    The original was a bead blast finish, that rusted horribly. I’m glad they changed the finish.

    I want to stress a point of caution.
    Cold Steel Spartans had a blade steel change in their production until now. Initial models had Aus8 steel, that was bead blasted. The problem with that choice was that Aus8 steel once bead blasted becomes porous, so blades rusting was quite common. Cold Steel responded to this by switching to Aus10 steel stonewashed.
    So you may across old and new models, that doesn't mean the old ones are counterfeits.

    I own both and the difference is noticeable when you're handling them. The plastic handles on the original are much denser, sturdier and higher quality. The fit and finish is much better, and the steel is higher quality. The fake is worth $15 but it's a toy compared with the original. I originally bought the copy because it was so inexpensive. I liked the design so much i bought an original and I'm glad i did. The real one is worth the extra expense if you're planning to use it.

      Those CS fakes are pathetic. Lynn Thompson prided himself on the superior quality and toughness of ColdSteel knives unlike the competition. ColdSteel put their knives through a CRAZY torture test no other knife could survive. Lynn Thompson cared about the ColdSteel brand.

    I have an old model of the Spartan and all that is said here is true but the Cold steel logo on the blade is like the counterfeit one.

    I’m torn if mine is real or not. Mine has Cold Steel on the clip but other things look legit.
    I think I have an older model. Mine doesn’t have the steel type on the blade either.

    When you take the scale off one side the difference is huge. Your fake has a crappy excuse for a Triad Lock. That's where the dangerous part is because it is a sorry excuse and can be the reason you're missing a digit.
    Buy the real one.

    I think I saw a counterfeit at a flea market about a month ago. It appeared to have the same type of blade on the counterfeit you have. Next time I go I’ll have to look at it again. It was only $40, so I’m about 99% certain it was a fake. The guy also had Benchmade knives that were extremely low priced at $50 to $60. I’m pretty sure those were counterfeits too. They had boxes in mint shape so it’s unlikely he was selling used knives and didn’t know what he had.

    Mine also has. CTS The small circle trademark R then BD1 on the base of the blade. I believe it's a very early issue.

    Where did you pick up the counterfeit? I have noticed some suspiciously cheap Cold Steel knives on Amazon lately.

      It’s in the works! I put the content together yesterday for the third entry into the 100 Weird Knives celebration, and thereafter I have enough weird knives “saved up” for at least a further four episodes. I’m hoping to have an update out before mid-May.

    hey wait a second! are you absolutely sure the fake one isnt legit? Cold Steel got bought out a couple years ago by GSM outdoors and changed some of their Branding. is it possible that the fake one is just an older version? the Spartan has been around for years right?

    • @JJJinks
      @JJJinks  Год назад

      The fake one cost less than $10, and the legit one was $70-something. I think based on price alone (and that I found it on wish.com) the fake one is likely not genuine. But if it were, it would be consistent with the expected decline in quality standards that normally follow those kinds of acquisitions.

      the counterfeit one is trying to look like the knife when it was made 10 years ago or so. Look at a review of this knife from that time and it looks the same. They changed the blade from aus8a to aus10a and did the stone wash to prevent rusting.
