    Exactly the way I learned them, move for move with just a bit of variation to Gojo Shiho(which has alot of variation!).
    Good to see a solid old school Okinawan presence. No overly exaggerated kime hip swivel, kia's or tempo changes. My sensei said going to Okinawa to see the old timers was like watching dinosaurs in a museum. Nothing fancy, just rock solid. Love it.
    Now for the Bunkai please.

    I learned most of these as a teenager in NYC in the 90s. Our dojo was in a basement of a church. Our amazing sensei and his team were able to teach and pass on these forms to dozens of students. I feel honored to have taken part in this style.

    Very interesting to compare with the Shotokan versions. Changing to sports karate, kata had to change from "technique instruction manuals" to "technique management proofs". Yokogeri, jumps, and so on. Neither of them is wrong, just different. But to see the original is quite interesting.

    Amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing. I train in Ohshima sensei version of Shotokan karate, and I've noticed that Ohshima sensei changed some elements back in our Shotokan katas back to the original Shorin ryu version, for example, the kicks in Chinto (Gankaku), using Mae geri or yoko geri keage instead of yoko geri kekomi. Still, the interpretation of most of the moves in the katas seems to be quite different. It would be very interesting to see some bunkai of the Shorin ryu katas. Very impressive performance by sensei, anyway. Thank you!

      Hello I practice shubukan karate in Spain. Visit shubukan.org There are some shubukan schools in usa canada spain czech republic and mainly switzerland (which website is aokks.org) the founder is yasuhiro uema (the performer karateka). I deeply recomend yoy to search a nhk documentary (is in english) on youtube calles samurai spirit: karate in which sensei Uema appears in the las 15 minutes. There are other two documentaries where Uema sensei appers: which i don't remember its name but one is the one from these kata are taken. The shubukan school is focused on kata with very natural moves that not in spectacle and refuses the combat (and so kumite) considering it the last thing to do, something that only could happen when life is in danger and all other alternatives are gone.

    • @ceseijitsu
      @ceseijitsu 8 месяцев назад

      Hello, I am very sure Sensei Uema was under Nakazato Sensei of Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan in the 90's at least. I remember him coming to the US in Virginia for the winter camps hosted by Doug Perry. If I am wrong someone please correct me it seems all the upper rank have their own systems after Shugaro Nakazato passed. I hope this helps.

    "In Shorin Ryu there are 2 Kusanku... Dai and Sho..." This is not correct! There are about 12 variations of Kusanku! And the oldest and perhaps most important version is Chatanyara Kusanku (not the Chatanyara that you see on tournaments, as this is a modidied tounrament version of it. The verison i speak about is known to some people under the name Kuniyoshi Kusanku. That is the original Kusanku.) And another very important Version of Kusanku is Matsumura Kusanku. It is well known among the masters but not widespread among the average Karatepractitioners. Kusanku Sho is also know as Chibana Kusanku to some people. Kusanku Dai evolved out of the Matsumura iteration.
    Versions of Kusanku i have heard of are:
    Chatanyara Kusanku (Kuniyoshi Kusanku to some)
    Chatanyara Kusanku (the one you see on tournaments)
    Matsumura Kusanku
    Chibana Kusanku (aka Kusanku Sho)
    Kusanku Dai
    Kanku Dai
    Kanku Sho
    And there are about 13 iterations of Passai. Versions i have heard of are:
    Tomari Passai (one of the oldest versions of Passai)
    Matsumura Passai
    Itosu Passai
    Koshiki Passai
    Chibana Passai
    Ishimine Passai
    Passai Dai
    Passai Sho
    Bassai Dai
    Bassai Sho
    There are also different versions of Chinto.
    Tomari Chinto with a diagonal Embusen (see Matsubayashi Ryu)
    Matsumura Chinto (not sure if the version shown in the video is Matsumura Chinto or not).
    And finally Gojushiho: It has also several variants. The original form is called Useishi
    This version here in the video is quite close to Useishi.
    I know another Gojushiho, that has the exact same name (Gojushiho) but looks different.
    And of course some Ryuha have Gojushiho Sho and Gojushiho Dai.

    • @chrisvac
      @chrisvac  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing this valuable knowledge. I was not aware of these variations and oldest Katas. It makes all sense given Matsumura being one of the founders of Karate.

      @@chrisvac I almost forgot: there are 2 different kinds of Shorin Ryu. Version 1 is based on Seisan and version 2 is based on Naihanchi (some say Naifanchi). The style practised and taught by Zenpo Shimabokuro is version 1, based on Seisan. In contrast Shorin Ryuha like Matsubayashi Ryu are examples for Naihanchi-based Shorin styles.

      Shorin-ryu is very hard based on Okinawan style and is a clean but strong style. Shotokan came from Shorin. The techniques on Shorin are based much more on efectiveness then in beauty. In Shorin we have many kihons, muuuuch core training and kumite. Shorin-ryu is one of the very essences of Karate-do.

    • @Abondano1
      @Abondano1 3 года назад

      I think that you are very lazy in your opinions, I am only using your owns words. I self know very well Shotokan, and shorin ryu. As the other people so gently explain you. The origen of Shotokan comes from shorin-ryu and this self from the shuri-te. Shoryn-ryu is one of the 3 main Karate styles in Okinawa. Shotokan was developed in Japan-land for more kompetitive issues and was more popularized. I was dive in Shotokan Karate from my Japaner Shijan Katsuya Ishiyama (9th dan). He self lerned to us Traditional Karate. I recommend you to find a good Sensey that can teach you traditional Karate. Karate means, Integrity and Respect. Karate is not a beaty Kata, and that is Shorin-ryu Karate, discipline and is not ideal for lazy people.

    • @mishaaskar3323
      @mishaaskar3323 Год назад +3

      ...I'm going to get my popcorn as you just insulted one of the most effective forms of Karate ...that comes directly from Okinawa of all places, the birthplace of Karate...and was the father of Shotokan...that rigid, Japanese-imported Karate style created when Funakoshi went to Japan to sell it.
      In Okinawa, they train the old ways...meaning makiwara, bunkai and tons of conditioning and sparring is necessary until a certain level when the hands are literally restructured and reformed from chopping at rocks and punching into makiwara, their feet alone feel like rocks hitting the leg.
      The reason they don't exaggerate is because in combat, you are attacked OUT OF STANCE.
      You are stacked as you stand up or are walking normally so your fighting must match that situation...hence the heavy reliance on Bunkai and Kumite.
      In Shotokan, they try to promote.the ONE-PUNCH WIN.
      But in Karate.that has faced tons of combat like Kyukoshin, they know that you cannot and must not be stagnant and rigid. You must move and constantly be moving, attacking and defending.
      The only Karate.to.have proven to beat all kinds of Karate was called Motobu-Ryu which has been lost to time...an art that embarrassed Funakoshi when Motobu when to Japan to punish him for commercialising their sacred art of Te, he also defeated westerners and other Okinawans with ease bit was horrible at passing his art down. Hence it's loss to time.
