makes it way less durable to impact forces and the fact that you’ve gotten a new design to function this well is a huge win.

Thw folding is soooo cool. Honestly, cooler than the Dishonored sword has always been in my head - I always saw it as more of a two-stage gravity knife, with a sturdy metal middle stage that works more like the body of say a box cutter, and wasn't really sharpened and mostly just served to extend the bladed end stage out to make the whole thing sword length. That would probably be fine, you don't really need the lower portion of the blade to be sharp in a dueling sword.
The handle was just going to be a bigger gravity knife handle, with some mechanism foe locking the whole thing in place, probably some sort of internal folding bracing rod like this, or maybe it woudl sit offset until extended, at which point it would be deflected into place, and it would all be held rigid and in lock with the force of the grip. The whole thing would probably need some force to be extended, which would be the purpose of the twirl, while just releasing the grip (or just one half of the scissor design) would release the lock and allow the whoel thing to collapse back together.
You would still have the lever-force warping like he had, where the impact of striking with the edge would apply force to the casing that held it in place, which would occur mostly in two ways: an attqcking strike and a defensive deflection. The former would have to be mitigated with training, disciplining one's attacks to make sure cutting strikes are directed to areas of least resistance (which a master assassin would want anyway) while the second source could be mitigated by focusing on more intense deflecting of blows using the lower stage of the blade, which could recess into the handle and thus experience roughly the striking lever force of a tang.
All that said, a "box cutter inside a gravity knife" is a lot less cool than THIS!
That would make a fucking hell of a movie prop sword. Bad guy just pulls this out of no where.
Having plans or blue print will help a lot. Your on the right path. Internalize your bolt mechanism. use a cable and spring in the portion closest to your palm.

Maybe design the rod into the grip so when the blade folds out it would either spring into the blade or let it "float" into the blade with the use of gravity, maybe then you could make the end blade also have the channel for the rod.
A second design possibility is having a locking mechanism at the tip of the middle blade held inside with a spring, and when you push the rod from the grip into the middle blade it would then stick into the end blade holding it in place more securely and still saving some space in the design.

The quench flame is because you lifted in a hollow piece of metal vertically.
What that does is create a pocket of oil that can't circulate, effectively burning/vaporizing it to some degree, which then causes a chain reaction with any other residual smoke/vaporized oil when the part is entirely quenched.
Definitely won’t be doing that again 😄

I would put 2 industrial magnets into the handle with the option of turning the polarity of the one imbedded in the handle to attract or repel the one on the end piece of the sward pushing it open or puling it closed.

Incredible! Perhaps a spring loaded spine would work better than a pushrod actuated spine, like how a folding umbrella uses the force of retraction to reset its spring for the next extension. Or maybe this would allow for a bolt-action sword?
I have an idea to fix the curving problem you have with the blade. As I mentioned last time, the issue is that you are basically making a katana blade with the whee and some of the blade cooling at different rates. I don't actually know if this will properly fix the issue, but what if you harden each piece separately and then weld them together. I know welding a blade like that could mess up the temper but, if done right it shouldn't mess with the temper much. This way you can make the blade straight like you need and hopefully keep it hard.

I actually got a few ideas how to fix this
I think the easiest solution is by basing it on the MK1
you have a spring loaded pin or rod in the first blade(the one closest to the handle) with the spring pushing towards the handle, when the 2th blade is locked with the "weak" lock it lines up an opening for the pin to lock in to, upon fully locking the 1st blade it forces the pin against a face pushing the locking pin in to the 2th blade
I think a simpler locking mechanism would be better. Like a spring loaded dead bolt in the handle that pushes a rod in the middle section of the sword upwards locking all the segments in place when unfolded but also it sword the be split up allowing it to folded. Or have the spring pre loaded so when it unfolds, it could unhitch the bolt launching it into the locked position pushing everything forward to lock then to unlock the sword you just preload the spring again.

I feel like for a future mechanically successful folding blades, it is going to require not only tighter tolerances, but more so on rail mechanisms without any play. Where the actual mechanism only allows for the parts to move in the desired path and not falling out of line. So every mechanism will need to be self contained and actuating.
Which obviously is a lot more difficult to actually smith/forge and machine, but its likely the only way to make a reliable folding mechanism that also functions as a blade once deployed.
I could understand why you wouldn't want to if you're trying make your own design solely yourself, but you could also look at and try to emulate similar mechanisms in existing mechanical devices that exist and similarly function.
I also don't know all the tools you do and do not have at your disposal, but I think the most valuable tool to make it work will be the actual design process. As you can better tailor make it to and design around any of your own restrictions or limitations. The best way to actually do so, would likely be using some cad software and physics simulations.
That way you can rapid prototype and fix any glaring or unforeseen issues with within the design that were not as apparent during the conceptualizing of said original design.
Needing to be careful that any parts you design in cad are actually within your ability to produce within your own shop. Then as soon as you seem to have a functional model that moves fluidly, interlocks and behaves as expected. Then it should just be a matter of reproducing said parts as faithfully as possible and it should ideally function as intended, without any obvious mechanical issues that could not be easily foreseen and prototyped out of the design.
Without having to actually produce all said parts, just to find out the design won't work as expected.
On another note using those cad files could also open the door for more projects beyond what you and your shop have personally available.
Such as a follow up video with very precise cad prototyped that mechanically functions perfectly, then hiring either a local or online fabrication shop to produce extremely precise components that all fit together with incredibly tight tolerances and see how much better of a design and form factor you're able to produce based on your ability to design and not just your resources to fabricate.
You could even extend a challenge to the online smithing community to see if they can either take your cad designs and how well they can fabricate it as is or even improve upon or make their own, all within the same general form factor or prompt.
Would be a really interesting test of both design, forging and or machining skill. I would be especially interested in seeing how other craftsmen and content creators can try and produce such mechanisms in completely alternate ways of fabrication, such as using super high end mills or machining equipment, maybe even using 3d printed plastic or metal components as apposed to actually forging said parts.
I also imagine it would be a really fun project for the community and go a long way towards promoting your own content.
As you clearly put a ton of effort into your content and really deserve the recognition for it. I mean the fact that you made that whole Cowboy Bebop intro on content most wouldn't have put much editing or visual effects of any kind into at all. So its really a testament to your artistry for both your craft and the content you make showing off your creations.
Love to see someone make the two-piece interlocking Kurgan's sword from Highlander.
Have you tried taking a page out of frame and or liner lock folding knife designs? the tolerances would be a pain, but then the blade sections would support each other using spring tension, locking joints and detents. using something like the IKBS ball bearing system would let it be incredibly smooth. Overall rigidity wouldn't be incredible, and re-folding would be a pain, but deployment would be fast and have satisfying locking action/sounds.
I’ll have to try that but so far I thought the leverage of that tip segment would be too much for a liner/frame lock. At least one that could still be disengaged with just your thumb 😄
I think if you just had the hinges fold the opposite way of the original, so that the blade tip folds up into position instead of down, then you could use a locking plate mechanism much easier that way than redesigning the whole thing.

Have you tried a scissor/pantograpy style linkage? Those can get a lot of movement from a bit of rotation and can be very stiff once expanded.
If it works it would removed the need for slides since it would all be interconnected.

you can use steel hardening powder (
Potassium hexacyanidoferrate(II) or by the nam of Potassium ferrocyanide) to harden the softer parts afterwards, but beware of cyanide fumes. should only be used in good ventilated places or outside.
I was planning on designing a folding sword. Cool to see someone else made one.
I will suggest again using intermeshed gears at hinges with a cam design to push the spine of the blade into lock positions.
Gearing would ensure timing is perfect and cam ensures simple actuation of the spine deployment.
i would love to see this full finished project. i loved that blade from the game and to see someone working to make it a reality is pretty awesome
You could put a cord attached to some way to tighten it real quick like a slide lock mechanism to throw a piece of steel flat on the sides and wider to lock in instead because if he was actually to try to defend yourself with that little bit thin thing holding it it's just going to have bend back on you
