    Good old air conditioner filter material is my go to , in filter compartments , to hold back substrate ,as it lays better and is firmer . Or as a little pump cushy to be sure nothing gets in . It is very easy to sew if needed to make a custom application . Nice work !!!

    Amazing how you did this without and adhesives or silicon. Looks just as good if not better than a foam background. With this type of setup did you keep the back substrate higher so as not to flood out the vivarium or does it matter?

    hey, thank for sharing. i got almost the same viv set, but the cork board gets mold from time to time. if i use sunlight bulb and keep the humility low it wouldnt mold... but it is said the zoo med backboard product is mold free isnt it? how to get rid of the mold? i even clean out all the scene and dried everything out for a few years... but when put the board back it still mold... i currently introduced a lot isopods in, and they are eating the mold but still you can smell the mold if put nose on top the screen mesh of or inside of the enclosure. i'm actually worried about my little snake inside, and had to put a fan on top screen mesh of viv and keep it running most of the day while mist several times a day...

    How much humidity does the waterfall itself provide?
    The way you set it up, of course, wouldn't provide the most humidity (the water is following the wood down, not falling straight down and misting into the air) but I'm curious how long this could sustain a terrarium on its own, or if the repti fogger is really necessary at all.

    I've been slowly getting the supplies to do this, but have a few questions. Is the fancy light necessary? I have two different lamps for my crested: one day and one night, mainly for temperature during the colder months. I'm not ruling out getting the light entirely, but right now, I have something. also the hygrotherm Too? is that a definite need (although I'm really interested in getting it anyhow). also what plants did you use? and where could I get them?! local nurseries and pet stores have nothing here.

    • @OmgItsJoshREAL
      @OmgItsJoshREAL 6 лет назад

      Stephanie Ilavsky Fancy lighting isn’t always necessary. But if you’re adding live plants than you should be using a uvb light to allow the plants to grow. With plants, you can get any kind of tropical plant but there are limitations to what tropical plants to use as some could harm your cresties. You can have pothos, snake plants, jade plants, fern and a vide variety. www.joshsfrogs.com/plants-for-pets/plants-for-crested-geckos-1/show/all.html.
      That website shows you what kind of plants you could use.

    do you know if this would work with the excavator clay, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't but i am still curious

    • @BigAlsVOD
      @BigAlsVOD  7 лет назад

      Excavator clay is moist when you're using it to construct the environment, but then has to dry and harden. Once it becomes moist/wet again, it will lose structural integrity and begin to crumble, so using it in a waterfall/humid environment isn't recommended.

      This would be more for amphibians or reptiles that require moderate to high humidity. Like frogs, salamanders, and crested geckos. Bearded dragons are naturally found in the deserts of Australia so they need low humidity, heat lamps, and UVB lights. Research any details you want to know. I hope you enjoy having a beardie :)

    Question, so once it's all setup do you just let the water run thru the substrate and back down to the pump? It looked like you had a reservoir at the end that you never explained?

    • @BigAlsVOD
      @BigAlsVOD  8 лет назад

      That is correct - the water flows through the substrate, down through the mesh, and into the drainage layer where the pump is sitting.

      This guy made a good setup, but terrible at the same time. Thats why 90% of naturalistic bioactive tank builders will use silicon and foam. So you can properly keep filtration and substrate AWAY from water flow.

      The problem i see with using it for a chameleon is the caging itself, chameleons need proper airflow and with that particular cage its all glass, i suppose you could use cork flats on 2 sides of the cage as the walls for the waterfall. Also if your chameleon is female you will need to make the substrate ABOVE the hydro balls thick enough to burrow in as they burrow to lay eggs. But it would be a great water source as chams dont see standing water. Also need room for them to climb as well.

    This is not very well thought out at all.
    First you will never ever be able to reach the pump again without destroying the whole set up should there ever be a problem with the pump (and there will be).
    And secondly the substrate will always be wet encouraging mold etc.
    Looks nice enough for the moment but it is not made for the long run at all. Shame.

      LOOKS AWESOME - But....Agreed - ANY tank setup needs to be able to be cleaned - lizard pooping need to be cleaned up, that tank would be a nightmare to keep clean. Of course, getting to pump, which is inevitable would destroy the setup the way it is in this video. Should be a much deeper tank , front to rear, to allow for ALL THE MECHANICAL'S to be serviced from the rear, behind the cork. In addition, water in that environment would quickly become contaminated. TRY AGAIN

    • @TheCharleseye
      @TheCharleseye 6 лет назад

      Yes. The more water you add to a tank, the more it becomes like an aquarium and the more frequently it will have to be cleaned. On the plus side, moving water stays cleaner than stagnant water, so this is still leagues better than a fish bowl. Make sure there's plenty of airflow, too.

    • @tiffyah3982

    Nice idea for a temporary set up, but the majority of those plants are going to get far to big in a short while to maintain it for a reasonable length of time

    Won’t the hydroballs mess up the pump by getting into the filter

    • @OmgItsJoshREAL
      @OmgItsJoshREAL 6 лет назад

      Chrispy Cream No, the hydro balls are round, and would let water pass right through it easily.

    • @BigAlsVOD
      @BigAlsVOD  8 лет назад +2

      +Roman's Reptile's - Thanks for asking! You can find the link to the kit itself in the video description, along with links for the majority of materials used! The only thing you'd have to get separately is a tank-- we can't ship them as they break too easily :( But you can place an order with us for everything else and we'll get it shipped to you ASAP!

      Executioner Airsoft it gives heat

    • @OmgItsJoshREAL
      @OmgItsJoshREAL 6 лет назад

      JJ Aquariums The digger does not give heat. It gives humidity.

    • @OmgItsJoshREAL
      @OmgItsJoshREAL 6 лет назад

      Executioner Airsoft The digger is to use for humidity. And to determine what plants you can use you use google.

    Could you do this for a crested gecko

    • @PrimitivTool
      @PrimitivTool 6 лет назад

      no as cresties need 50-60 percent and this is more like 75-85.

    • @OmgItsJoshREAL
      @OmgItsJoshREAL 6 лет назад

      Layfayette No, not true. This can still be used and work well with cresties. You just need to work around and play with it a bit to get it to be right where you want it.

    • @OmgItsJoshREAL

      Sha Lo K Not true, this set up can still be used with ball pythons. You just need to do it differently so you get the right amount of humidity for them.

    One problem when enough debris fall under the screen and clog up the pump you need to take the whole bottom apart to clean it. You are better off buying a premade waterfall that the pump is hidden inside the waterfall and you dont have to worry about debris.

    Wouldn't the eco earth and wood background mold?

    • @petergriffith4109
      @petergriffith4109 8 лет назад

      exactly

    • @dylanjackson3278
      @dylanjackson3278 8 лет назад

      +Peter Griffith nah because the backround isnt made of wood its made of cork so its kinda water resistant and eco earth is made for reptiles and projects like this even if it did mold it would be natural mold and the bugs you should have in your eco earth would then eat the mold to dispose of it
