  • Welcome to the most detailed galaxy map ever created. Enjoy your flight through 14.7 Million Galaxies. All of these galaxies are in their correct XYZ coordinates as seen from Earth. The galaxies have been given proxy images and the scale has been adjusted by 5x for aesthetics.
    Soundtrack by Ryan Lofty at Future Vega Music

    14.7 million galaxies is a miniscule number against the trillions upon trillions+ of galaxies in our universe. What portion of the sky does this cover? A couple of degrees?

    Can you explain what you mean by "the scale" has been adjusted by 5x, and how that adjustment affects the video? Scale being distance? Size? Brightness? Hamsters per square lepton? Thx!

    • @FiskePlanetarium
      @FiskePlanetarium  4 месяца назад

      Just the size of the galaxy images. They would be 5x smaller IRL. They would be very tiny dots on the screen, so we amplified their image size to help the aesthetics. Galaxies are VERY far away from each other. The position data remains the same.

    I'd love to see this more clearly but the video quality is terrible, even bumping up to 8k

    • @StefanoBorini
      @StefanoBorini 5 месяцев назад +3

      I don't think they can do that much more than this. First, it's in 3d, meaning that the 8k resolution is basically across the whole sphere, and therefore the resolution of what is in your field of view is nominally much less. Having 8k in your FOV instead would require a bajillion k for the whole sphere. Second, it's a lot of dots on a uniform background. The amount of high frequency information means the youtube compression algorithm is literally crying and begging for mercy, and it shows. The only way to get a better rendering is to create a movie that nobody can stream of even download on their hard drives, because it will be IMMENSE.

    Impressive!? Yes, I guess so, in terms of displaying some sense of what's what and where in the universe, at least in proxy form. But how about a little informative commentary to go with the fancy graphics display rather than that horrible sound track? I turned the sound down to be almost inaudible but kept it on just in case there suddenly might be some explanation rather than just noise. As is, this isn't a "map" of anything - it's just a noisy display of a gigantic cloud of sprinkles.
