It absolutely amazes me how much you know how to do at such a young age. Your dad must have been teaching you by the time you could walk. I love watching your videos.
Have to agree with you 100%. Carl can be a chippy, a sparky, a plumber, a roofer, a car mechanic.... et i'l peut faire tout en Francais! Formidable, mon brave.
On a restoration project such as this, saving money by devising ways to do the job yourself & improvising is the best option. You are doing that & seem to manage it in a way that gets the job done efficiently & is eye appealing. Nice work!
Carl I'm loving this stuff, excellent work👍. I started working on old farm buildings with my uncle when I was 11. Some demolished and replaced with new large modern structures, others refurbished as it depended what the intended use was. Also cast sillage pits, cattle crushes and concreted lots of the farmyard as the winter weather in NW Ireland is ultra wet!! All via a mixer on the back of the tractor AFTER drawing the sand and gravel via trailer (all shovelled on) from local ancient beach areas (licenced). Uncle still farms it nearly 50 years later. We worked extremely hard but had great fun, your videos brought amazing memories back for me. It nearly killed my auntie trying to feed us as we were burning so many calories every day. 👍👍👍
I think you guys are brilliant and inspiring. I have not watched all the videos yet, but I do think though that your younger sister deserves some mentioning from time to time.
Carl I think we need to build small houses for the birds' nests. It will make a good movie. Thanks for the motivation, I live in a small town. Where people started living from 1152 . The village grew into a town in 1781. There are very few old houses, many have been destroyed by wars
Hello from the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful gutter system you have there! We are on year 5 of a similar gutter (6” / 15 cm half round galvanized steel) install (father and son installed). The only difference is that we have are using rain chain instead of downspouts. We get a tremendous amount of precipitation here - 167 days a year on average . We have had 2 snow/ ice storms of 18” (45 cm) or greater accumulation since install and several windstorms of 50+mph (80+ kph). I am pleased to report the gutters still hold tight and have not needed any repairs. All joints are riveted and sealed with gutter mastic. You should anticipate a long happy life with your gutters😀👍 Fantastic channel have created. You and your dad make a good team. Keep up the good work. PS- still looking for the metric conversion factor for “days”.
I have to hand it to you, your workshop has the best conditions to realize ideas. I only have a modest little one to show for it - but for my needs it's quite enough. Maybe this year at Christmas there will be one or the other woodworking machine as a gift.
Hi, It’s always nice to follow project. It’s a pleasure to listen to you. Easy to follow. I’m not English. How many are you in the family? Looking forward to next episode. Thks a lot Louis
I've been going through your entire playlist : your videos are very soothing as a background while I'm working! Your voice-over, the nature sounds, you working and the wind chimes combine in the most wonderful way. Thank you! I realise I'm super late to this video, but why aren't birds welcome to roost under the roof tiles ? The entire construction seems so solid that one nest can't really damage that, right? Restoring the farm must feel to some types of birds like a restoration of their habitat, no?
Looks like there’s a bigger gap than necessary between the tool rest and the wheel on your bench grinder, check your owners manual and close the gap for safety sake. Love your channel, you do great work.
I hope the silicone that you are using is compatible with the tin of the gutters. The downpipe brackets are brilliant, Ive used them before and would recommend them to anyone.
@@carlroge It is doubly difficult when product is readimade and doesn't or can't be adapted for your situation. The joy of your guttering is that it was malleable unlike the plastic stuff for domestic use in the UK. Some friends of mine have a house near Malaga where rain gutter is never fitted. An after market product is used that clamps on the roof tile edge which is fine until the tiles fail. Your job looks in keeping with the age of the house and will age accordingly.

Sir, your vision, your planning and advice with the help of your good team is on another level. I see bringing the past into the present and future! {Awesome skill level}!
I think you should have soldered the joints rather than riveted, those rivets will not last. That is how I learnt of my French roofer. I think the reason they do it is because in France they get heavy rain and you will be surprised at how much pressure builds up. Nice video series!
Nice work. Thanks for sharing your work with us. One suggestion: I think it is easier to cut the hole for the downspout in the gutter by just cutting into it with a hacksaw and then using tin snips (metal cutting shears) to cut the hole. In my opinion this is a better (less dangerous and cleaner) approach than using the hole saw on an electric drill.
A little oil which you clean off later with acetone would go a long way to keeping your drill bits intact. Simply sleeving the threaded bar into a tube/pipe would give you a way to adjust the guttering horizontally, as well. Consider patenting that guttering method and selling it as a kit on-line. It's incredibly useful for all sorts of buildings.
I believe I have watched all of your videos. Bu at the end of this gutter rinstallation you mentioned connecting the downpipes to a 100 year old underground water tank.. Did you ever make this video? I did not find it. Many thanks.
I really enjoyed these videos. Living in Canada, I rarely see these types of roofing systems. Well done. I hate to be that guy but you were using an engineers level. Theodolites measure vertical and horizontal angles.

great video. It is a shame you had to block off the beautiful Lime Concrete craftsmanship. Thank you for making the statement at the very end about recycling the water.
Nice work! I’m guessing there is no danger of a snow load there. In my area the supports would be insufficient with snow and ice over the winter months. Curious what the gutters are made of? Galvanized tin or ???
I much prefer the metal rain system that's common in the rest of Europe. There's too much upvc shite in Ireland and England. Nice job lads, perfect fall on it. Just a pity the gutters couldn't go a bit closer the the eve tile, might allow heavy rain to over shoot.
I can imagine every Frenchman with his head in his hands saying quel con, it's supposed to be soldered, obviously, be interesting to see how it holds up with a full storm blowing but either way looks good👍
There is a trick to half round gutter. If you twist it, you can feed the bead of one piece into the other without notching for the lap. You could have punched a hole in the gutter with an awl and cut it with tinsnips in about a tenth of the time it took to hook up a drill and hole saw. And why didn't you solder your seams? Zinc solders perfectly. That said, your brackets are ingenious. I have nothing but respect for your level of craftmanship. But let a tinsmith do the metal work, 'eh?

This looks good, for now. I hope it doesn't snow where you live... or rain to much.... or get too windy.
If I may make a suggestion 1. Lightning Rod on the Roof tied in to the gutter system and than a ground stake in the ground 2. Keep up the great Work.

Love Dad's bracelet
Really nice commentary 👌 very enjoyable
Nice, good old days all joints would have been soldered, now that would have been fun

I'm interested to see how the mastic joints work out as I've not had good results. Ended up soldering the old fashion way (and learnt a new skill! 😀).
Cannot solder aluminium to galvanised
Just caulk your seam in the gutter no one will see it and the water will go right over it

The guttering supports are also normally driven into the genoise to be closer to the roof tiles
