I recently bought Castle of Illusion on Master System having never played the Mega Drive version and was told by the shopkeeper that its better than the Mega Drive version. From what I've played its a really creative fun Platformer with solid controls :) I find the Sega Master System to be a very underrated system in general
Great video...I make sega soundtracks btw check my channel, i have this on my master system top 10 cuz my genesis top 10 has no room for this...so sms 10 is this, alien 3, robo cop, sonic in monster world, Alex kid in shinobi, raster, r type, phantasy star, after burner, double dragon and so much more...Genesis is sor, sonics, vectorman, shinobi 3, comix zone, beyond oasis, virtua racing 🏎 etc new releases for 2022 coming ;)
I agree 100% with your review. Until recently I actually had no idea they were different. I grew up playing the 8 bit and got a Sega Mini Genesis to play it again only to discover it’s the 16 bit and completely different. Having played both I have to say 8 bit is just so much better. It focuses on gameplay and level design, while the 16 bit felt like it was trying to show off the techs “prowess” which has made it age very badly.
Ive never played the Genesis version. Only on the master system. But even just from looking at gameplay footage I cannot help but feel like the 8bit version looks better overall. With that said I do like all the extra detail on the stages of 16bit version. Its a special little gem.
Wow! This was really nostalgic for me, I absolutely loved castle of illusion, and pretty sure I played it on all sega systems, I also had an Atari Lynx, I used to think I had it hard when I was younger, but when I look back at the gaming systems I’ve owned, all be it some of the pre-owned, I actually had it pretty good :D
there was a simpsons game i think it was on the snes. where you had to capture mice in several stages. using pipes and stuff to make paths. it was really fun.
Speaking of Genesis vs. Master System games, I'm in the minority when it comes to the Sonic games, much preferring the SMS ones to the Genesis ones. One reason is somewhat similar to something you mention about this game, in that in the SMS Sonic games you have a reason to explore the levels (to find the emeralds) or rings in Chaos to get the emeralds. In the genesis games there's no reason to explore and it's kind of boring I feel. The last Sonic game I played of that era was Triple Trouble for game gear which I have on Sonic Gems for gamecube and that game is great too. Can't really say I'm a fan of any of the Sonic genesis games, but my fav Sonic game of all time is Sonic CD, where you could do a lot in each stage, time travel, destroy things in the past, etc. The genesis ones felt too linear to me.
As a kid I loved Sonic on the Genesis, but you're right - the SMS games are slower paced and more about exploration. Sonic CD has always been a mystery to me. I've tried it many times but always just feel lost. I've heard how amazing it is from tons of people so eventually I'll have to give it another shot. I really need to start reviewing retro games again. Just not enough time in the week...
There are many things which I love in Sonic CD, one thing being like the Master System Sonics was the exploration, such as destroying the generators in the past to make a good future. I feel if you like the Master System games, you'd probably like that. I'm from NZ, so we got the European/Japanese soundtrack on our Sonic CDs for Mega CD, which adds to the overall awesomeness of the game. My gamecube version has the US soundtrack, which is not bad, but I don't get that sense of greatness like the other soundtrack. You could try playing with the other soundtrack if you have one of those new versions of the game. But yeah man, this was a great video. It's good to see a review about a Master System game that brings out positives in comparison to its Genesis counterpart. It was an underrated console with some quality games.
The Master System version is indeed the better version. I like Mickey on the Mega Drive, yet i don't like the fact that there are really not many hidden things to discover. Same problem with World of Illusion
World of Illusion was so disappointing. I remember my parents buying that for me, bringing it home and my best friend and I played it for the next two hours (I think) and beat the game. We were shocked how fast we finished and how easy it was. Beautiful graphics aside, we were so disappointed...
Nice video. I love Castle of Illusion on the Genesis, one of my favorite platformers on the system. I actually like the slow methodical pace of Mickey and the jumping, and I think the level design does a nice job keeping the controls in mind. Unlike most 90s platformers which tried to rip off Sonic the Hedgehog (like Zool...) Castle of Illusion feels unique. I would really like to try out the SMS version someday, looks like a solid platformer as well.
+implantgames Aw dude thanks for watching! If you like slow methodical platformers, have you ever played Toki Going Ape Spit on the Genesis? It's slow but somehow still very twitchy.

Completely agree. Absolutely love the 8-bit game. Never liked the 16-bit one all that much though and it's for pretty much exactly the reasons you say.
I believe the Genesis version is first, and video game magazines said (as I just found out) that the SMS version is better. Though they are so different, they can be viewed as separate games. Where is all the fun stuff with chucking jars etc?!
Great video! I was lucky enough to have both as a kid, and I never really liked the Master System version until I got older. The 16-bit Castle is still my favourite, but 8-bit Castle is great too. I really, really need to get around to finishing it one of these days. The only thing I don't like about the 8-bit Castle of Illusion games is ability to pick up and throw items. All 3 games in the 8-bit series feature it, and I've never been too fond of it. Still, great games, and great video! :)
I was thinking how can he say that the master system version is better of course the Genesis version is but when you brought up that little delay the jump my currently remembered all the frustration I felt not at first but in the second half of the game you're like just go a little faster damn it lol
the mastersystem mickey games are far superior to the genesis in gameplay. on the master system you can move quick and smooth and pick up and throw blocks in a unique charming way on the genesis versions micky is slow with a very awkward walk animation and you just wave a blanket and throw apples which is just too generic like every other platformer. Land of illusion imo is the best micky game on the mastersystem its similar to castle of illusion but the difficulty is just right that you can just flow through the game and enjoy it. its a true work of art in its look, feel and gameplay mechanics id argue one of the best of all time.
Dude this has gotta be one of those "Whichever one you play first" scenarios, I had the exact same reaction to you but in reverse. The Genesis version is one of my favorite games of all time and I recently tried the master system version and I HATE THE CONTROLS. The game feels so cheap and BRUTALLY difficult. I hate that the but slam controls are mapped to a different button, and picking up items is so annoying. I played for quite a while too and without save states I could barely progress, it was like cuphead levels of difficulty for me.

Agree
How wild to find the channel I trust most for VR answered a question I had about a game I was just gonna start on my Vita. Great video Bryan 🙂

I loved the master system version, still great today! Agree the Mega Drive version is no where near as good!

Krusty's Fun House, if I remember correctly!
yeah :D good times!

I had the same "problem". I also finished it in like 2 hours, the same day i bought the game.
It still has it charms though

Sorry for responding to your very old comment but did you end up playing the SMS version of the game? If so, which did you prefer? Thanks :))

great video. at the time I only had a Master System and a friend lent me this game. have really good memories of it.
If you only had a SMS, this was one of the best platformers you could play.
Thanks for watching!
Indeed, I have a big collection of its games nowadays. It's actually the only system for what I massively collect :)
Completely agree. Absolutely love the 8-bit game. Never liked the 16-bit one all that much though and it's for pretty much exactly the reasons you say.
100% accurate. 8bit CO is just more fun and immersive😊

Finally someone said it!
And I'll say it again! :D
Master system version is better more colourful and fun, however megadrive version is really good too. Enjoy both as both are classic.
