This song topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1996. Toni Braxton was commercially successful in the 90s and rivaled Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, TLC, and Boys To Men in commercial success. Toni was one of the top 10 most successful music acts of the 1990s decade. People forget how commercially successful Toni Braxton was because after the release of her 1996 album "Secrets", she went bankrupt. The album was commercially huge and was worth nearly $200 million in record sales but she didn't get paid a dime. She was unfortunately blacklisted and her stardom was destroyed. Similar issue happened with TLC after the release of CrazySexyCool, plus Toni Braxton and TLC were signed to the same label, LaFace Records. LaFace Records was owned by Babyface and LaReid and was the most successful record label in the world in the 90s. The label produced Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, TLC, Boys To Men and OutKast also Usher and Pink when they were teenagers. Toni Braxton is a legend and if she had more commercial success after her bankruptcy I feel like she would be regarded as a top tier vocalist as a Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. But because her bankruptcy and blacklisting, her stardom was tarnished 😑😑😑😑😑
In regard to your last statement, I believe it's because you're going through R&B in different eras. Even for true R&B fans - we tend to separate it by era i.e. this is 90s R&B (very smooth, sensual, body roll type music) - Ne-Yo is more 2000s R&B which IMO had more of a pop influence... 80s R&B was very 'quiet storm'esque and modern R&B today is very trap/hip-hop influenced.

It’s 2024 and this is the first time I’ve seen the video. I’ve loved this song since its release, and I always thought it was very dark and almost sleazy, in a good way :) Now I’ll think of this song as whimsical and much less serious.

That era of R&B music was in direct opposition to gangsta rap and booty shaking anthems from Dr. Luke or Tupac. Toni was from a classic era of R&B that was about class, elegance, with hints of subtle sexuality like you mentioned. Shock wasn't her thing because the voice came first same with Whitney, Mariah, Anita Baker and Celine Dion, her peers.

Choosing 3 songs from Toni's catalogue is hard 🤔... I'd go with the followings;
1. Rock Me, Roll Me - This song is such a vibe, I love everything about the song; great music, well-structured, and beautifully sung.
2. Find Me A Man - Mellow and soothing song that I can put on repeat all day. Toni sounds silky smooth.
3. Breathe Again - Probably the song I enjoy her singing live the most. She always delivers. And I've always felt that this song is meant for her, and only her.
One more song that I would highly recommend is a song she did with Babyface called Roller Coaster. Probably one of the best songs in her entire singing career. 🥰
