I recently realized, emergency was never covered in history/civics books. Atleast not when I wrote my ICSE exams in 2010.

During the last 70 years, Congress was in power for the most of the time and made to wrote textbooks according to their tastes without mentioning their wrong doings. Was it really? Because it seemed like it’s essentially a form of the ship of thesus argument: which can be resolved by arguing that it’s not the individual components but their relationship to each other that constitute the identity. i do concede that making sense of the constitution this way might be unreasonable but I can’t think of a coherent argument for the same

That was a clear picture. I was asking many people about this Emergency case. But, hardly people knew about it. Thanks for this documentary. Congress party being corrupt won’t signify that BJP is corruption-free. Of course, BJP lead by great leaders like JP, Vajpayee, and Advani (to some extent) WAS secular and democratic which are the identities of Indian constitution. In my viewpoint, the current BJP is equally unstable and corrupt like the Congress party. We must be unbiased when it comes to the welfare of the people and the system.

This time though, the media too is playing the the power centre's tunes. Plus this govt has the advantage of technological advances like Aadhaar which they can use to establish dictatorial authority with impunity and no oversight. I was a kid when this case came about. I knew Emergency was a dark blot on Indian democracy...but the extent to which Indira Gandhi was corrupt and a power-luster is staggering. What an abysmal liar and shameless woman she was! No doubt, she believed she had a God-given right to rule the country and would not allow anyone to challenge that perceived right!

"After all he was brought down on petty...." You mean, Indira Gandhi right? If so, I don't think she was brought down on petty misconduct charges - she abused government machinery for her own ends and even modified the rules to suit her. Doesn't get any worse than that! As for Modi, you're right in saying he might do likewise. But, it would still be wrong on principle and ethics, no matter how many people do it.

Sure, any one can see that. But why point that out to me? I did not claim Modi has imposed Emergency!

I sincerely appreciate the people who were the master minds behind helping her out! Though I hate the idea of an emergency and the abuse of power. But these guys had one job, to help Indira Gandhi get aquitted and they guys just took the loop holes in our system for a ride. Just brilliant in my opinion. Can't believe I'm saying this though.

Aditya V. Where did you find that Indira was 'acquitted' ? The 'Stay' in Allahabad H.C was just obtained by 'Luck' as Mr. Shantibhushan was absent & could not oppose it, otherwise, it is grossly 'unusual & incomprehensible' for a Judge to give a 'stay' on his own verdict! Js Krishna Iyer did allow only 'Conditional & partial' stay on Allahabad HC and allowed for hearing of 'further argument'. But Indira did not wait and went for the 'Emergency' and unleashed the series of amendments of acts and the Constitution (39th amendment) itself and that too, with 'retrospective effect' which made the case against her itself irrelevant. Her lawyers did not get any chance to prove her 'Not guilty' because she changed the Law itself! She did not win in the 'Court of Law' and manipulated the 'Law' taking the advantage of the 'Parliament'! Do u find it praiseworthy?

To be honest! I never thought Emergency was placed only to safe Indra Gandhi PM Seat....There should be a mention in history books as showing the both faces on Indra Gandhi..so that today students should be aware about the dark truth about the time period of Emergency

What was the verdict of Nana Palkiwala afterwards? She was the origin of corrupt practices. She paid a price later with her life

Cleary the judges of the supreme court have failed to honour their responsibility and so permitted oppression. The court should have ruled that the parliament does not have the right to make retrospective laws.
