      What is your take on the "Great Man/Woman" approach to history? Would things have played out for the better, or for the worse, had Elizabeth not ruled when she did?
      Of course, we can't know.
      It would be hard to point to a singular greatest achievement. Impossible even. As a whole I think it was the system of rule that she created or altered. At a time when England could have weakened itself and become subject to foreign domination she was able to ride a change in thinking about loyalties. Above being Catholic or Protestant, or swearing allegiance to a particular lord, the people of England became the Nation of
      England.
      Would that have happened had Elizabeth not become a truly independent ruler of the Nation of England? Had her father not broken from the Universal Christian Church?
      She ruled during a momentous change in the way that people thought of themselves. She was herself an agent of that change.

    In my opinion Queen Elizabeth I greatest achievement was proving to the world that women could rule a country, that women were not empty headed milk sops to be lead around by some man. I agree. This is a digression but I got rather grumpy reading an Elizabeth biography by Allison Weir in which she repeated the line "Elizabeth was no feminist" at least five times. Of course not by 20th or 21st century standards - maybe not even by 16th century standards - but you wouldn't exactly call her an obvious catalyst for anti-feminism either so why the emphasis on this? Curious because Weir has recently reassessed Anne Boleyn and cautiously concluded that Anne can be called "a feminist of her time". Would be interested in History Calling's thoughts on this. Do you agree with Weir that Anne could be called a feminist of her time?

      Thing is, they know Elizabeth was feminist as heck for her time period, but they don't want the "low dirty" feminists to claim her or look up to her. They know feminists use her as a figure to look up to, and they don't like it, so It's more a "back off, she's ours you FEMINISTS! HOW DO YA' LIKE DAT?!"

      @edithengel2284 3 месяца назад

      @@Mark-Smeaton She was no feminist: Because she ruled in a sense as a man, she was careful to relate to her position as a man as far as she could--which didn't mean she ignored her femininity, which she certainly didn't. As she said in the Armada speech she had the body of a weak and feeble woman, but the heart and stomach of a king. She did not desire that the order of things be changed. Her accomplishments were even greater because she navigated this so well. I think we diminish them if we try to make her something she wasn't.

    The Tudor dinasty only lasted 3 generations 2 men, a child, 2 women, BUT it is by far the most famous dinasty in world history.

    Wasn't the English High Admiral who knocked out the Armada a direct relative of the headless Catherine Howard? He was a good man ... took care of those under His command after the battle. Basically, pensioned them out of his own pocker when QE1 neglected them.

      Admiral Charles Howard, Lord High Admiral, was Catherine Howard's half-first-cousin. Elizabeth Howard Boleyn (Anne Boleyn's mother) and Lord Edmund Howard, Catherine's father were half-siblings of the Admiral's father Lord William Howard. The Admiral was Queen Elizabeth's half-first cousin, once removed. He seems to have been an excellent and generous commander.

I'm going to have to do so many family trees for this eventual video! :-)

    I know its abit off topic but i cant help wondering how Elizabeth 1 would have handled Prince Harry & his wifes recent debacle? ...🤔
    Along with Anne Boleyn & her daughter Elizabeth have to be my 2 most favourite historical figures.
    Theres just something unknowable about these 2 women & the facination they compel in everyone.
    Both strong, determined, extremely intelligent & erudite
    They played life like a game of chess, always 10 moves ahead & plenty of sideways moves or get out plans.
    I think there has to be something extraordinary though about how Elizabeth survived in such a minefield of danger & plots & betrayals
    I dont blame her for not wanting to marry after seeing how much men disregarded women in those times but still, her steely will & determination are phenomenal!
    Short lived as a blood line yet the history of the Tudors still continue to enthrall us today
    I know i never ever get tired of hearing & seeing anything about them all, going back to my 1st fascination when i read the life story of Margaret Beaufort & her blood line from John of Gaunt
    Again Margaret was a force to be reckoned with! Wow she was a woman & a half & her will & determination to advance her son & herself to the highest position in the land.
    I think there has to be something in Margarets DNA that makes women of her line, almost Goddess like females with a greatness to rule & put down any obstacles with a swat of the hand!
    Brilliant women of Tudor blood
    I still think they are around in spirit !
    I just hope they can bolster up the resolve of our present Queen to squash the troublesome gnats
    Of Prince Harry & his concubine!
    Thank you so much for this whole series on the Tudors its been brilliant, clear & concise, straight to the facts & very entertaining & yes ive subbed to yr channel 🙋‍♀️

    If Mary hadn’t died so early and Elizabeth hadn’t been such a remarkable ruler, it’s very possible England would have had good reason to never want another Queen regnant and we may never have had Anne, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. Elizabeth I proved that a queen was a good thing for England, and she’s one of the reason why England is more associated with its queens than it’s kings

    The Tudor's dynasty was incredible propaganda machine and a for runner;
    For the lesson this dynasty of men and women within the family of Tudor, has been learnt by modern government, interesting indeed.
    Weather was incredible on that day or night and the survival of the few men either in Ireland or Scotland, proved the strength of humanity in life at it's worst moment in time and history.

    I wonder how Elizabeth was allowed to be throne. Because like if Queen Mary the 1st reversed the divorce of her parents wouldn’t that make Elizabeth technically illegitimate.

    • @edithengel2284
      @edithengel2284 3 месяца назад

      She was already illegitimate, declared so by her father in the wake of his breakup with Anne. Mary's reversal of her own illegitimacy didn't affect this. Mary and Elizabeth came to the throne because they were written into the succession by their father, regardless of their illegitimate status.

      Hi Raumaan, Elizabeth wouldn't have needed to name Lady Jane as her heir (had Lady Jane still been alive) as Henry VIII's will stipulated that she was next in line. The two girls knew each other, but I don't know if they were friends or not I'm afraid.
