- Fun Gun Gear Reviews Presents: The "Condor Village Parang". Taken form the traditional Indonesian Bush Knife, the Parang is a real Chopper and excellent Survival Knife.
Thanks for watching~ Sootch00
Music: Pond 5
We bought Condor Village Parang about three months ago. It's been used since then for Martial Art practice and for chopping. As a chopping weapon, it is outstanding. What we find is that it is very well balanced when moved through unusual angles in varying arcs either as an attack or follow through. The design of the handle is such that it behaves well in hand and always stays rooted. When chopping from varying angles... even a back hand swippe from low to high, the weapon remains steady.
Sweet blade! Just picked one up tonight for $30 on craigslist. Now I can make one mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich
I don't say it enough, but I sure do appreciate what you do, the message that you put out and the principles behind which you stand. Thank You!!!
Thank you my friend.
The finish on the Condor's has a great contrast the high polish and the rough top of the blade. Well made, hardwood and brass just love it.
I came across this review Don and purchased one of these. I have been reclaiming some over grown property and this thing is amazing.
here in Indonesia, every house own at least a parang
Love Condor Tools! Great Stuff as usual!
I really loved your practical demonstrations of using this blade, awesome video
I decided to buy one of these! Partially because it looks so great and because both John Lofty Wiseman and Ray Mears suggest this (type) machete!!
Sootch, I don't think Chuck Norris is going to appreciate you borrowing his shaving razor. ;-)
Thanks for the video. I might suggest strapping the sheath to your left hip, so as the tip of the blade is pointing toward the back and away from you. This way, you can draw the parang with your right (dominant) hand using the cross-the-body method. I also tend to rest my left hand on the spine of the blade as I draw, which helps keep a steady balance as the swivel-sheath tends to flex on the belt. You might find this drawing method more intuitive and safe. All the best!
Hi Sootch, greetings from Malaysia. Nice to see something from my homeland being of utility to people around the world. The best duku chandong-style parangs here in West Malaysia are made in the small town of Bidor by a family-run smithy, and cost about USD12 to USD15. The standard handles are plastic crap (and can be replaced), but the blades are handforged from old landrover leafsprings. From the sounds of it, factoring in postage, quality and cost of a new handle, you got yourself a good deal with the Condor Village.
I'll check it out. I'd love to have an original Parang from Malaysia. Thank you my friend.
+Vetinari67 I think the best duku chandung are made in East Malaysia (where it originated) by the dayaks. The Bidor parang seems to be a mass produced blade which is why its so rough and crude. I have a hand made duku chandung that was made by an Iban craftsman in Sarawak and its really good.
+sootch00 you can buy malaysian parang at outdoor dynamics malaysia
Hi +belida88 , I wholeheartedly agree - that's why I said the best duku chandong-style parangs in West Malaysia. I'm actually from Sarawak myself but live in Semenanjung now. I would definitely take an original Iban blade over everything else. BTW I visited the Bidor blacksmith earlier this year and found out that they haven't used old leaf springs in a long while -now they use proper steel billets.
After seeing your review I purchased one and I couldn't be more pleased. Yours is definitely shinier at the grind and yours looks more hammered than mine but that doesn't matter since it performs like it should. Thanks for steering me to a wonderful tool. I feel like I could field dress an animal and chop up some wood to cook it and make a rotisserie and then cut up the meat all with this same knife. A great tool for the value.
I think this fella is gonna join the family soon^^
the only machete with that handle style is the golok, and I love it
when chopping some really soft stuff I like to just grip it at the very end of the handle, it's really great if you need speed.
talking about speed, I really love the sheath on the golok, you simply pull it out like a sword, removes one step in getting to work
and while it might not be very sharp, it is extremely durable
these and many other points make it my vavourite tool
I used some gunblack to protect the blank steel, works great, have not sharpened it since I got it but used it quite a bit, still as "sharp" as when I got it
If you had to choose between this or a full tang kukri (not taking price into consideration) which would you choose?
The condor village parang is a beast of a chopper and is excellent as a home base tool but at 2.2lb i found it to heavy to shelp about. So i went with it's baby brother the ECO parang at 1.3lb on my hiking pack and BOB.The eco can do 80% of the chopping and is much easier to use for processing and bushcraft tasks, if you get a chance give the ECO Parang a try i think you will like it.
Take care and God bles you and your family.
Very nice Parang my friend, how much does it cost?
Thanks Sootch! . . .Awesome Review! I just ordered one thanks to your review. Thanks for the 10% off as well! All the best
after 3 condor products I am a believer. the quality is outstanding and nothing compares in its price range. I love their heavy duty kukri and while it's not on par with a HI or Tora,) it's a 3rd of the price and still very comparable. plus I don't feel as bad abusing the condor because it's not quite the work of art that the Nepalese ones are!
I love this blade! I have been getting into collecting large full tang machetes/fixed blades.. That being said, when I am in the woods I use a saw much more than axes,knives,etc... Lol
Sootch, just ordered two as Xmas gifts. Question, did you try batoning with it to split wood, and if so how'd it do?
Hello, I would like to know if according to your experience this small machete is really strong, solid and reliable?
In short it is a good product according to you, or better to focus on some other product? Let me know what you think, thanks to Michael.
Looks good. Beefy and strong. That would make a good chopper or a decent weapon. The price is not too bad either, and I love the finish with the hard wood handle.
Any chance you could do a compare & contrast video of this with your Kukri knives? I'd be interested in your opinion on use as well as weights, blade length and thickness.
hello, I wanted if it is an ottumo tool in your ward? how much exactly does it weigh without the sheath? Thanks Michele.
Great video.
Got my parang just the other day. Great blade.
Lawnmower blade converted to a knife? Has been done. Has the look anyway. Mower blades make excellent machetes. Once they are hardened.
Not a bad representation of the knife, would have been nice for others to see some actual very fine detail work like feather sticks or tent pegs. Although I admire the parang style and know thier potential I'm an axe/hatchet/tomahawk/khukri guy but for someone just starting out or looking for something a bit different from thier nine inch bowie these are a good choice!
Condor makes good gear!
So how do you sharpen it and still keep the 3 different zones ?
I am definitely getting one of these!
typically made from leaf springs from trucks
Scootch00 would you recommend I get the 24 inch one or the one in your video? I'm kinda a huge monster blade buff.
Now that's a survival tool.
nice well made tool. good steel too.
Comes across as strong and rugged.

Pretty cool!
Land sakes son, that's one bad ass toad chopper.
Great home defense tool, and it can chop wood in a pinch !
Love that blade !
trying to light chucks of wood on fire with a ferro rod lmao!
tactical sweater, great video cool music, great tool
I have been thinking of ordering one.
Did you check mini duku parang?
Great video man 😂 av got a village parang on the way ✌🏼🏴
Thanks Sootch...JUST ORDERED ONE
for STEALTHY bottom feeder reduction!
Excellent choice : )
Looks like it would be pretty good for batonning.
It look like something Jason would use
Very good option for survival knife and machete. Like kukri. Aitor survival. Terava Skrama
I have the woodsmans pal with brush guard and pruner. But this looks like it would be a lot easier to swing and way sharper. I love my woodsmans pal but it's more of an ax the way it chops
I have the BG Parang and I'm pretty surprised on the design and durability of that parang, works very well..better than my machetes and Gurka / kukri. For it's purpose or an outdoor blade it's really hard to beat.
I prefer the Gurka knife. Good review as usual.
"Making stakes is really easy" *proceeds to struggle for a good 30 seconds literally mistreating that poor stick*
Good review Awesome tool!
You know, I really don't understand why these types of blades don't come in more standard leather - or even kydex - sheaths, where you can just pull them straight out. I understand the need for retention, but all you need to do is add a retention strap to the top of the sheath. These kinds of sheaths really just turn me off when looking at machetes.
awesome sweater
Would you review the Condor Warlock?
Some knives are good for sawin'. Some are ood for choppin' Thatt'n is good for loppin.
I'm really torn between this, the pack golok and the engineers bolo
Sweet blade!
Was that soundtrack from Diablo Swing Orchestra?
great review
I have the Condor Bushlore I really like it for the price. I profiled it fixed the handle and sharpened it. I was looking to up grade to a more expensive knife. but, after doing all the work to mine and it not failing me. am thinking that I might just buy a parang or a sp8 by Ontario instead.
Love it!
I like this
What are the dimensions of Parang ?
Grateful!
Julio
I ordered the longer version.
im getting one soon
You didn't sharp it when you tested it for us, right? I hate it when people review machetes and then they sharpen them.
OOPS! I spelled it wrong. Sootch00 DOES work. 4-13-14
where are you from ?)))))
you could flip pancakes with it too.
I bet you can hack up a wild boar for the freezer in no time flat with one of those. I was lucky to catch mine on sale last year. You won't find a more rugged, well finished chopping blade for the price point Condor sells these things. I rub the blade down in a thin coat of used vegetable oil to keep it from rusting, if I'm not going to use it for a while.
Why does no one know how to use the handle of a parang properly?
That heavy monster would take an arm clean off of some Mongol warrior crowding you if your scimitar jams.

At 9:06 that sound made me cringe ... ugh
Either way gorgeous blade and I would love to get one.
It looks handmade...I bet I can shave with it.
+KainzMusic
You can't. :-)
It'll cut you, but it ain't that sharp.
Oh...
Dear Sir,
I want to respectully correct you how to spell it in a proper way. It is called "par-aang" not "par-reang" and in every south asian people who speaks Malay pronounce it this way. Thank you for your great review:)
+dhiemazalfa I agree with you! Its pronounced Par- Rung!!!
A++++
Borneo Machete
you pronounce parang wrong!
to all who choose to chop into beams from small sheds, LOOK FOR NAILS, with best regards and a notch into my beloved ax, JT Jensen.
Good point
Just what I need (maybe don't need) just ordered at goinggear.com
I hunt alligators with one of these.
Certainly not a real Malaysian Parang !!!
Sootch has that southern charm tho
