I've got one of those,W.E. Hill & Son's New Bond Street London
my violin is about a 126 years old. it was a gift I got from Christmas, it was once owned by a Filipino Soldier in world war 2, he was my mom's grampa, (not really blood related) I don't know about him, I've never seen a photo of him, but I was told that he was part of a simphony orchestra in the U.S.
anyway the violin's fin, the seam had open once, but I did a little reaserch and buy some cow hide, and i manage to fix it...

I play guitar and have built, repaired restored a small number over the years as an amateur - but there is something special about a violin in terms of sound, construction, design, the tools (especially thumb planes) etc etc ......... it's just relaxing and absorbing to watch the "whole deal" including the many theories and myths, the history, the romanticism of Cremona ........... the magical logged fungi eaten woods of the "magical" period of violin making - I dunno why, it just makes m'brain happy. Loving your vids, respect from U.K.

I think it is a absolutly brilliant idea for a video series!
I would also really love to see how Violins are made, so the next time you make an instrument it would be awesome if you could show some of the steps you go through. Not necessarily too detailed or giving away any possible masters secret ;)
I would just be interested in the general steps :)

A joy to watch and pain as well as my violin has been stuck in the shop for two months, for a varnish touch up, due to pandemic related issues and varnish drying times. Watching your videos gave me the courage to inlet the channel on a "violin" chinrest I fitted up to my viola. Very light Dremel and sandpaper work to clear the tailpiece. Wouldn't dream of messing with the actual instrument but fittings like a chinrest are cheap.

Hi Olaf! I recently started playing again after a 42 year break, I can't get enough of your videos! I started with a new-ish violin a Revelle 700 from 2015 (one of the nicer american imports from China). Then I stumbled across a 1902 Lyon & Healy in a guitar shop that I absolutely fell in love with, she has a carved scroll that is to die for. She was in bad shape (had a bass bar crack and needed the neck reset) but she's all fixed up now and sounds great. Do you believe that older violins sound better than newer ones? My two sound different but both of them are lovely. Maybe you could do a video on what people mean when they say an instrument is "dark" or "bright" or "clear" etc. Just to give us newbies an idea of what we're hearing when comparing instruments.

You probably get quite a few questions like this, with little time to answer them, but I would be most grateful for a few minutes of your time. :)
I have an old Skylark violin (MK005, full-size). My uncle gave it to me when I expressed interest in picking up violin in 5th grade orchestra. (Was sadly unable to continue in school orchestra past 6th, but I still play on occasion.) He claimed it was around 75-80 yrs old (this was back in 2003-2004 ish) but the label says 'People's Republic of China'. China didn't adopt that name until 1949, after their revolution. If it was made in that year, my instrument would be 71 *this* year, rather than the hundred some-odd I was told. Now, all of the research I have done has said that Skylarks are absolute junk, and I'm sure that most of them are. They wouldn't have that reputation otherwise. Mine does sound rather bad when strung with cheap steel strings (what instrument wouldn't?). But I switched to better quality strings, and it has a quite lovely sound. (It was the favored instrument of both of my teacher's to borrow for demonstrations when they didn't want to fetch theirs.) Even if I were to buy a higher quality violin, I would keep my Skylark and play it on a regular basis, out of sentiment if nothing else.
Anyway, my question is this: is there any way to find the correct age? There is no year listed on the label, and I forgot to ask the last luthier I took it to. (The family-run business was the only one that would service it. The other three I took it to suggested that I smash it/use it for kindling and tried to sell me one of theirs. They didn't even bother playing it... 🙄)
    Here's a couple pictures:

Have you ever worked on other instrument than violin? Like a classical/flamenco guitar? There is a luthier called Tom Blackshear who makes great flamenco guitar by using a technique he calls "fine-tuning", is there anything close to it in violin making?
    Nice video by the way!

Man, I feel so guilty but I just didn't have the time or money to do so. If anyone can give me a rough idea on how much it will cost, feel free to comment so I can start saving up for it. Thanks!

    I have a question..
Some guitars are black, brown, colored(acoustic)
Some piano are black, brown, white (accoustic)
However is there a reason why there are not much variety when in comes to violins,(acoustic)...

    • @Sadimal
      @Sadimal 4 года назад +2

The way that varnish affects the wood is by penetrating the wood. Varnish does affect the sound of the violin, allowing the vibrations of the wood to be slowed down which creates a richer sound. Varnishes are specially formulated to help the sound of the violin and are typically recipes passed down from one maker to the next.
Painting a piano doesn't affect sound unless you are painting the soundboard itself. Colored guitars are mainly a recent phenomenon and a colored varnish is used to create the color unless it's a really cheap guitar. Guitars are also typically mass produced and not handmade like most violins.

This actually makes me a little jealous, because I'm a flutist.
Wind instruments generally degrade over time, and now old baroque and classical flutes are unplayable. So, we have to play replicas of old instruments. There's a problem with that too though, all good instruments were played so much that they disintegrated, so all we have now are the mediocre instruments that would not have been played much.
