    I'll never forget what the Legends of Grimrock devs said regarding making a sequel. They made 2 because they thought they could make enough meaningful improvements on 1, but after 2, they felt like they couldn't improve on the game more than they had, so they just ended the series. I wish this outlook was more common.

      @@literallylaw Absolutely! No unfortunately I was small when the first Star Wars came out, but I loved the shooty pew pew space fights for my age at the time XD that said however, even though I haven’t grown up with it being my favorite series, I know enough well how it devolved through time. Same with Star Trek, and rinse and repeat with other franchises. Apparently G.I Joe is still a thing, it’s like bro….I get it, they were once awesome back in the day, but would you rather watch your favorite things go out in a blaze of glory? Or watch it age like a bloated corpse in the summer sun😅💀I’d rather have the latter, lol. Speaking of which, makes me sad watching how Titanfall went downhill too 😭 man I feel like I need to take a shower and escape for a minute bro 😅…….

      God. Yeah, I almost forgot that they fucked Star Trek too with Picard. Shit really do be bleak.
      Titanfall deserved better. It being taken from what was essentially the most revolutionary Multiplayer FPS series of all time, to becoming another fucking battle royale is an actual crime against reason.
      Yeah, I might need a shower too after being reminded that everything I've ever loved has been butchered by the bastards up top.

    Loved the video man, like you said the famous quote of “all good things must come to an end”, this is so accurately true, to every single thing we loved and grew up with, and I would argue that most others out there would agree. Even my grandparents had this problem with things they once’s loved and grew up with, they got sick of seeing re-runs of their shows and stuff they grew up with, and when things got “resurrected” they were sorely disappointed. Wish gems we loved would just be left alone to age like a fine wine, and not sour soiled milk on a hot summer afternoon because of greedy shady companies 💀

      Glad you ended up enjoying this one as well :)
      Yeah, my parents always complain when they see another sequel to things they grew up with as well. I think it's just logical that we would like things that feel complete.
      Like, we don't want something to go forever because it means we'll always lack a truly satisfying conclusion. But as you correctly point out, so long as greedy corporations continue to exist, nothing is sacred.

    • @A90sChick
      @A90sChick Год назад +3

      I absolutely resonate with that. That’s also how I felt about the Mass effect “franchise” and I know it’s not gaming, but the lord of the rings and the hobbit franchise movies. It’s good to just let them stay as they are. We didn’t want “rings of power” fans even strongly let them KNOW that….they still spat on Tolkiens grave. And what happened to the mass effect trilogy was a mess, it’s a gem, but after “Andromeda” and watching the recent “teaser trailer” of the mass effect universe continues……I’m like no. Please no…..y’all did enough damage to it 🤦🏻‍♀️

    • @literallylaw
      @literallylaw  Год назад +2

      God, how are you hitting literally every single thing I agree with? 😂
      The original Mass Effect trilogy, with a bit of ignoring how meh the ending to three was, would honestly imo have gone down as an absolute classic if they'd have left the IP well enough alone after. Those games were such incredibly solid pieces of fiction. Every character was so well written, had an arc, most of the crew were even iconic for the entire medium.
      Also a massive LOTR nerd, so yeah, what they did with Rings of Power was just fucking insulting. Then again, it's Amazon, I hated them long before that point and all that's achieved is I hate them even more now, but they made it more personal. Tolkien rolls in his grave.
      I think so long as unchecked greed and the potential of corporations squeezing every last penny they can out of existing IPs remains the norm, nothing we love or enjoy will ever remain untainted forever. The sludge of the capital machine covers every inch of reality until it consumes it all.

      Mario is Nintendo’s mascot game character. His presence is the franchise more than him recycling like the same shooter over and over again. I think Mascot games are a special case. You can pop a mascot in a lot of things…from a platformer to a racing game to a big brawl game like Smash bros and yeah it’s kind of a franchise but since he’s an immortal mascot the lore is loose at best and being generally tweaked and reinvented per game.

    This may be a hot take, but I love videos on negative topics, especially yours, so feel free to make as many as you like.
    It really is a shame, for me the ones that hurt my soul the most are Assasins's creed and Battlefield. I still remember feeling so damn excited for Bf1, it was one of the triple A games I can count with my hands I HAD to buy day 1, especially to play with a good old friend. Dude we played that game for hundreds of hours I don't even know how, Bf1 was so fucking fun man, and so was 4, played that one a lot with my friend as well. And that's funny because, today I kinda see those games as generic, you know, average military FPS, now that I started playing a wide variety of games over the years, i'm sure i'll enjoy them if I go back and play them, even if by myself, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the exact same experience it was all those years ago.
    Assasin's creed, ugh, it hurts man, for me that franchise ended with black flag, which is also my favorite, I don't even remember the games past that point, that's how irrelevant they are to me. But oh boy, Assasin's creed origins, i'm sorry if this will offend someone, but to me that game and all past that are fucking dog shit man. Listen, I like rpg's, but mixing that with my immersive adventure game I was used to, to the point where i'll go to a zone and the enemies kill me in one hit and are pretty much immortal? No.Fucking.Thanks, not with assasin's creed, is this childish? I don't know, maybe, but I just hate the direction they took man, that franchise could have perfectly ended with black flag for me, MAYBE syndicate.
    I'm not gonna lie, I used to have that mentality of not wanting anything I like to end, but I eventually realized that, not only is life like that, but it's also the right thing to do. It's sad to see your favorite franchise end yes, but it's the right thing to do when the time is right and there's no more point in continuing.

    • @literallylaw
      @literallylaw  Год назад +3

      Loved reading this just cause it tells me my video invoked a lot of the same emotions that I was feeling when making it. I agree, Black Flag was the peak of AC and I liked the series less and less after.
      I did the same thing with BF1 even, bought it for myself and a friend day one and we loved it.
      But yeah, a lot of people prefer the negative videos more, I've seen that in analytics lol, I'll try and keep a mix on the channel, cause I can think of a lot of crap about this industry to complain about lol.

    I know people complain about Nintendo putting some of their franchises on ice because they want a new game in the series, but I think because of that it gives them time to come up with ideas for when they bring them back. Metroid and Pikmin are great examples of this, they’re franchises that took a break (or multiple) only to come back with new masterpieces chock full of original ideas. Even their bigger franchises follow this trend to a lesser extent because we only get big new Mario and Zelda games once every few years.

    At this point I'm 100% convinced that CoD is secretly funded by the US army to get new recruits that is why they pump them out every year, just looking at the campaigns and how they twist the realities to make the Americans look like the good guys always is more than enough propaganda to make people enlist, take a look at how MW 2019 twisted the real life highway of death incident into their favor.
    Also, some games deserve to lay dormant until enough new refreshing ideas can be implemented into the game.

      I mean, you're not that far off. They absolutely have deals with the military to get a look at their equipment and model weapons etc. So they CAN'T really depict them negatively because they'll have less access. The US military have always done that, did it with the new Top Gun too, by playing along with media, they get to ensure they're never depicted badly.

    I would argue that Deus Ex: Human Revolution even though it was well received by the media and fans in retrospective the game was undercooked for it's scope. Thats why in 2013 they released a Director's Cut with quite a few changes. This being from the perspective of more of a purist in terms of immersive sims.
    Human Revolution had to be released and marketed on the the mainstream consoles at the time and this constrained the gameplay design a lot more than the original which was first developed for the PC and then ported to PS2 with quite a few limitations.
    Prey and Dishonored being better examples of modern immersive sims done right that also work on consoles.

    • @literallylaw
      @literallylaw  Год назад

      I'd say you're right that's it's a lot less of an immersive sim than the original.
      But that wasn't my point. I don't think a sequel has to be exactly like it's predecesor, in fact that's one of the things I despise about franchises.
      Human Revolutions was what it was. The reason I loved it was because it felt like at the very least they had an idea and a story they actually wanted to tell in the universe. One that remained thematically cohesive with the established world.
      It wasn't just using the name of the franchise for the sake of it. Or pumping out a reskinned clone.

  • @badass6300
    @badass6300 Год назад +2

    I agree with most of what you said, so in contrast I will go on the defense: if they are going to keep making similar games, it only makes sense that they use established IPs, this absolutely kills the identity of the IP over time, but at the same time it (almost) guarantees that their 75-250 million dollar development budget will be made up for if the IP alone sells like hot cakes.
    For example I disagree to a point with CoD, with MW2019, they vastly improved the gameplay, mechanics, and for those who care graphics were much needed. Before that Ghosts improved all three again. The problem is that people who casually watch and/or play them, won't notice it very much.
    Another problem is that there are 3 studios that make a CoD game each and they basically have a cycle, and within a cycle, the games are extremely similar. I would say CoD goes like this: CoD1 => CoD2 => CoD4 => Black Ops 1 => MW3 => Ghosts => Infinite Warfare => MW2019 => MW2 2022, so out of 18+ CoD games (less than)only half of them are actual improvements, the other ones in between are just filler, though CoD3 tried some cool things. Now for sure story/campaign wise, that is cheap to redo the Modern Warfare series, no doubt about it.
    EA sports games have been trash for ages and they on purpose make them a complete mess, so that there is hope next year would be better. There is alway something(usually a lot) wrong about each one.

New ideas are risky and people will stick with the memory of what they liked before over trying something new. Nostalgia will have people buying the ‘modern’ reskin over and over again. Until the people are willing to let a good thing be a good thing on it’s own and truly judge a sequel on it’s own merits and not ‘being a fan of the franchise’ this will continue to happen.

    Now franchises like doom and wolfenstein and other legacy franchises like half life id argue still have so much wiggle room in terms of mechanics innovation and not to mention the evolving/continuation of the story.

    I agree with this.
    Halo should´ve been considered being done after the Bungie era, and I already feel that ODST wasn´t really needed either. Playing Reach and 1-3 feels like a complete, closed Story that didn´t need further games after it, and no RTS and Twin Stick Shooters on the side either for that matter.
    Call of Duty having 2 sub-series called Modern Warfare without the franchise having any downtime at all feels like a practical joke.
    Assassin´s Creed did everything it needed, and really could do, once they released Black Flag. And I´m saying this despite generally liking Rouge and fixed Unity, but those games didn´t bring anything new to the table. Didn´t touch the franchise for a while until Valhalla, I enjoyed that one a lot during what is essentially the Intro. When I arrived in England it all fell apart for me. The game just doesn´t have the Story or Gameplay to really support such a massive game.
    As for Sports games, and I include the yearly F1 games here too, I feel like those would benefit from ditching yearly releases in favour of being a content Platform. Like i.e. F1, the base Platform is free, with a Team or two and a Track included as a Demo of Sorts that you can use for Time Trial and Single Race, if you don´t own any content, you can buy the most recent Season (Cars / Teams and Tracks) at what regular full price would be and you Unlock all the game modes. From there you can then buy older Seasons at a lower price as a content pack, with Retro Cars and Tracks (like i.e. a car from the 70´s and a Track from that era) being additional purchases. If you already own at least one full Season, future ones should be available for cheaper because you really just getting the new Cars and maybe a Track or Two at that point. That way they would still have a yearly release and players would end up with a game that, at this point, would allow them to play a Career Mode over 13 Seasons with all the different cars and tracks used over these years.

    This was a great video, but there's an even worse issue you missed, when developers exclusively rely on a single IP for money. It's similar in practice and theory to what you said, but the difference between Ubisoft and Bethesda is that while Ubisoft fell off and are milking the AC series, at the very least they're still making "new" games. Bethesda, as well as rockstar, have literally just milked the same games (Skyrim and GTA V) for over 10 years and TWO WHOLE CONSOLE GENERATIONS while completely neglecting to create anything new.
    They know people are desperate for anything new when it comes to those series and instead of delivering on that and pleasing the fanbase, instead they just crap out a bunch of shitty spin off games like elder scrolls blades or all the dlc for GTA online. Both developers went from publishing new games every 2-4 years, to only releasing 1 game in the last console generation, even though they're currently richer and more famous than ever before. Granted in rockstars case it's a bit better since RDR2 is still the most technologically advanced and detailed game to date while fallout 4 is well, fallout 4, but it still sucks to see.

After all, who wanted more Halo games to come out? Microsoft of course, its what Capital does, make more of the product that made them bank.

      I can see why you might have been annoyed by that. But here's my hot take, 343 should never have existed as a studio to begin with. Microsoft creating a studio solely to deal with their Halo IP was a terrible decision.

But that doesn't change the fact I don't see a purpose for it to exist at all. The IP should've been shopped around to good development studios and Halo should have been allowed to be taken in a different direction that's actually creative.

    AAA companies have the budget to make incredible things but a small indie dev can do better than them imagine if they made a game like kenshi but bigger and even better they could but they would never be able to come up with such a cool concept. Because they don’t do new things they play it 100% safe
    All they do is soulless games you can’t even have games that require skill these days.
    They don’t even see their classic games as their legacy like epic games they see it as an obsolete product they don’t even want to sell it for some reason it’s crazy all they want to be associated with is fortnite not unreal tournament they don’t even want to finish their game and abandoned it completely not even letting the community finish it for them fk the fans right ?
    if it doesn’t make them millions a day it’s not worth it they don’t just want to make enough money no they want all of it every single drop every microscopic little particle until there’s nothing.

      Yeah, if triple A companies had vision instead of shareholders we'd live in a world with some of the greatest games of all time coming out. But indies have to play Atlas and carry this entire industry on their back now.
      But I wholeheartedly agree with you here. It's never been about profits, it's always been about ALL THE PROFITS. That's the heart of the problem, the greed of the assholes at the top is so out of control that nothing but the collapse of this industy will stop it.

    I absolutely agree that halo stopped getting good at reach. While I love older halo games, everything past reach is ass on a platter so they can just milk their players’ wallets.

    • @literallylaw
      @literallylaw  Год назад +1

      Yeah, like, there was no reason for the franchise to continue. Because clearly there wasn't a good enough idea, since 343 constantly retconned it every game. 😭

    • @Bobbybobberton21
      @Bobbybobberton21 Год назад +1

      @@literallylaw Exactly, the 343 drama is a while can of worms in and of itself. But in any case, he muddied the good name of a once beloved franchise. I haven’t even bothered to waste my time ever since halo 5. They could of left it how it was. I don’t give a damn if younger generations get to experience the “most realistic” or “most engaging” new halo every fucking second.
      Imagine if valve made games like portal and tf2 have a new reimagined version of the same game over and over. It would lose its charm and nostalgia that makes them fun even today. That’s where valve shines bright, for the most part, their sequels are unmatched in terms of making them feel new and exciting while keeping a premise.
      I think you should have some sort of unscripted podcast along with your videos. Just have a basis for each episode and talk for a while. Talking about all the ups and downs of the industry with people. Of course I know there isn’t much free time, just a suggestion :)

    In terms of Halo, i definitely think they need to let the story rest.
    If they really *need* to add story alongside multiplayer, they could do a revamped version of Spartan Ops. Something not super heavy. Other than that, Multiplayer being relatively fun is the only saving grace.

    its sad to see games focus more about the money then creativity. if they just switch this formula they can actually make a good game and produce alot of money. Indie games are great at this because they aren't forced by some boss who hasn't even played a video game in his life to make a game that he wants.

    I think series are safe, so big publishers like it. However, they also kill all creativity and now are all stuck in a dead end. Assasins creed is killed, same with halo, MK, sports games, overwatch, mobas, CoD, farcry, GTA, Fallout, and likely more, as these spots are creatively bankrupt. Also, the people at the top don't understand games aren't a creative product, not a selling point. This leads to big studio fallout where they do the same thing because they assume people are numbers that when they win them once they can win them every time.

    I'm much more pro-franchise than you are, but my favorite franchise is the Touhou project, which is in A... uniquely good position, since it only needs to make enough money to support one guy and his family. It's well over 18 games in, over the course of a bit over 20 years, and the new games are still fresh and interesting. At least to me, I'm not sure how older fans feel, and many people think the newer characters are worse than the earlier ones.
