so if you click settings on the bottom left of the screen when on the Minecraft launcher it should say general account and about. make sure your on general and your see launcher settings the first setting should say Use beta version of the launcher make sure there's a tick at the start by clicking the green box and boom you now will have betas and maybe some alpha.

any tips on getting it to the newer versions without the chunks messing it up

The best way might be to go up in versions but keep making sure you load the chunks that are stamps world as its small and if you dont then when you update, the chunks will update on the stampy area aswell if that makes sense.

I would recommend going up a version and loading the world until you get to the latest but if you want you could go straight to the latest version

How do u update your world to the latest version

so go around the world and load the whole world in so you know you wont get any chunk errors then just update. The best way would probably be going up every couple of versions like 1.0 then 1.2 etc
