They don't say Anya is adopted because it looks so suspicious. He got a wife and a daughter in less than a week and suddenly he wants her to get into the best school in the country where only important people put their children.
yeah just pretending you already have a backstory that's far more believable is much better, the child's been with you for 'x' years so you force that "we already have a relationship with each other as family members" and people will be like oh, I guess that's fine. Kinda like pretending to be a psychologist who's been in the field for a long time. You don't say "I 'just' came in, instead, it'd be I already have 'x' years under my belt and diploma/license to prove it. People will believe it and that's literally what companies look for when hiring, years of experience over diploma.

10:48 gotta explain the conservative since Asian (or Japanese) is different from American. While US interpretation means conserving the existing idea or traditions, the word here means that he is someone who conserves himself, as in he refrains himself from criticizing or disrespecting other people, therefore "the students like him" line follows.
That meaning also exists is English, but modern American language is so politicized few people use (or even know) that meaning. If you read an old novel, you'll see it used that way. Glad you called it out! I think they misunderstood it - at least at first.
@@SchoolVideosGoHere I think it would be beneficial to ask a follow up question whenever phrases like progressive or conservative are brought up , like what is being conserved or what is one progressing towards. Both words can mean entirely different things depending on how they are used. I can conserve good moral values or progress towards good moral values if I dont currently hold any. I can also conserve policies that take life away prematurely or progress towards ideas that end life prematurely. The question , I think should always extend further into what someone is trying to conserve or progress , instead of using the words themselves to put people into a box beforehand.
@@user-lr6hw4dq4t idk I would argue that both conservative and progressive can be good or bad depending on their goals. There things in the past that are worth conserving , just as there are things in future that are worth progressing towards. @@hillrp1 I've seen a LOOOOT of progressives, who are in and of themselves quite bigoted. I'd even argue that labeling someone as racist, solely because they're conservative, is a form of bigotry. As is supporting that ideal of fitting every conservative into a single box category. Perhaps you should do some more learning yourself, but at least you had the sense to not "high five" and bring your own political bigotry into the classroom. Nowadays, teachers (especially "progressive" teachers) are constantly being demonized for doing JUST THAT (shoving their politics down a minor's throat while they're still at a malleable age), so it was definitely good on you to break THAT box that many fear about teachers, I suppose.
15:11 i don't read the manga so I'm not sure if they ever addressed why they didn't roll with Anya just being adopted, but I've seen Sam ask this question multiple times so i thought I'd take a crack at it. Given how the school was already suspect of how new Loid and Yor's marriage was (forged to be 1 year old on paper), Anya being adopted would have further added on to the suspicion. A 1 year marriage on paper (lol days in reality) with an adopted daughter just screams suspiscious; a made up family only created to get into the school with ulterior motives (Also side note the 1 year marriage being just barely acceptable to not seem staged explains perfectly their rather weak/new family dynamic, which gives Yor some leeway for not having completely adopting the mantle of the traditional mother role). Plus as you see this episode how high-end this school is they aren't just taking any rag tag families in; you have to have both parents, on top of being within the upper echelon of society (shit i'd even speculate given the context of the setting and time period if there were families entering with same sex parents that'd be an absolute no go). Anya already of course doesn't look like either Loid or Yor (we see mismatched unique character designs in anime all the time who are supposed to be related and look nothing alike, and sometimes everyone just looks the same in some anime, so it's easy to forget they're just drawings and the lines aren't easily blurred like that in real life. Given this, even by anime standards all 3 of them look nothing alike, so it's easier to just say (or assume) she takes after her biological mother instead of Loid, and have Yor be the step parent. Obviosuly the reverse would be overly complicated in regards to the dynamic (lies lol) between Loid and Yor. So yea, this was probably their best plan of action. tl;dr, it was their best plan of action, Anya being adopted would be too suspicious on top of a new 1 year marriage.
In the time period they're mocking, a lot of weight was given to blood ties and being of good stock. Adoption would be looked down on and be a hurdle to entry in higher society. Slight spoiler for the next couple episodes: You see multiple times the elegant headmaster claims Anya is from Loid so she must have what it takes to turn out elegant too.
@@SchoolVideosGoHere Very true. My mother was adopted in the late '60s (in the US), and my grandmother told me that there was an intense stigma on all sides against adoption at the time. For adoptive parents, it was considered at least a little bit shameful, because it was seen as an admission that you weren't capable of having children of your own, which was still seen as almost a personal failing - especially for women - despite no one really having any control over their own natural fertility. For adoptees, the old stigma against bastardry still applied to a degree, but there was also a sense that they were just rootless castoffs, and that they would grow up to be problem-children, or just all-around lesser people because of it. And of course, for the parents of any child put up for adoption, there was HUGE stigma, especially since most of them were unmarried. My mother's biological parents were both unwed 16-year-olds when she was born, and that circumstance was considered so terrible that the default option was that the state would hide and/or seal ALL of their information, almost to the level of a witness protection-style coverup, in order to spare their families the shame of the public finding out that their wayward teenagers had produced a child out of wedlock. The information on who my biological grandparents are was hidden so thoroughly that even 55 years later, we still have no clue who they are. I plan on doing a family DNA kit at some point in the hopes that one of them did so as well, but until then we are in the dark. So yeah, I could easily see the culture of the time being such that admitting that Anya is adopted would mean instant rejection from such a high-end, prestigious, and ultra-conservative school.

If he suggested to Yor that they lie to Eden about their family history, it might make her ask why they have to lie. And I have a feeling she's not a great liar anyway.
