Great advice! I oftentimes find myself overthinking when put on the spot to dance that even grooving becomes difficult. But in reality, I should just stop thinking and have fun with the music!

    Dear Steezy,
Currently, I am pretty content with the way how I dance and pick up choreo, but what I'm lacking in A LOT right now is freestyling. I hear that when you freestyle often, you will eventually find your own style too. But it's like no matter how much I try, I can't seem to fully connect with the music, leading to me being confused whenever I freestyle and always feeling stressed out. I start to lose confidence. Whenever I am pushed into a freestyle circle, I just freeze up and I gradually start to lose connection with my body as well. I always feel intimidated and & I ALWAYS want my freestyle to look effortless and easy... but it's sooo hard for me. How do I "move" to the music? How do I become a better freestyler? THANK YOUU!!! :))

Foundations! Having a good understanding of techniques in different styles of dance gives you a book of moves / concepts to work with. When your body understands these outside of a set choreography to a set song, you can start moving more freely to music because your body has something to work with. People incorporate techniques like hits, rond de jamb, fix points etc. all the time in choreographies, and these techniques come from styles ranging anywhere from ballet to popping.

i can't really be very specific like what Michael said but i faced this problem before. The difference is i don't go to dance classes to learn the basic instead i started out self-learning until i pick up and gotten comfortable from a few basic from different styles so instead of moving on to learning choreography i started in free styling instead. I would said break your wall of confidence even tho you are frozen you should take a step ahead and bring out all you got in that circle. Listening to a lot of music also help in understanding the variation of it and helps you to understand more on different style of music and the feel to connect to it. Foundation comes after to help build the natural part in free styling where you would just dance without a care for the world. Lastly once you got into free styling, don't stop and constant free style especially during cypher session. I myself found out that constant free styling allows yourself to learn a lot of new thing and understand your limit. There will be a moment where you would black out and go crazy, that when your result of practice fully explode out. That it from me hahaha but i should also said it different for every dancer in this kind of approach, so it would't hurt trying right?

Jessica Vo I know exactly what you mean, and what helped me with this was just like freestyling at home in front of the mirror with no one around, to learn how to feel comfortable in my own body and just listen to the music and dance to it in your own way, do that a lot and you’ll start feeling more confident in front of others too. I’m still working on it but it’s always getting better! I hope I’ve helped :))

    YO that cookies shirt though..
I think this is probably the best tip I’ve heard about grooving. It’s a different mindset, don’t always think you gotta look dope. Just have fun and be carefree and the “looking dope” will follow! Yes, Darang! 💃❤️😭

There's professional dancers who started after 15! By example Lia Kim started at 17 and I think Kyle Hanagami started at 19
So you can become an amazing dancer too !

This was not helpful in anyway, the advise to loosen up was basically relax your body and be comfortable
