I'll take this course. Have taken a few under my real name, not the pseudonym here. Sometimes go through the lectures twice, taking notes the second time if I couldn't the first, then take the quiz.
Have been listening to the Federalist Papers while working - falling deeper in love with our founders' work and genius, and our country and constitution. It is all truly good, very good.
Thanks for all the opportunity for genuine learning. At 71 next week, I feel like a college kid, though a bit less rambunctious.
    Best to all at Hillsdale.

LL, I'm a 71 yr old carpenter with high school ed.
I looked them up. Will look into it and try to give them a read. They had some valid concerns and will be interested to see how they were stated.
I understand looking at our Gov today, corrupt and bloated and inefficient, you could be very critical.
Still think the Constitution was the best answer, but I will read them. May take a bit, I'm under a heavy reading load and on a couple of projects.
      Maybe by Christmas.
Appreciate the reply and challenge to thinking.

The South was largely Anti because its economy was agricultural,, while the Federalists were Northern and industrial. I'm of the opinion that these fundamental differences in political outlook were very much at the core of the conflict between the states.

Thanks LL, that analysis is above my paygrade. Can't remember that part of the course, vecchiaia (Italian for old age).
Took a quick look but will have to wait, unless you can send me a link where I can read online or maybe a book title of the papers. There were 80 and yes, some well know names.
I finished the Gulag this year, reading simply done books on The Great War and Magna Carter, and A Sword Over the Nile by Adele Guindy, a long an thorugh history of the Copts.
Also one I'm breezing through is Rules for Radicals by Alinsky (with the motivation of "know your enemy"). As I'm in MA so no shortage of criticism of our country among a younger group of friends, 30's - 40's.
Got to run, have a good week.

Here is an interesting problem for the Hillsdale class -- How does one live Aristotle's virtue ethics fully if you are a CIA operations officer whose job involves intentional self-misrepresentation and frequent telling of lies or falsehoods not only to people you recruit as agents, but also to your own friends and family?

    • @sixty7ford
      @sixty7ford 3 года назад +1

I think that is a personal problem and should only be considered from a perspective of whether you believe the country is founded upon sound principles. If you believe this to be true, you would be your own agent, not unlike James Bond. If you believe it is false, then you would have never asked the question.

@@1965radster Um well actually, having read both this and the Bible, it's quite apparent to me that even in the absence of the knowledge of the one true God, humans can still achieve righteousness. In Addition, having read them both, I find very little that Aristotle says that contradicts the words or the Spirit of the Bible. That which does can be discarded without harming the truth of what he says, much of which is not harmful to life as a Christian, but beneficial. Why else do you think our founding fathers (the vast majority of whom were Christian) studied and encouraged the study of the classical thinkers as well as the Bible. As Christians we are called to proclaim truth and to charge into the darkness to reveal the world for what it is, ignoring the teachings of those whose analysis of the world supports and uplifts the Bible's is shortsighted and self destructive.
