  • Vocal Coach Reacts To Brendon Urie's Best Live Vocals - Ken Tamplin
After receiving a lot of requests, I decided to do a vocal coach reacts to Brendon Urie. Let me tell you, he is a force to be reckoned with.
Brendon has described himself as a "spaz in high school," and was also bullied but he was able to channel his energy into music. He plays guitar, piano, bass guitar, drums, accordion, organ, cello, violin and trumpet .
He joined his first band in high school and worked at a smoothie cafe in order to pay his band's rent for their practice space. At the cafe, Urie often sang for customers.
Urie met Brent Wilson while taking guitar classes offered at their high school and Wilson asked Urie to try out as lead guitarist for their band Panic! at the Disco, and ended up becoming their lead singer.
Brendon is also a talented songwriter and In 2015, he wrote a song for the SpongeBob SquarePants musical.
He can act as well and starred in Cyndi Lauper's Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Kinky Boots in 2017, in which he played one of the lead roles, Charlie Price.
More recently Urie collaborated with Taylor Swift on "ME!", which is the first single of Swift’s upcoming seventh studio album, Lover.
I’m going to be reacting to a compilation of live performances by Brendon where he showcases his range of talent.
I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you thought!

He said that he never went for vocal training. That doesn't mean he didn't train and practice to get where he is at right now, that kind of singing doesn't come naturally. There are a lot of popular singers with good voices who don't use proper technique, Brendon isn't one of them.

I think Brendon is definitely one of the biggest reasons why the vocalists in the punk scene these days push themselves. Stereotypically you have the image of a Punk singer who just yells into the microphone and that's how it might have been back in the days but now you have these incredible young singers who can do ballads, they can belt, they can use distortion, they're usually on key and can probably play at least 2 instruments and most of them would say that they look up to Brendon.
By the way it would be totally awesome to get a video on modern punk vocals, there is so little material out there for that style and it has so much potential.

I really enjoyed your reaction to Brendon again. I've been hoping that you would do another one. Thank you.
Couple of things just for information for you or anyone else reading through comments who may be interested. I apologize in advance because I always end up giving tons of information.
Brendon has mentioned that he hasn't really had full long term vocal training although he has worked with/gotten tips from vocal coaches when the band first started and a couple other times over the years. Also, when he did Kinky Boots on Broadway he did work with someone to prepare for that but she mostly gave him warm-up tips/ways to protect his voice etc. and of course got tips from Cyndi Lauper. He was never in choir in school or anything except for singing in the Mormon church growing up. His whole family is very musical but with instruments more than singing. My guess is that in addition to the tips he has gotten he has probably done a lot of research.
On a totally different note, the Dream On cover was at the rehearsal for the Miss Universe Pageant. Panic! was the band for the pageant and they did two of their own songs. Steven Tyler actually did the song for the actual filming of the Pageant with Brendon and the band. He was a judge so he didn't do the rehearsal but they needed to rehearse and plan the cameras so they asked Brendon to do it.
All of the acoustic video clips are from various radio station visits throughout the years. Here is a concert version of his song Always (which he wrote for his wife) that is on the third P!ATD album called Vices & Virtues:
    ruclips.net/video/vL9vgS8WFy0/видео.html
If you ever want to do more recent concert video reactions to get some idea of his vocals and songs right before he did Broadway and now there are tons of great videos from both the Death of a Bachelor Tour in 2017 and the Pray For the Wicked tour in 2018/2019. A few great choices are Casual Affair, Emperors New Clothes, Crazy=Genius and King of the Clouds.
There are three great professionally filmed Bohemian Rhapsody performances if you want some choices.
    1. In Cleveland in 2014: ruclips.net/video/kT1t4jVmv7E/видео.html
    2. DOAB Tour in 2017: ruclips.net/video/irK0Su5SE2Y/видео.html
    3. Filmed in Sidney in 2018 to be broadcast during the American Music Awards: ruclips.net/video/cyc-a-DOKwk/видео.html
(not his best, in my opinion, and not the greatest sound recording but still fantastic). Also the new guitarists first ever concert with Panic! and his first time filmed for T.V.
All three of these Tweeted about by Brian May
Thanks again Ken. You are awesome.

Wow Ken...Ive never understood what attacking or coming into a note from "above" properly meant until now. And this was summary. Thank you! its about placing the note. coming in from behind and dropping in on it. Thats how certain singer have such an attack and grip on the song. Thanks for sharing that piece of wisdom!

If you have Instagram Ken the other day while streaming Brendon was singing along to multiple songs from many different singers. There are quite a few posts. He was singing Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey and Prince for example. He always sings either along with the exact notes or harmonizes higher. On Monday he did Metal Monday and was singing along and basically introducing many of his fans to music that they don’t usually listen to.
The song at 11:30 called 9 in the Afternoon he actually plays piano on that song when they do it in concert.

I really appreciate his rich tone. I think the way he enunciates his words so fully like that allows for that rich timbre to come through. And I’m not a theater person whatsoever. I think it’s the low larynx with the contemporary twist I love so much. I like the way he approaches higher notes in his chest and mix as opposed to say a Steve Tyler where it thins out and to me loses emotional value. That rocker screaming tone is not my favorite.

I agree wholeheartedly on the musical theater vs. pop convention in singing. This was the flaw in the short-lived Ross Wiiliam-Wild fronting Spandau Ballet last year. He came from London West End theater, but never really cut the muster fronting a seminal new wave band.
