Some great books, only own a few so wrote them down to put on my to buy list. For those wanting a list of the books mentioned in the video: . The Creative Act: A Way of Being - Rick Rubin 2. On Photography - Susan Sontag 3. Magnum Streetwise - Magnum Photos 4. Think Like a Street Photographer - Matt Stuart 5. The War of Art - Steven Pressfield 6. Show Your Work! - Austin Kleon 7. Street Photography Now - Sophie Howarth & Stephen McLaren 8. How I Make Photographs - Joel Meyerowitz 9. Magnum Stories - Magnum Photos 10. Bystander: A History of Street Photography - Joel Meyerowitz & Colin Westerbeck
Thank you for such a rich, inspiring, and educational video! I want to pursue them all, but I will focus first on "Think Like a Photographer" and "Bystander - A History of Street Photography."
I have a few of these books including Bystander, which I have the paperback. But the hardcover version not only has a better looking cover to me, I noticed a few photos shown in the video that are not in the paperback book I have, including quotes on the sides of the pages.
A few more.names to add: Winogrand, Color, Ernst Haas - Color Correction, Saul Leiter - any book and Thomas Hoepke, his Italia black and white images are beautiful in terms of composition and light.
Not specifically street, but The Photographer's Playbook, Edited by Jason Fulford and Gregory Halpern is worth looking at. 307 assigments and ideas should be enough to get anybody out of a creative crisis or inspire.
Thanks for (yet another....) great video! As usual informative and inspiring. I'm dipping my toes in the waters of street photography - challenging. I have three Street books on my shelf that I explore: Joel Meyerowitz "Seeing Things. A Kid's Guide to Looking at Photographs" ("The moment of seeing is like waking up", "What you notice will reflect the way the world speaks to you, and only to you" JM - one could go on citing...:-); Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren "Street Photography Now"; and David Gibson "The Street Photographer's Manual".
Where to start? Meyerowitz-The Pleasure of Seeing, Herzog- Colour and Vancouver photos, Gruyaert - Morocco and most recent - Homeland, Webb- suffering of light. Vivian Maier - Colorwork, Alan Schaller - Metropolis, Guler - Istanbul and Sidewalk - Frank Horvarth, the last one's a hidden gem!
I have a few of these and was good to learn about the others . Joel M has a book called looking at photographs for kids. But I think we can all learn from it .
Thanks for sharing this, Tim! A couple of new ideas for my book shelf and brain. I have a couple of suggestions to consider. First - Sean Tucker's "The Meaning in the Making." It's not about photography specifically, but about the why of making art. Second is "Modern Color" by Fred Herzog. This one resonates with me as I find familiarity and inspiration in the photos. Cheers!
Creativity is a fluid component of our blood. It comes in waves and it ebbs and flows. So yes... There are times when it burns like fire and times when it's just not resonate within us.
Great video. Road to Seeing by Dan Winters had a big effect on me. More about the thoughts and process behind photography but would thoroughly recommend
I found "Bystander" to be difficult to read. I had to stop and look up words because I had no idea what they meant. I don't understand why some people have to write like that. I recently purchased "How I Make Photographs" by Joel Meyerowitz. I'm about half way through it. What I've learned so far is that I am an artist. Perhaps not a very good artist but still an artist. Kind of like your kids finger paintings. 😛 All these books I can get from the library. Thanks for the new reading list.
Another great video and insightful. I have the Bystander book, along with the Joel Meyerowitz "How I make Photographs" His section on the twin towers and his decision to document the scene for history was so incredible. If I put myself in that position, I would question is it right to take photos? Is it goolish and how do I look to others looking on? But I totally understand his reason and I hope that if I was in that position, I would do the same as Joel. My favourite street photographer is Saul Leiter and his book "All about Saul Leiter" is a stunning body of work.
Saved for Watch Later. Susan Sontag made a ton of comments that I referenced for the video I did on Diane Arbus and I found that my viewpoints did not align with her whatsoever, which has kept me from going further in on her other ideas.
I bought that first book and returned it. Absolute waste of money Imo. Magnum streetwise is my favourite photography book and I recommend it to anyone interested in street photography. Street photography now is on my to buy list. I'm planning to re-read the Meyerwitz book.
Please put the recommendations in the description or the in a comment or even written on the screen as you talk about them. it is annoying to have to rescrub through thr video to find the 5 seconds you mention the title and author of each book. i watched already, it was a good video, but i don't want to watch it again just so i can find the books at my library

One of the Books I can‘t recommend enough is „The Meaning in the making“ by Sean Tucker. Not only for photographers but for any creative person.
I hear it’s good!

Really enjoy Alex Webb: The Suffering of Light. Fred Herzog: Modern Color
I have both! Harry Gruyaert also one of my favs 👌🏻
My new fav photography channel.
Thank you!!
Read War of Art . Bit over engineered in parts but generally excellent. Thanks for recommending

Great video and some superb books. My small recommendation is Henri Cartier-Bresson Interviews and Conversations 1951 - 1998 published by Apeture

Allan Schiller - Metropolis. Vivian Maier - A photographer found. Daido Moriyama - A Retrospective. Saul Leiter - Forever
Vivian Maier was something else 👌🏻

The Mindful Photographer by Sophie Howarth, thanks for the video.

Not every book is for everyone :)
Metropolis by Alan Schaller brilliant book
I must say I find his photos really boring and repeatable to be completely honest 🤷🏻♂️
check out Greg girard
